The United States population is growing rapidly. At a rate of 0.7% per year currently, that equates to about 9 million new people a year, after the number of deaths are accounted for. With the number of people seen on the streets rising and the number of incarcerated criminals “dropping” to around 0.2%, it is difficult to see where all these new people are going to fit into society. As hard as it is to imagine a new baby born every eight seconds, that is the reality currently facing America. However, while this type of population growth is likely going to cause America’s demise, another country is currently populating at a rate even America cannot compete with: India. At an astonishing 1.7% increase per year, India is currently populated with almost 900 million more people than the United States. With less than half the land size and an undeniable need for more resources to survive, India has been faced with the largest increase of population within the last century. However, unlike the United States, India’s government has taken crucial steps towards helping to control their population. Albeit, their methods are a bit unorthodox and incredibly appalling by Western standards. Regardless, in order to maintain a …show more content…
Although no set standards have been implemented by the Indian government regarding birth control and “population control,” there is still an overwhelming number of female sterilizations being performed each year. While around 37% of females in India have “chosen” to be permanently sterilized, the vast majority of men have declared that male vasectomies are considered culturally unacceptable. Additionally, the “selected abortion of girls” in addition to the sterilization of women of child bearing age has caused the ratio of women to men, in some communities, to be as small as eight to ten, with the younger generation being more susceptible to a wider
The growth of the American population was a ratio of 1 to 3. So, for every 1 American, there were 3 Englishmen. This gave england a lot of power.
This particular article addresses the issue of female feticide and sex-selection abortions in Canada. Mrozek tends to focus on the Indian culture as it is a rather common practice in Indian custom. Indo-Canadians sometimes choose to abort their babies if they find out they are having a girl. Other times they can be coerced into it by elder relatives
By the time sterilization for both the poor and minorities became an official sanction in 1970, and reservation populations became main targets of this policy, the IHS was ready to initiate its campaign against Indian women. Policy turned into perpetration, and people turned into victims.
The United States of America experienced a nearly one percent population growth rate in 2014 (Lafayette Parish, Louisiana). This growth rate is higher in comparison to Britain, France, and other first world countries. To many, this statement is not surprising. There is always an exaggerated news story about the increasing number of people immigrating to America and how it affects the country. Each woman in America is replacing herself and her spouse by giving birth to an average of nearly two babies in her lifetime (Louisiana). As America grows, more and more people migrate to cities because, generally, living in a city provides an easier life. Cities have plentiful jobs, more housing, and a multitude of places to shop and to eat. Cities also
Around the 1950s, India was the first country to officially establish a family planning program. This program made birth control information to become more readably available. India's government saw big families leading to continued poverty, and poverty hindering economic progress. Just as with China, India saw foresaw that the country would not be able to feed the masses of people, and the country would eventually use up all of its resources and the population would ultimately breed themselves out of existence. Up until the 1970's, the government used no aggressive force to promote the use of contraceptives or sterilisations. They increased medical care and access to hospitals, and provided education for family planning. In the 1970's the government declared India to be in a "state of emergency". Medical workers went out into the slums and poorer regions of India and forcibly sterilised women. The medics were rewarded for how many women they were able to sterilise.
During 1680 to 1750 there was a tremendous population boom in North America. The factors that lead to an increase in population included; higher birthrates, healthier environment, and a reliance on free labor.
India’s statistics are similar. According to the BBC “In 1961, for every 1,000 boys under the age of seven, there were 976 girls. Today, the figure has dropped to a dismal 914 girls. Although the number of women overall is improving (due to factors such as life expectancy), India's ratio of young girls to boys is one of the worst in the world after China. Many factors come into play to explain this: infanticide, abuse and neglect of girl children. But campaigners say the decline is largely due to the increased availability of antenatal sex screening, and they talk of a genocide”.
The growth of a country is closely related to its population growth and can meet the needs of economic development. As a result, immigration can be the best way to save the economy when domestic population growth can not meet economic requirements. Since the 1970s, population growth in developing countries has slowed, leading to slower economic growth. Labor shortages in countries such as the UK, France and Germany have led to a severe recession. However, countries such as Canada have experienced great economic prosperity as new immigrants have been injected into the Canadian economy. It is therefore important for the Government to understand the immense impact of migration on the domestic economic boom. One of the most striking examples is
The population of students in America is only rising. It will be a lot harder for students to be able to get into the classes they want. There are 20.5 million students who are expected to attend a college in America. USF has a total population of over 40,000 students alone. In addition, the world that we live in is moving towards the usage of technology top aid us in the everyday tasks that we perform. We even have CANVAS as an application on our phones to check our upcoming assignments and grades. Our application, Fouzia will be accessible for anyone who is a student attending a state college with access to an email or a phone number. Our targeted demographic will be college students in America. We will work with multiple colleges within
The data collected by ecologists about the statistics of the populations of species is known as its demographics (Belk, Borden-Maier, 2010). Population demographics tell us a great deal about how a population is structured in terms of age, size, and density.
In India, women are being manipulated to stop having children after their second birth. Officials claim that by regulating population and the pregnancies of women after their second child they will be able to empower women by offering them contraceptive choices and child care facilities. In reality, if women do not agree to be sterilized after their second birth they will be
People in India show a strong preference to not spend time raising girls. The sex birth ratio in India is one of the worst having 112 boys for every 100 girls born. Gill and Mitra-Kahn believe the reason for this lack of girls is due to
It is regrettable that female infanticide and foeticide are rapidly decreasing the female population throughout India. The main factors that is responsible for the increase in the incidence of female infanticide and foeticide is the low status of women, son preference, and the practice of dowry across all casts groups.
Human population growth is becoming a huge issue in our world today. The population is increasing rapidly. The reason that it is becoming a concern is because it has affected the economic, environmental, and social aspects of our world. In the film Frontline: Heat, we can see how there might not be a future for our planet unless we are able to reduce the emissions and make our world a safe place. Not only for the present but also for future generations so that they are able to live long and healthy lives.
Contemporary Indian society professes a profound faith in every individual’s “right to life and dignity”. The rights relating to the weaker & vulnerable sections of Indian society especially women, and more specially the girl child were violated. The twin social evils of female foeticide & female infanticide were the main causes.Violence against women exists in various forms, in all societies, the world over. In 1996 the world health assembly endorsed the fact that violence against women is a Public Health problem and female foeticide is one extreme manifestation of violence against women. India is a country of 102.7 crore population, out of which 53.1 crores is of males and 49.6 crores is of females,
