In the 21st century technology has become an essential part of daily living, from circulating large amounts of information to entertainment technology has become important. As technology developed, pop culture simultaneously began leaving an impression on the world. Popular culture creates norms that youth generation after generation attempt to follow, which is having a negative effect on culture. Media outlets such as television are able to influence the way adolescents not only spend their time but behave as well. Rap is a culture influenced by poverty and drugs. In Hip-hop planet James McBride talks to Henry Rosenkranz and he says, “There’s a guy i work with, when Kanye West sings about a gold digger, he can relate because he’s paying alimony and child support.” Mcbride, James. "Hip Hop Planet." N.p., n.d). Rap resonates with minorities because the minorities can relate to what most rap artist rap about: the struggle. Even though poverty as where most rappers begin, by lyricizing it rappers have made such a lifestyle seem standard or regular. By having rappers speak about alimonies and child support, it gives the impression that it’s okay to everyday people. Rap also negatively influences people in today’s generation because everyone wants to emulate the most popular artists. James Mcbride described it best when he stated “Most rap songs unabashedly function as walking advertisements for luxury cars, designer clothes, and liquor.” (Mcbride, James. "Hip Hop Planet." N.p., n.d.). And as long as today’s youth wants to emulate celebrities, they will grow up with those same values.
