Civil disobedience is the refusal to comply with certain laws or to pay taxes and fines, as a peaceful form of political protest. In this essay I will be comparing the Ohio poor People's Campaign to the instances in SELMA. The 40-day poor People's Campaign featured numerous events centered around non-violent activism. Stated in the article ¨Fifty years ago , Martin Luther King Jr. advocated for Americans living in poverty¨. Which was called the ¨Poor People's Campaign¨. The difference between the two is that SELMA was willing to fight for the right to vote and the poor People's Campaign protested to pass a $15 minimum wage, keep SNAP, and Medicaid expansion.
During the Selma March, certain areas in the South made it difficult for blacks to register to vote. African Americans had to suffer taking beatings or getting killed due to discrimination. However, Martin decided to start an epic march from Selma to Montgomery. The Selma to Montgomery march consisted of civil rights protests that occurred in Alabama. The Ohioans suffered from low income. So they decided to come together to protest for a change. It is also one out of thirty campaigns being waged around the country. The activist that was involved in the campaign stated that they were following civil rights leader Martin Luther King´s example. They also mentioned that they will participate in non-violent civil disobedience to end racism. ¨It is not ok to let our children go without. It is okay to let the homeless be the answer.
