The Pontiac Grand Am was originally a midsize model, introduced in the 1970s. Briefly discontinued, Pontiac resurrected the Grand Am name in 1985 as a compact vehicle and continued building this model until 2005. Offered in coupe and sedan configurations, the Grand Am was replaced by the G6.

Pontiac Grand Am 1985 to 2005

The first two generation Grand Ams were built in the 1970s and were rear-wheel drive. Beginning in 1985, the third-generation Grand Am was released and stayed in production through 1991. This now front-wheel drive model offered room for five and was related to the Buick Skylark and Oldsmobile Cutlass Calais.

Standard equipment included 15-inch wheels, anti-lock brakes, power door locks, air conditioning, and a basic audio package. Upgrades included power windows, a power driver’s seat, cruise control, four-wheel disc brakes, larger tires, spoiler, and a sunroof.

In 2000, Pontiac added a five-speed manual gearbox to the options list for models powered by the base engine. Other changes included an improved center console along with new exterior appearance packages. For 2001, the Pontiac Grand Am received a wheel upgrade and additional audio system choices.

Starting in 2002, Pontiac swapped out the base engine with one displacing at 2.2 liters. Smaller and less powerful than the previous engine, the trade-off was improved fuel economy.

In 2003, Pontiac shuffled its equipment packages and trim levels. Satellite radio was made available on all models and the OnStar communications system was made standard, except for the base SE edition.
