Hazardous Pollution Water Pollution has been an increasing problem over the last few years. Pollution comes from many different things; agricultural, urban runoff, industrial, sedimentary, animal wastes, and leeching from landfills/septic systems just to name a few (Resources). The reason why pollution has increased over the years is because the rise in population and the advancements in technology the society has made. If society plans on having their resources here for many years to come they are going to have to make some drastic changes in the way they treat the earth, and these changes will have to start with their pollutants (Foundation). Tar-Pamlico River is one of the many rivers in North Carolina. It runs one hundred eighty …show more content…
Home to 10 million hogs, North Carolina is the number two producer of swine in the United States. Swine produce about ten times the fecal waste of an average human being, resulting in roughly thirteen million pounds of waste per day from the North Carolina herd (Smith & Jernigan). Research has found that hog and poultry feces and urine are leaking out of open-air, unlined cesspools, draining off the waste disposal fields used by the facilities and polluting the Tar River. Samples have shown that fifty-eight percent of watersheds have shown swine or poultry manure effects (Henderson). In addition, the large corporations behind this industry will not be liable for mismanagement of animal waste and the harm it causes public health and the environment. The corporations may own the hogs and the feed, but they do not take ownership of the waste. “The waste, and its liability, becomes the problem of the contract growers and the state of North Carolina. Until the corporations are held accountable for externalizing the true cost of their business to the public, hog lagoons and spray fields will continue to plague eastern North Carolina for a very long time” (Foundation). Polluted storm water runoff, including sediment from poorly maintained construction sites, is the number one reason for poor water quality in North Carolina. Sediment can cause severe problems for creeks, rivers and estuaries on which we
Water pollution has become a huge factor in the crisis of earth contamination. It is defined as the addition of harmful chemicals to natural water. Sources of water pollution include industrial waste, marine dumping, global warming, oil pollution,
The Chattahoochee River has become increasingly along the years. The Chattahoochee's pollution problem increases due to the many components such as the construction site sediment that runs off the north Georgia mountains as well as irrigation field runoff from farms. Bacteria, oil, grease, metal, and trash are picked up from the runoff and flow to the Chattahoochee, which has detrimental effects on the ecosystem. Also the sewer system has served a part in the pollution of the Chattahoochee, because the sewer system in Atlanta isn’t at the level where it can accommodate the growing population and its water
The Neuse River has played a vital role throughout much of the history of North Carolina. In recent decades however the river has seen degradation of its health and ecology via massive amounts of point and non-point source pollution. The result has been numerous events of eutrophication, resulting in the ecological “dead zones” found throughout the river. Notable contributors of this pollution have been industrial plants and agriculture, most notably power plants and hog farms. As a result, federal and state agencies have enacted strict regulations and water quality standards and procedures to monitor the tributaries, estuarine areas, and main stem of the greater Neuse River watershed.
In recent years, pork production has become a big business in the United States. In the past, the raising of swine was handled by small farming operations. Today, however, pigs are raised in large factories, some of which have the capacity to hold more than 100,000 animals (Lynch 14). This has created problems in terms of handling large amounts of excremental waste. These problems recently became evident in the state of North Carolina. A few years ago, North Carolina became the primary location for large-scale hog-raising operations. In particular, large companies like Coharie Hog Farm and Murphy Family Farms began locating along the eastern side of Interstate 95. This area was found to be suitable for hog farming because it is a coastal plain "where the land is flat, the rivers wide and human habitation scattered" ("The Brown Lagoon" 24). The state of North Carolina was also favorable for large-scale swine operations because there was a lack of laws regulating that type of business. In order to ensure their ability to operate without being heavily regulated, the major swine companies in North Carolina donated huge amounts of money to the leading politicians in the state. Thus, the major swine farmers were able to gain a sense of immunity as a result of their powerful political connections. At the same time, the state's leading politicians tended to encourage such operations because they were providing employment and thus improving the overall economic welfare of
Hog farms are plentiful in North Carolina, but the 40 million gallons of untreated hog waste created everyday creates more than just a foul smell. Hog waste creates huge environmental, health, and economic issues, such as excessive nitrates in groundwater, the disruption of the thyroid, and the decrease of land value. Due to the number of hogs and how inefficiently the waste is being disposed of, this is becoming an increasing problem in North Carolina. The threat to the environment, our health, and the economy could be significantly reduced by using cleaner and more efficient ways to dispose of the waste, such as anaerobic digesters.
Water pollution is when, “one or more substances have built up in the water to such an extent that they cause problems for animals and people” (Woodford). Water pollution is also bad for humans and animal’s health. Sewage, chemicals, radioactive waste, oil pollution, and plastic, are some causes for water pollution (Explain That Stuff). When water from rain runs off roofs and roads into rivers it carries away trash, toxic chemicals, dirt, and harmful organisms (NRDC Water). Some solutions to these are to throw things into the correct bin, use water wisely, and not throw chemicals, oil, paints, and medicine down the sink, drain, or toilet. Also plant lots of trees and have cities develop a sewage treatment plant to minimize pollution (eSchool Today). It’s important to protect our
When you think of problems in the world today, water pollution isn’t one that would normally come up. In fact it is one of the worst problems in the world today. Water pollution, by definition, is the contamination of streams, lakes, underground water, bays, or oceans by any substances harmful to living things. All living things contain water and most need water to survive, so water pollution is a big problem. If severe, the pollution can kill off birds, fish, and any animals that use the water source. In some cases even killing an entire species.
A controversy issue in the United States is whether or not we should be involved in the controlling international pollution. Pollution is problem world-wide. Many would like to be involved in pollution while others would not. I believe that the United States should not be involved in the controlling of international pollution.
One of the reasons that cause air pollution in the United States is combustion of fossil fuels. United states known as the developed countries. For big countries, there will have many moving vehicles. Burning oil from fossil fuels such as diesel is burnt in moving vehicles cause air pollution. When the oil is burned, dangerous gases released into air and the environment. From that, if the people overuse of fossil fuel, its will kill the environment as dangerous gases are polluting the environment and harm the habitat. Because of our selfishness, other must face hardship cause of air pollution that is produced from the environment also from the human. From the source that was found, according to Rakesh from Conserve Energy Future (CEF), dangerous
What are the problems with America currently today? One problem we have faced in America is environmental pollutions. Environmental pollutions are the harmful filth in the air, we breathe everyday. Perhaps we do not notice them as we breathe. Some filth is seen from a far distance. Factory filth is the main pollution producer in the USA now.
Since human’s activity, pollution becomes a big problem in the world. There are a lot of part of pollutions include water pollution, light pollution and air pollution. Air pollution is happened in our life. The United States is also a victim of air pollution. In 1943, Los Angeles photochemical smog event occurred. The whole of Los Angeles was covered with smoke. There are about 400 people died and a lot of fruits in orchards began to wither.
A reason that water pollution is a problem today is because many people don’t realize that they are hurting out water supplies when they really are. There are many pollutants that hurt our water supply such as farming. When farmers spray their fields with chemicals and apply fertilizers. Some of these chemicals reach the river, and animal urine and manure may be washed into the river. Another cause of water pollution is from accidents, such as tanker spills. Accidents with chemicals may cause river pollution as well. Mining can be another cause because the dusts and minerals get washed into the rivers. Seepage is another cause of water pollution. Because chemicals from waste dumps join the groundwater flow into the river. Urban Wastes is a major cause because the sewage comes from toilets, sinks, and industrial processes. This causes many human diseases such as diarrhea, dysentery, hepatitis, and cholera.
Water is one of our most important sources of life on earth, without water there would be no such thing as life. However, it seems that humans have not realized how important water is to the survival of all living things. Water pollution is one of the world 's worst forms of pollution. For example, take a look at a glass of water. “It may appear clear, but there are really millions of microscopic pollutants floating in it” (water Pollution). Approximately over half of the earth 's surface are covered by water; water is a very dynamic system, any change to its normal content could affect local, regional, and eventually worldwide drinking water. “Water pollution is the contamination of lakes, streams, bays, underground well water, or oceans by substances harmful to living things” (Smith). If the water pollution continues to grow the humans, plants, and animals that all require water will start dying, because the pollution in the water will get so bad that it will be unsafe to drink.
I think that the topic pollution is a very important topic to talk about, here is why I think so.
These types of sources we us in our everyday lives like cars, trucks, and buses, and many that we use but don’t realize like when we us electricity made from a power plant.
