qualified to wait until I have obtained my certificate and have the tool of higher education under my belt. The specifics of what exactly I hope to accomplish by jumping as far as I possibly can in my professional life are to simply be the best social worker for addicts and their families that I can possibly be. The issues plaguing these people and their families are catastrophic, and I understand firsthand how damaging and divisive the effects can be. If I can help even one family understand and shape their family environment into a safer and more constructive one and to give back to even just a single individual who needs the kind of guidance and support that I needed (and thankfully received), then my life will be more than well-lived. However,
Social work agencies strive to provide access to services that promote well-being for those most in need in society. Different agencies may vary in regard to their specific purposes, missions, or foundations. Two agencies that provide assistance in diverse ways to individuals in need are the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services and The Mayhill Hospital. The following discussion will explore comparisons and contrasts between these agencies with regard to their focuses, interventions, and roles.
The matter the social worker demonstrated social work practice was by presenting and the stories of these individuals that otherwise would have not been heard. The social worker provided the individuals with safe place and opportunity to tell their narratives. Moreover, the social worker showed by show casing the public policies that some states and perspectives have on this given group. it was done by informing the audience on the policies that discriminated against the
The profession I am going to base this essay on is Social Work. The standards that this line of work follows are set by the Health and Care Professional Council (HCPC). Social workers have to follow these standards so they can provide the best possible care and enable the HCPC to see where improvements are needed to prevent serious issues from arising. Social workers have to follow a number of different acts as part of their job, these are learnt when they complete the initial training. It is compulsory for social workers to complete a certain amount of hours of training each year; this is to ensure they are kept up to date on all the standards and changed in procedures and also to make sure they can provide the best possible care to the
PER REPORTER: Kathy said one of her students by the name of (Shadavious) went to visit her father (David Lee) this weekend when she was told some disturbing information. According to Shandavious, there are four children living in the home with David Lee and one of them by the name of Staciera told her that David Lee makes her do things they should not be doing. Shandavious said Staciera told her David Lee threatened to taker her phone and tell her mother on her if she did not do what he told her to do. She also told her that at night David Lee comes and gets in the bed with her and makes her do unknown things to him. Shandavious said one of the other children (Kishona) living in the home told her that she sleeps on the top bump bed above Staciera,
State the significance to social work practice and social policy: Food insecurity and malnutrition is an endless pressing issue on the macro level of social work across the nation. This is a significance part of a social workers job is to address these issues on a larger scale. Social workers incorporate multisector strategies to address this issue through different agencies hoping to develop evaluations that would produce results of the need base for nutritional and food security programs, which leads to funding for these programs as well. The social polices of this includes providing food pantries, food banks, healthier options in school systems, and nutritional programs that helps reduce hunger and to address the poor heath concerns associated
Setting a boundary is an important core value in the field of social work. According to the Social Work Code of Ethics, “social workers should provide and represent themselves as competent only within the boundaries of their education, training, license, certification, consultation received, supervised experience, or other relevant professional experience” (Code of Ethics of the NASW). Professional helpers are generally compassionate people, but they also need to recognize the value of setting limits. This was the case when I worked as an adjunct instructor, which included providing individual tutoring. Sara Towns (name changed), a student and distant cousin, evoked the possible clouding of boundaries. For new social workers, this kind of reflection may be helpful as they define their roles. Through a series of professional and personal experiences with Sara, I learned that boundaries must be maintained to foster a positive relationship and prevent potential conflicts.
In the support group, there were a wide variety of members present during all four sessions. They all came with their diverse characteristics and experiences. The only element of homogeneity in our group was all social work students at Loyola University Chicago. Elements of heterogeneity included gender, as there was only one male in the group. Race was also an element of heterogeneity, since there was a mix of members Caucasian and African-American ethnicities in our group. In terms of educational level, Amy was a master’s level student, and the rest of us were still in our undergraduate careers. It appeared motivation also varied, since several members of the group openly wanted support, while others took a step back and were quieter. I
Many people are driven to pursue a career in social work due to personal experiences that have led them to a desire to help others. Ben Carniol, author of Case Critical: Social Services and Social Justice in Canada, is no exception to this. He brings years of experience to a new perspective on where social work is headed for this country. He discusses why anti-oppressive and progressive social work practice is effective, and vital for future success, what systemic and societal barriers stand in the way of said practice, and what steps can and are being taken to overcome these obstacles. Carniol’s book brings readers on the journey that many social workers take throughout their careers, and is inspiring to those headed into this career
locate my work within the broad areas of social theory, political economy, and labor and social movements. In my research and writing, I investigate, largely in the U.S. context, overdeterminations of race, gender, class, and power. The geographical impulses shaping my analyses are deliberately counterintuitive. What I wish to do is disarticulate commonsense couplings of sites and struggles and disrupt assumptions such as the idea that politics happens in the milieu of the state, or that value comes from wage-controlled workplaces.
I would ask questions about the social part of the job. I wouldn’t say that socializing is a strength of mine, but i still do better than most people. The reason is because when working in groups, I tend to have trouble unless I’m the leader. I'm not a control freak or anything. If anything, people usually say I’m a good leader. Most of the time, when I depend on other people, things never go my way. So now, when I work in a group, most of the time I'm either alone or I put together my own group. I would ask what kinds of skills are needed while I'm working at that location.
Many problems remain in the American society such as the increasing number of people living in poverty, the juvenile crime rate, unaffordable housing for the working middle-class and poor people, backlash against illegal immigration, and the shortfall in social welfare programs (black). Social workers try to combat these problems, which are a result of society, economics, and development problems. Social work in the United States is a profession about promoting and offering social services through practicing with people, communities, and organizations; advocating with and for clients; and creating social work knowledge (Writing in social work). Social work in the United States utilized the direct practice with individuals, families, and communities. Social workers need to continue to advocate for social problems (Writing in social work).
The literature review a continuation explores the relationship between religiosity and its effectiveness in the social work practice, what entitles effective social work practice, and the effects of religiosity on professional practices.
Every worthwhile journey begins with one step. My social work journey began when I received my undergraduate degree from the University of Utah in 2003. I thought my next step would be to immediately pursue a graduate degree. In my undergraduate career I had taken numerous classes from the College of Social and Behavioral Science and had done well in those classes. In my Social Work as a Profession course I had an assignment to shadow a social worker and write a paper about my experience. I chose to shadow my father-in-law, a social worker with over 30 years of experience, and in my paper I expressed my desire to go into the social work field. I knew I liked helping people. I knew I liked problem solving and critical thinking. I thought my 22 year-old self was ready to embark on that journey, but I wasn’t. I realize now that what I lacked at graduation was one crucial step… perspective. Over the past twelve years I have gained that much needed perspective and have taken many steps forward in my journey, and with those steps and that increased perspective, I now feel more fully prepared to begin my social work career.
I personally view social work as a structured, multi-faceted platform that provides necessary, practical assistance and aid to those who direly need it. This comes in numerous different forms and reaches across all walks of life, but ultimately, the unequivocal similarity that all social workers in any branch of social work share is the ability to plant and foster seeds of positivity and growth in even the darkest, bleakest of places. I have experienced the transformative power of this very work firsthand and, frankly, I believe social work to be one of the most admirable and necessary professions to exist. As the late journalist Alexander Chase so aptly put it, “Social work is a Band-Aid on the festering wounds of society.” It is the role of social workers to clean up, to the best of their ability, the mess that is left behind in the lives of so many people because of social, economic, familial, or systemic shortcomings. While it is impossible for social workers to wholly rewire the system or entirely eliminate pervasive social problems, they are the ones who are on-site after the damage has been done, toolkit in hand, first-aid kit in hand, prepared to dirty their hands, ready to work their magic. And I am interested in becoming one of those workers and doing just that for families of addicts, trying my absolute best to enable others to flourish into the person they are meant to be, which they would not otherwise have had the luxury of accomplishing. I am interested in
One important thing that I learned about this competency is the importance of knowing the history of social work; in addition, the impact that social work has had in enacting social welfare policies. For example, we learned about Mary Richmond and Jane Addams and the great influence they have in social work practice. Mary Richmond helped coined case work in social work, and Jane Addams is the “mother” of social work because she was one of the earliest people to influence social work practice. We also learned about how the Civil Rights Movement helped with the advancement of not only people of color, but it also helped women and other oppressed groups of people in our society. It is important to understand the history of social work because history has helped create many laws and policies to help people that are oppressed in our society. In addition, I learned the importance of advocating for policies that advance human rights and social, economic, and environmental justice. I can use this knowledge in my practice by working for an agency that advocates for the social, economic, and environmental justices.
