Heterogeneity In Social Work

This question is much more complex than it seems on the surface, due in part to the multiple variables that would influence the answer. For instance, if I was in dire need of a job I may go out of my way to impress the person, especially if it is my dream job. Another aspect might be how invasive the question is perceived to be, which could influence my reply, especially if coupled with the first example of really needing a job. There may also be ethical factors to the question, some of which are “grey” areas, while others are very clear. Although all of these (and likely many others I haven’t thought of) may play a part in how I feel and exactly how I react to an invasive question, I think in the end I would default back to job relatedness.

Social workers in the healthcare field can be very beneficial to an interdisciplinary team. Throughout the semester we have looked at how social workers bring their professional and distinct skill set and beliefs to these teams. There are many stereotypes and biases surrounding social workers and other professionals on interdisciplinary teams. Social workers also have different views than other healthcare professionals and use their skills in communication to help the clients they serve, along with various other skills that are unique to social workers differing from other professional in the healthcare field. Social work agencies strive to provide access to services that promote well-being for those most in need in society. Different agencies may vary in regard to their specific purposes, missions, or foundations. Two agencies that provide assistance in diverse ways to individuals in need are the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services and The Mayhill Hospital. The following discussion will explore comparisons and contrasts between these agencies with regard to their focuses, interventions, and roles.

In the generalist social work practice, a social worker is a change agent due to the expansive and complex umbrella of social and human services and roles. A change agent works to promote positive changes for the well-being of an individual, family, group, organization or community. In order to fulfill the tasks of a social worker, one should be trained and equipped with a wide variety of skills: such as setting appropriate boundaries, possessing and utilizing self-awareness and the ability to counsel or advocate for clients. In addition to many skills, the generalist social work practice includes a surplus of methods to either prevent or intervene when necessary. A method often utilized by social workers is the person-in-environment conceptualization. The person-in-environment perspective considers factors, such as familial or economic, beyond the individual to better understand the client’s behaviors or situation. Another method is the strengths perspective. The strength-based perspective focuses on the client’s or client system’s positive qualities to build upon those capabilities. And the recognition of strengths helps to achieve goals in a more client-led approach. Generalist practitioners are professionals with a wide range of knowledge and a repertoire of diverse skills in order to enhance the social functioning of all within society.

In the United States and many other countries throughout the world, societal structures have been created to place some in a position of power and others into oppressed positions. These systems often remain unchallenged and force the oppressed into silence for fear of becoming outcasts. These systems affect everyone and can even go as far as making the oppressed internally believe that they are supposed to stay in their second class state. One of these many systems is heterosexism. This paper will cover what heterosexism is, the effects of heterosexism, how heterosexism relates to other forms of oppression, and what can be done to stop heterosexism from being perpetuated.

At our first support group we decided that our goals would stay the same each week. Our primary goal was to practice group facilitation and group participation. Our sub goals were to support one another and get to know one another. We began our first support group with not really supporting one another because there was no need for it; however, the second support group we supported one another as we shared about our families. The third support group also got deeper in supporting one another as we talked about our high school experiences. The fourth group I felt that we did not exercise the sub goal to support one another because it was more educational than supportive.

Social development must build human capacities and afford opportunities to enable citizens, regardless of their background and social identity, to fulfil their potentials and enable full participation.

This perspective can relate to the generalist social work practice because the client’s environment and what is happening around them will always affect them. For example, if you are working with someone with a drug addiction, their environment of being around other drugs and drug addicts, can continue them down this path. Therefore, to resolve the issue, you must work with them and the environment they are in to help them. The community that anyone lives in is the community they are comfortable with. This perspective with help the social worker also gain knowledge over different types of communities and societies, as well as help their clients.

Social work is a profession that embodies the values and ethics of social change, social justice, advocacy, empowerment, liberation and the enhancement of peoples’ well-being. When working with young people, it is a field of practice that involves utilising those values to support a degree of complex and diverse issues. This essay will discuss what strategies and methods can be used to make a difference with young people in social work, especially culturally appropriate methods with Indigenous Australians that can be transferred to every day social work practice. Then, it will involve an overview to the current status of my personal practice framework and professional values whilst discussing strategies for improvement.

Within my belief, the Social Work practice courses shaped my understandings of generalist social work practice. These course stressed on the engagement, assessment, intervention, and evaluation process involving social worker’s working relationships with individuals, during class, professor Hellen that to best support clients in taboo areas, social workers must eliminate their personal bias and ask open-ended question and listen respectfully when collecting information from clients during the engagement, assessments, and evaluation phase of the helping relationship. It is important to be involved in macro practice in order to be competent agency leaders, social change advocates, and world changers. Social workers who engage in macro practice increase their knowledge and skills of the profession by learning more about the systems they work in. They build their strengths in this area, therefore, making them competitive and marketable to higher level opportunities within agencies, organizations, and communities.

Many problems remain in the American society such as the increasing number of people living in poverty, the juvenile crime rate, unaffordable housing for the working middle-class and poor people, backlash against illegal immigration, and the shortfall in social welfare programs (black). Social workers try to combat these problems, which are a result of society, economics, and development problems. Social work in the United States is a profession about promoting and offering social services through practicing with people, communities, and organizations; advocating with and for clients; and creating social work knowledge (Writing in social work). Social work in the United States utilized the direct practice with individuals, families, and communities. Social workers need to continue to advocate for social problems (Writing in social work).

I can see myself working in a structure of lawful territory, working 100 percent in the lawful range does not by any stretch of the imagination mirror my internal inspiration. I am torn between two vocations, to be a social worker, helping people in their life. In addition, I get a kick out of the chance to end up a bookkeeper would be a decent decision for me. I appreciate working with numbers. I moreover like to associate with individuals, a drive which is vital and crucial when working with clients and partners.
