1) How prevalent is plagiarism on college campuses?
Plagiarism is an increasing large issue on college campuses, a habit to most of the student. According to the article ‘’The Plagiarism Plague’’, the findings on the survey made to 50,000 students on more than 60 campuses was that 70 percent of the students admitted that they cheated. Half of the students surveyed admitted that one or more times made serious cheating on writing assignments, with 77 percent of the students surveyed said that cheating was not a serious issue.

The web has made it easier for students to plagiarize. There are many websites designed specifically for cheating where one can buy papers and some have pre-written papers

Students are trying to find the fastest and easiest way to get the assignment completed. Many students will plagiarize intentionally or unintentionally at some point of their educational career. The writer, Todd Pettigrew wrote the article “All your profs wrong about plagiarism,” explains that plagiarism takes the form of counterfeiting, which means to fake instead of stealing. Many college students result to piracy rather than to add in the work because they are lazy or desperate to succeed and rarely pay attention to the causes of cheating. Students who view plagiarism as counterfeiting may see nothing wrong with the crime because they fake their work instead of stealing another person’s own words. The scholar knows the system of cheating, acknowledges the consequences, and understands the crime; however, continues the offense because they want to pass the class. plagiarism is the biggest problem education of college or university. The concept of plagiarism is when someone copy of other’s idea, writing, artistic work or creations. According to Emma Teitel’s (2011) article, “all colleges have a definition of plagiarism”, more than 1,000 students were being accused of plagiarism. Every college and university might have their own policies of plagiarism. Both of them has to explain how students should avoid plagiarism and what the consequences of each offence are. Both Seneca and Centennial colleges have similarities and differences regarding definition, penalties and process. However, Seneca’s policy is easier to understand because it is more clear than Centennial’s policy.
Plagiarism occurs in many forms. Self-plagiarism and inadvertent plagiarism are two forms of plagiarism. Students plagiarize for many reasons. Self-plagiarism is a form of plagiarism that is difficult to detect and often over looked. Inadvertent plagiarism is often caused by sloppy work and poor citation preparation skills. Proper education and practicing citations along with the use of online tools will assist the student in preparing citations.
I have really enjoyed this class. Even though a lot of the work we did wasn't that new to me. I really enjoyed using the citation assignments. I believe it is really important to be able to cite your sources right and often. Just to be on the safe side. Plagiarism is one of those seven deadly college sins that you cant take back. What I found challenging was the mind mapping or webbing. It sounds so simple to do, but some how I still have trouble doing it. Well I have trouble with it when its part of an assignment. If its just idea farming then I'm not sure if its an issue. But I didn't do very well on that assignment. One thing that I will have to remember is to not always use the first thing I find when I run a search on the internet.
Academic cheating is nothing new in the world as we know it today. It is a problem that affects all colleges and high schools nationwide. It is something that almost seems to be expected by students and for that reason there has been the creation of many new plagiarism websites. Plagiarism websites make it a greater challenge for students to be able to cheat but, it also creates a mistrust between the student and teacher. The solution to fixing this problem is to figure out the causes as to why students are moving towards cheating in the first place.
Not only does it compare with sources from the internet, but also compares any history of past essays written by students, and or past students, that may exist within the computers system. However, it is believed that one out of three high school students plagiarize an assessment with the help of the internet (Facts and Stats). It is almost impossible for teachers to interrogate and punish all of these students simply because they have greater responsibilities. Therefore, as generations pass through high schools, school administration and teachers will develop strategies to implement within their course to help prevent the crime of plagiarism. An article published in 2011, concludes the idea that plagiarism is on the rise, and they it must be fought. Some technique enlisted within the article include choosing more abstract prompts and having more assignments completed within class time (Bailey). By implementing a creative prompt, the educational system will become more concrete as students will have a harder time finding an essay to copy relating to such a subject. Instructors main goal is to teach their students to their best ability. When the student in turn uses someone else's ideas instead of allowing the lessons they have been taught to create their own, everyone in the situation loses. The teacher is unable to evaluate the student's understanding and the student is unable to truly grasp the concept of the lesson.
Every college student aspires to be successful. The long nights of studying pays off in the end and having the gratification of knowing that it was all accomplished with hard work is blissful. This very realization can only apply to but a few. Many college students opt out of the long nights of studying and choose to go the easiest route possible. However, many students inof higher education do not see it as such a big problem and most of the time do not realize they are plagiarizing. Plagiarism, in most universities can lead to serious consequences including expulsion from the institution. Activities of plagiarism are indeed happening in the academic scenario whether it is done consciously or not. It also can occur either intentional or not. (Eng, 1995), university students in particular and academia in general sometimes do not realize that what they do can be considered as plagiarism. Statistic shows that the percentages of plagiarism among students are increasing each year. According to The Centre for Academic Integrity Studies, almost 80% of the universities students are admit to plagiarize at least once and 36% of the undergraduates have admitted to committed plagiarism in preparing their assignment.
In the Academic world today, the rising incidences of plagiarism are putting more schools and universities on high alert, and zeroing in on how to detect and prevent it. Academic institution’s often have a Student Code of Academic Integrity. Students, whom are caught cheating, can be given warnings, bad grades or even expelled out of school. Today, information is flowing freely and with ease through the Internet. Having this option would make students think more about cheating. According to a survey conducted in 2000, about 96.1% of all respondents are aware of the Internet and within those 59.3% have access the Internet (Business Insights/NOP survey, 2000).

Plagiarism is the uses of someone else work and authored it as one’s own work. In a school environment, it is basically the use of someone else research or publication either a book or even an article on a review without mentioning him or her as if it was the student’s own ideas or work. Per Roig and DeTommaso, 1991, stated in their research that Plagiarism is an act of academic dishonesty and cheating. They also stated that there are many factors that lead to these dishonesties. It is one of the primary problems in academic life and it is a simple subject to draw, but badly to keep off. Plagiarism has become one of the major issues among university students around the world. It is one type of academic misconduct which, is treated seriously in today's universities. Plagiarism is something that is not valued, ignores, or excused in any part of the education process. Either is it supported in whatever type of assignment. Plagiarizing does not only steal someone else’s work; it also robs students from the learning experience that they can earn on the assignment. It promotes laziness and shortcut that can be bad for the school environment. Plagiarism can affect a school badly because it will give the school bad names and downgrade it prestige.
