History
During our initial meeting with Heather Salazar, our team learned that Pink Ribbon Girls started 16 years ago in Cincinnati by a woman named Tracie Metzger. After Tracie was diagnosed with Stage 1 breast cancer, she wanted to start a group

Motivated, Heather paired with Tracie and moved PRG’s headquarters to the Dayton area. Since then, PRG has provided women in the Dayton, Cincinnati and Columbus areas of all ages and all stages of breast cancer with transportation, meal, and house cleaning services.
Mission, Vision, and Values
The PRG Slogan, “no one travels this road alone”, embodies the organization’s purpose. According to the organization’s website, by offering free direct services, education, and support, the PRG family eases emotions of fear and uncertainty felt in women with reproductive cancers and their families. PRG is inspired by those that have fought the battle and motivated by those who reach out to them for help. PRG values their donors, and understands the importance of providing information on how their contributions benefit individuals and families fighting breast cancer.

In the past year, PRG received an average of $55,000, therefore we plan to match this amount in our current proposal. Since PRG has recently developed their mission to provide direct services to a new target group (women with reproductive cancers other than breast cancer), the need for services is exponentially high. We believe this goal is feasible, considering that Pink Ribbon Girls has had a 95% success rate with grants.
Beneficiaries
Women from the “Simply Fight” and “No Age No Stage” programs at UC health who are battling gynecological cancer will benefit from this project. According to previous PRG grant proposals, $15,000 will serve 75-85 based on a family of four. The “Simply Fight” recipients receive three meals per week for their entire family for two months, in addition to other services such as four house cleanings and twenty rides to treatment. The “No Age No Stage” recipients receive a $3,000 stipend. These recipients will put the stipend towards the services they feel are the most important.
Every year in October, Post 9528 focuses on breast cancer awareness. This project is spear-headed by Kathy Crosswhite, an auxiliary member who has survived breast cancer twice. They spend the month of October educating women on the signs and symptoms of breast cancer and on preventative care. They sell ribbons, auction off baskets, and this year are planning a dinner and ball. All proceeds are set aside in an account to help locals in their treatment and
Hello everyone! my friend Gabby Aranda along with a small group of us have created a gofundme to raise money to start up a non-profit organization to help women who are in need of health care. After creating the non-profit, which will be called For All Women, we are focusing on raising money for a clinic in Madison called Share the Health which is open about once per month and is a free women's clinic where physicians and residents volunteer their time to treat underprivileged women. Our overall goal is to allow the clinic to be open more often and therefore help more people in need. Click the link to read more about our plans and consider donating! Thanks so much!
St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is the number one worldwide organization for children's cancer and other serious childhood diseases. “St. Jude has helped improve the survival rate of childhood cancer from 20 to 80 percent”(Young). With your help the families of the children with illnesses pay absolutely nothing throughout their time and stay at St. Jude, making their child's condition and health their only and number one priority (About St. Jude’s Research Hospital). The amount of money that is donated to this hospital benefits not only the patients there, but convalescent’s all around the globe. St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is an organization in which you should donate your money because all of the money goes into paying for the patients’ care and stay, the breakthroughs that they make are shared so doctors everywhere can help more children, and they have improved the survival rate of children’s cancer.
Cancer runs through my family like crazy, and it’s a tough situation to deal with as a patient and for the family of the patient. Brighten A Kid’s Day 5k/Bike Ride raises money for the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital’s Child Life Program where the
It is estimated that 39,511 women and 410 men will die of breast cancer this year alone. There will be 229,160 new cases of breast cancer in men and women this year. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death for women. My great grandmother who I look up to and is the strongest person I know, is a two time Breast cancer survivor and she believes that the organization Susan G Komen has made a huge impact on breast cancer in women. In this speech I want to pay tribute to and recognize all the wonderful things Susan G Komen has done in the research and cure for breast cancer. I will start off by talking about how the organization was founded. Next I will discuss all the great things Susan G Komen has done in the fight against breast
I would like to introduced Susan G Komen and Nancy Bricker. These two girls are sisters and they are also best friends. Susan got diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 33 and lost her battle at the age of 36. Before Susan had passed Nancy had made a promise to Susan that she would end the terrible fight of breast cancer. Nancy her sister said this, “Her journey began with a simple promise to her dying sister, Susan G Komen that would do everything possible to end the shame, pain, fear, and hopelessness caused by this disease.” (Brinker, 2016) Nancy tried her hardest and during that trying period she created a foundation which is called the Susan G Komen Breast cancer foundation. Which was created in memory of her loving sister. Later
Each year, students orchestrate THON, a Penn State student-led philanthropic organization that raises money for Four Diamonds and Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital. Throughout the year, students coordinate fundraisers and a 46-hour dance marathon to cover costs that insurance companies will not cover and attain funding for pediatric cancer research. At Penn State, I intend to be a part of this phenomenal organization. Within THON, I plan to continue my leadership through becoming a committee member. Fundraising is an essential component in any kind philanthropic organization; therefore, participating in canning weekends, becoming a committee member, and raising money. All of the money raised through THON benefits Four Diamonds at Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital for groundbreaking research in pediatric oncology and medical support for families battling this devastating disease. Over the past 40 years, THON has raised over $127 million dollars to find a cure for pediatric cancer, the leading cause of fatal disease in children, which will impact the lives of those dealing with the effects of cancer and improve the overall quality of life for the
Purpose: To inform my audience that there are kids out there that need our help and to have the audience persuade to donating.
Early detection of breast and cervical cancer reduced the burden of disease in women. The practices of Screening shown reduce the level of mortality and improve quality of life. The Every Woman Matters (EWM)stared in 1992 it is a federally-funded program designed to remove barrier to early screening by providing awareness and make screening more financially accessible to woman who have limited or no health insurance. The eligible women receive pay for office visits with associated clinical breast examination, pelvic examination, Papanicolaou smear test, and lab fees (Backer et al., 2004). Age-appropriate mammography and limited number of diagnostic test is also covered under program. In this paper I will
In the spring of 2008, doctors diagnosed my then two year old sister with acute lymphocytic leukemia, heralding a new life of chemotherapy, mustard gas treatments, and innumerable surgeries. As a nine year old at the time, the ordeal stimulated my curiosity about cancer; a curiosity that evolved into a fascination with the biology behind the human body and the chemistry involved in the process. My sister achieved remission and in doing so, cemented my passion to become a pediatric oncologist. Accomplishing this involves attaining my bachelor's degree, graduating from medical school, and completing the residencies required for pediatric and oncology practices; all of which are increasingly expensive. This scholarship is necessary to counter
The Guerilla Girls are a women’s activist art group. They are masked women who came together to make change in the world of art and women’s involvement in society. GG emerged in 1985 and still are active today in New York after 30 years of the emergence of the group. The Guerilla Girls used posters with real statistics to show awareness of sexism in the art world and the discrimination of women in politics as well as in the mass media. The Guerrilla Girls spread awareness of sexism in art, discrimination in politics and the mass media through their workshops, performances, and posters.
Have you ever thought about getting out and exercising but not actually been motivated enough to actually do that same thing? There are much greater benefits to participating in activities and exercise than in sitting on your bum. Everyone knows that the more exercise and activities a person does the healthier they will be. In order for this to be true though a person must continue this throughout his/her life and be committed to doing it more than just once in a blue moon. One easy way to get this exercise is to play a lifetime sport. Lifetime sports include sports that can continue with you for a lifetime, which you can participate in at any age, and don’t have an age season. In this essay I
Raising awareness is a step in the right direction to escalating advocacy and support for childhood cancer research (acco.org 1). One nationwide project that brings in the most financial aid for visitors and patients is St. Jude’s Children's Research Hospital (StJude.org 1). The mission of St. Jude is "to advance cures and the means of prevention, for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment" (StJude.org 1). That being said, the support "helps ensure that St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital will continue its lifesaving mission of finding cures and saving children” (StJudes.org 1). Few people realize the dire situation patients and families are in when they are deciding to not
The War on Drugs is a deep-rooted controversial campaign of prohibition and military aid that has been disputed for many years. There are constant debates as to whether there will ever be a viable solution to the problem. However, as we continue to pursue the “war on drugs,” it has become increasingly evident that “winning” the war seems to be an impossible task. Drug prohibition and the undertaking of the war on drugs have stirred much controversy over its moral and logical implications. While there are many drugs that exist that are unhealthy when abused, it has become apparent that the drug policies in the United States, as well as many parts of the world, are inconsistent and oppressive. Ironically, drug laws were initially created for the good of society, but it has become increasingly clear that drug laws and our undertaking of the drug war have only served to cause problems. The current war on drugs has led to devastating effects on society both economically and socially. Violence and corruption have subjugated throughout the United States, Mexico and many other parts of the world. Additionally, drug prohibition efforts have had very little impact on the supply of illegal drugs and have had little to no success in reducing the demand for illegal drugs. The war on drugs, which is fueled by corruption and propaganda, needs to come to an end for the betterment of society.
“Charlotte Hayley, who had battled breast cancer, introduced the concept of a peach coloured breast cancer awareness ribbon. She attached them to cards saying, ‘The National Cancer Institute’s annual budget is 1.8 billion US dollars, and only 5 percent goes to cancer prevention. Help us wake up our legislators and America by wearing this ribbon.’” (Ribbon, n.d.) Charlotte Hayley did not start the pink ribbon movement, but was more of a catalyst to the movement. “The peach colored ribbon of Hayley aroused interest from Alexandra Penney, editor in chief of Self magazine, who was working on Self magazine‘s 1992 National Breast Cancer Awareness Month issue.” (Ribbon, n.d.) But Charlotte was not interested in working alongside Self magazine, and wanted to remain a grassroots movement. Due to legal matters Alexandra Penney had to give up on the peach colored ribbon, but still wanted to use the ribbon in promoting breast cancer awareness. So they did the next best thing, go with pink. “The cosmetics industry got on board in 1991 to promote breast cancer awareness with the help of Evelyn Lauder of Estée Lauder Cosmetics and Alexander Penney, the editor-in-chief of Self magazine. When Evelyn Lauder and Alexander Penney were working on their breast cancer awareness promotion, they liked Charlotte Hayley’s concept of giving ribbons to promote the support of breast cancer awareness. Lauder, Penney, and Hayley worked
