Brighten A Kid's Day 5k/Bike Ride “Last year, UI Children’s Hospital cared for 67,239 patients from every county in Iowa, nearly every state in the United States, and several other countries,” says the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital. Over the past four years of the 5k/Bike Ride being put on, Macy and Carly Gudenkauf have raised over sixteen thousand dollars for the Child Life Program with the help of many others who pay it forward. With that being said, the Brighten A Kid’s Day 5k/Bike Ride is an outstanding way to pay it forward to the individuals and families who are fighting to stay strong and healthy daily. Cancer runs through my family like crazy, and it’s a tough situation to deal with as a patient and for the family of the patient. Brighten A Kid’s Day 5k/Bike Ride raises money for the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital’s Child Life Program where the …show more content…
First, Carly and Macy held a bake sale, but didn’t earn the funds they imagined. The next year, they decided they would take on the task of just a 5k since both of them were a part of the West Delaware Girls Cross Country team. That year was highly successful; they were still missing something that could earn them so much more money though. After a couple years of pondering on what they could do, Carly and Macy decided they wanted to add a bike ride on after the 5k. Both Carly’s and my parents rode Ragbrai, so they knew they could attract more of an audience to help them pay it forward. By adding the bike ride, it allowed people who didn’t enjoy running or walking to do what they love and ride bikes. Ever since the bike ride was included, this day has been remarkable and continues to prosper by
“Don’t give up, don’t ever give up.” The words of the great Jimmy Valvano. Jimmy was a Men’s Basketball Coach at N.C. State University. He is one of the greatest coaches of all time. But he is also the man who delivered the “Never Give Up” speech at the ESPY Awards in 1993. This has inspired so many people. It’s the thought of Cancer that often brings Jimmy into mind. Stuart Scott is also very inspirational when it comes to cancer. A real inspiration is Mrs. Spatz. She has beat cancer 4 times. Over and over again, she has fought and beat cancer. She is now a teacher at Wyndcroft Private School in Pottstown. Although she is my mother, she creates inspiration for many
Kickstart Kids is an amazing program that has impacted my life and others around me in many different ways. Kickstart has helped me become the leader I am today, it has helped my shyness and make new friends, build my confidence and finding a passion that I love to do. I can start by saying how this program has impacted my life. Kickstart has helped me become a better leader because I can help out in classes and teach students everyday. I can also help out at my school and get involved to be the difference in the school. I can make new friends by going out and getting involved in things and meeting new people. I can meet people in this program that share the same love for the sport as I do. The Kickstart Kids program has helped me build my
Redkite holds a range of fun, professional and innovative events to raise funds for the children, young people and families they support. Redkite also offers the community to organize, hold or sponsor a fundraising event whether it’s a music concert or an art show, a team or personal challenge, a head shave and even a kite-making competition. One of the many large and popular events in which is run by a volunteer committee of young people working together to help raise money for Redkite, is the Sydney Color Ball Event. The Sydney Color Ball is like no other charity event, giving young professionals the opportunity to socialize and have a great night at a fun, sophisticated cocktail-style event. This is a no sit-down dinner; it’s a chance to light up the dance floor to live music, be waited on with substantial canapés and unlimited beer/wine, be caught up in a bidding frenzy on the silent auction, win raffles and door prizes and of course have a memorable night out with your friends, all while helping support Redkite. Redkite also offers support to young children with cancer through providing essential support including – education, counselling, career support and emotional support. It offers professional support through funding social workers in hospitals to offer real and practical assistance and counselling for families, when they need it the most. The importance behind this health issue is that major advances in medicine haven’t significantly improved survivor rates nor have medical advances reduced the number of cancer cases per year in children under 18 years of age (Curtin, Minino, Anderson, 2016).“Congressman McCaul is a father of five and knows that every parent’s worst nightmare is their children receiving a life-threatening cancer diagnosis. Growing up, his childhood best friend lost his battle to cancer. It wasn’t fair then and it isn’t fair now. Congressman McCaul founded the Childhood Cancer
In 2015, almost everyone has experienced cancer taking the life of a loved one, or watched a family member or friend struggle with the infamous disease. Throughout the country, there are several memorials and holidays that remember cancer survivors and their journey to fight their sickness.
This experience allows me to donate my time, money, and commitment to impact the lives of patients taken by the effects of cancer. Participating in Relay for Life requires volunteer hours in and out of the event. This experience touched me in several ways; mainly because it showed me how many people struggle and continue to push through with this life-threatening disease. Learning how many people
On September 23, 2017, at Botanical Gardens, I participated in the St. Jude Walk/Run to End Childhood Cancer. This was the third year that I supported my little cousin Jaylin Stukes who died February 4, 2017, of Cancer. Many people showed up to participate in the walk. I could smell the different hydrangeas and carnations along the trail. Since Jaylin death, I find myself walking more than ever. I go walking to the store, I go to the local school and walk around the track, I go to Mount Trashmore and walk the trail. I feel like the sequel to another Forest Gump movie.
My experience with cancer has resulted in my altruistic personality. I often visit the cancer patients in my community. I chat and play cards or bingo with them to take their mind off their distress. I organize many charity events that raise money for local cancer patients. My favorite event that I have created is “A Journey to Life”, where families journey on a decorated
I never will understand this day to the fair and what all happened, I don’t think anyone will. I just know that one animal ruined a month for me. It was the week right before fair, and all I did was walk my cow. It was the first time ever showing a cow, my brother convinced me that it would be a fun learning experience. That didn’t happen at all for me when I walked into that show ring with a 1,100 pound steer. I was up at 4:00 a.m. the morning of the show, and I was ready to go wash my cows and get them ready for the show.
According to the National Cancer Institute, everyday 43 kids are diagnosed with cancer, and in a year over 1,960 of them will die. That’s why the America Make a Wish Foundation grants a wish every 35 minutes to kids with life threatening diseases. They believe that in some cases, giving the kids their one heartfelt wish could be a real game changer. That's why, one way I’m going to pay it forward is sponsoring a wish.

My mother’s side of the family has a history of cancer. My maternal grandmother and great aunt and uncle all died of some form of cancer. My mother, as well as her siblings are at risk for cancer.
The main focus of this article is Richard Nares, a grieving father, who has become a hero in the eyes of many children fighting cancer. Nares has had a huge impact on two-year-old Sisi Johnson who has neuroblastoma. Sisi’s mother does not have a car and struggles to transport her daughter to and from chemotherapy as much as six times a week. Nares, who lost his son, Emilio, to cancer in 2000, has started a program called “Ride With Emilio”. This program provides transportation for low-income families with children battling cancer. The program has hundreds of patients who receive free rides to and from their cancer treatments. Nares met
We all know someone who has been touched by cancer. The National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation encourages everyone to participate in their community’s events and activities. If you aren’t
The world surrounding kids today is much different than years ago. Many children live more hectic lives than their parents, and even pull it off just as well. Most are surrounded by technology, and use it to answer their questions, whether they be about school, personal issues, their health, their friendships, or anything else that might be concerning them at that particular point in time. Children have the chance to stay inside and play, or they have the chance to go outside to enjoy themselves. Sadly, some barely ever leave their rooms unless they absolutely have to. People in modern society care less about the clothes you wear as a child too. Clothes are more comfortable and can be worn in a relaxed fashion, rather than being hot, heavy,
