Philosophy of Education Essays

I support Gene Carter’s purpose of education, who took from Dewey that “…school is to transfer knowledge and prepare young people to participate in America’s democratic society.” This country works best when everyone is contributing to society. Education is needed to provide the necessary skills to effectively help others in the work force, in the home, and in daily interactions. Schooling also helps people to build relationships with others that will be important throughout life. School is our first experience with other people our age and it forces us to connect with them.

Society has taught us all that in order for us to succeed in life or to someday amount to anything we must have an education first. This world is operated by so many educated and smart people but would they agree that school is the reason as to why they’ve become so successful? Throughout the years we acquire how to peruse, calculate and write but these are not the only essentials in life. As John Taylor Gatto once said, “Once you understand the logic behind modern schooling, its tricks and traps are fairly easy to avoid….. teach your own to think critically and independently” (Gatto 38). In other words, our current school systems are not teaching us as individuals but as categories. As we are tested and divided due to scores on test which pick and choose where we rank within the system. In my opinion, education should enable students to work together but also build up their own interests, empathy and the path towards knowledge of auspicious activity.

From the tender ages of four and five children are taught school is what you are expected to do, at least in our society. From personal experience, I have been taught that education is key to a better life and better opportunity. Education entails individual human development in the cognitive, emotional, creative and social areas. All children are entitled to a free education regardless of race, cultural background or handicaps. For education to be an effective part of the students life, the student and teacher must be actively and enthusiastically involved in learning. A teacher needs to be well prepared and organized. They need to know the perspective goals for each student and ways to achieve these goals. Teachers need to work with students to help them grow and develop ways to use their knowledge.

My philosophy of education would include a classroom that supports creativity and gives students an opportunity to explore the world in the confines of four walls. Knowledge results from countless experiences and interactions throughout an individual’s lifetime. I believe the purpose of education is to allow students to discover who they are through exploring who has come before them, and what is possible for them in the future. Formal education should provide students with more than a foundation in basic disciplines. What does today’s society expect from students? A question that can either end with a positive or negative answer. With any kind of education there comes responsibility, commitment, and consequences. An epidemic of fragile families and a savage society filled with countless negative images puts many of our children at risk of becoming victims rather than the victors they were created to be. While all children are blessed with their own minds, talents, and the ability to grow and mature into adults, they must make a way for themselves in a world overwrought with sex, violence, and crass materialism. I did not spend my adolescent years contemplating what career I was going to choose and changing my mind every other week; I have wanted to be a teacher my entire life. I do not know why I originally made the decision, but, currently, I want to be a teacher so I can give back to the world.
