Pistol was one of the best (if not the best) ball handlers ever known to play basketball. “Passes flew behind his back and backwards over his shoulder, eyes looking one way and the ball heading another. His left dribble often twisted defenders onto their heels, the ball flashing smoothly between his legs, behind his back and through tight openings. Shots came from all angles and distances” (Carter). Lefty Driesell criticized Pete’s technique one day at a summer camp. He told him that Oscar Robertson didn’t use flamboyant passes, and still succeeded. “Maravich quickly defended his style, saying he wanted to be a millionaire: ‘And they don't pay you a million dollars for two-hand chest passes”’ (Carter). Pistol set outstanding records while he was at LSU. Throughout his college career he totaled 3,667 points. He reached an average of 44.5 points for one season and set the still-standing, Division One record. He also had an average of 44.2 for his whole college career. He scored 418 more points than his runner-up Freeman Williams throughout those years. All of this was even harder to accomplish because he wasn’t able to play on the varsity level as soon as he wanted. When he played, freshman weren’t able to play on the varsity level. The three-point line also wasn’t created yet. No matter how good he was, he wasn’t favored by all people. By some, he was called overrated. Knowing that people were doubting him just made him want to be so much better.

Bird had a rough road to success, “when Larry Bird entered the National Basketball Association (NBA) he was the Hick from French Lick, a country boy coming to live in the big city” (“Larry Bird”). Throughout Bird’s basketball career he was known as the white boy that came out of the heart of the Indiana basketball world (Katzeff). Scouts believed that he wasn’t extremely fast, not tall enough, and not a primetime jumper. Bird proved scouts and critics all over the world wrong due to his extreme dedication to the game. He shot five-hundred free throws on a daily basis because he knew that if he committed to becoming great, he would indeed do so. Bird spent hours upon hours studying the finer details of the game. To become a good rebounder, he learned all he could about how the ball would deflect off of the backboard, studying every angle possible until he mastered the art of the rebound (“Larry Bird,” 3). Larry never thought that he was skilled enough, so he would use every off-season to work through his weaknesses and strengthen his strengths. Even though he rapidly established himself as an NBA superstar, he always hustled for loose balls, played rugged defense, and dominated inside the paint (under the hoop). Most big time NBA players are remembered solely for their offensive play, but not Larry Bird. Larry described his work ethic in one of his most famous quotes, “Push yourself again and again. Don't give an inch until the final buzzer sounds” (“Larry Bird”) Bird was truly an inspiration to all, without hardly any naturally given talents, he was able to prove to the entire world that a little bit of practice can go a long way. With a work ethic like no other, Larry Bird will be remembered for an eternity by friends, family, fans, and people all over the

“Basketball is my favorite sport, I like the way they dribble up and down the court” – Kurtis Blow. My love for basketball started when I was very young, fifth grade to be exact. Growing up I always wanted to try out for my school’s basketball team. When I was young I use to always hear stories about my mom playing basketball throughout junior high and high school. Some of which made me want to play and do something that she loved to do. I eventually started loving the sport as much or even more than she did. This story goes way back to the fifth grade when I first tried out for the basketball team at my elementary school.
