Technology Saves the Classroom
Hello fellow Technology Officer and thank you for your time. I am here today to address the proposed change with technology in the classroom. Today at school I was feeling out of place and lost. Then I realized that there was something for me to rely on and reach out to people: technology. I soon went on social media and then I was able to connect with my friends. Once I was talking with my friends I felt so much more at ease. The school setting can sometimes be hard for me and social media is a way to make life easier. Some schools have concerns with technology in the classroom: Will students not be paying attention in class? Are students wasting time on their device? Are social media sites leaving people out

Margie Warrell, the author of the article, “Text or Talk:Is Technology Making You Lonely?”, states that, “...technology makes it easier to stay in touch while keeping distance, more and more people find themselves feeling distant and never touching.”(Warrell, 1). Some people may think that others are hiding in social media so they don't have to interact with people in real life. Having no actual physical connection could cause someone to feel like they are isolated. Feeling isolated can cause many problems in school such as, trouble talking to people, trouble focusing on assignments, and trouble handling the school atmosphere. Another reason people might think technology is making you lonely is when Sherry Turkle, the author of the article, “Alone in the crowd”, explains, “people who choose to devote large portions of their time connecting online are more isolated than ever in their non-virtual lives, leading to emotional disconnection, mental fatigue, and anxiety.”(Turkle, 2). People in the world may think that the stress from school alone is enough to cause anxiety, so why would you add something into school that emphasizes that emotion. Not having a connection in real life will mentally damage you and make the real world tougher than it already is. All in all, social media has many negative effects not only on relationships, but physically and mentally as …show more content…
There are many ways that technology keeps people connected: “... enable people in isolated corners of the globe to plug into resources and information they could never otherwise access…” (Warrell, 2). The author put this quote in the article to show that technology is more than just being involved with teens, it’s involved with leaders of countries and issues all across the world. Without information on other countries being shared, students wouldn’t be able to learn about the current world history. Technology helps bring new information into the classroom that students or staff wouldn’t of had otherwise. Nick Bilton from The New York Times explains how technology benefits the world, “They and other technologies, connect us to people who are not with us, geographically or physically, and make us feel a little less alone is this big confusing world.”(Bilton, The New York Times). There are some things in the world that need to be shared among the student body. If it weren’t for technology, students would be kept in the dark and wouldn’t stay educated on new and upcoming things happening in the world. With the help of technology everyone can get all the information to stay knowledgeable on current topics and situations happening throughout the
In the article, Twenge talks about how spending the majority of you time on your phone, alone, rather than hanging out with people, you become more depressed. The amount of time teens have been doing screen activities like social media on your phone, vs non screen activities like hanging out with friends have gone up in recent years. Teens that participate in more non screen activities have shown to be generally more happy and less depressed than those who spend more time doing screen activities. Teens feeling lonely spiked in 2013 saying they feel they had been left out of things and wish they had better friends. I think that because of social media you often feel left out of activities that your friends are doing without you making you feel like they are bad friends and overall making you more depressed. “For all their power to link kids day and night, social media also exacerbate the age-old teen concern about being left out.”
Technology has opened many opportunities for students, but is it taking a toll on their education? Based on the two articles the “Avid Weekly: When it is and isn’t OK to be on your smartphone: the conclusive guide” by Caitlin Dewey and Is Technology Killing Our Friendship By Lauren Tarshis, technology can have a lasting effect that can either be positive or negative. Technology has let the world stay in touch with what’s happening around them, which has positively affected students and their surroundings. Causing disruptions though is something not to be happy about, because if technology advances in classrooms, students can easily be picked off into the wonders of technology. Although technology has helped students prosper, there are still
however, in reality most kids who use social networking are distracted by it. According to the
Isolation caused by social media can also create depression of the mind. In Molly Edmonds’ article “What are the effects of isolation on the mind?” a researcher, John Cacioppo, at the University of Chicago states, “20 percent of all people are unhappy because of social isolation at any given moment.” It is proven that social isolation has a major impact on emotions. Having numerous so-called “friends” on social media may cause certain people to feel popular and content. However, reality kicks in making one realize they are lonely as a result of not having real friends. According to Molly Edmonds, loneliness often leads to stress, which is a risk factor for many conditions in its own right. Technology often takes up so much of one’s life that they actually forget about the world they live in. People often realize how lonely they are after taking a break from technology, which causes stress and confusion. Since technology is now taking the place of human interaction, isolation will become a common problem among
“How young is too young for cellphones in school?” by Donna St. George says there was “near-silence at lunch when [a] middle school allowed phones for a week.” These middle-schoolers were so absorbed in their phones they did not have a normal conversation. If teens are so obsessed with their social media life that they cannot function normally when given a phone, they will not make conversation and will have weaker relationships. Teens are literally withdrawing themselves from normal social life to become “social” online. As stated in “Is Technology Killing our Friendships” by Lauren Tarshis, “1 in 4 teens are online almost constantly.” This “1 in 4” could be doing things in real life, rather than staying online nearly endlessly. Therefore, youth is more into their social media than actual
Schools need to embrace the new world of technology and encourage it. Students are changing, teachers must change too(10 reasons) Teachers education needs to be modified to reflect demand of moderate classrooms. Students deserve educators who will teach in a more open and productive atmosphere. Teaching with technology and teaching about real life skills could be what is needed to encourage students. Students want to learn skills that they are actually going to need later in life.
One of a teen’s worst fear is isolation because it makes them feel disconnected, with social media they go to place to connect with all the new things being disconnected would have a major impact on you, not being connected to people can impact your mental health because humans are social creatures and live communication and not talking to people is a great way to build up stress.
“There was a clear trend for those who used these technologies to receive for social support”, “Social Media As Community, Keith Hampton”. There are some students out there that don’t like to express their feelings face to face, so sometimes it is easier for them to do it over text. If we didn’t have access to technology then students wouldn’t be able to express their feelings the way they like, so the students may be moody and not want to do fun things. Hampton also states in “Social Media As Community” “The data backs it up. There is little evidence that social media is responsible for a tend of isolation, or a loss of intimacy and social support”. The internet isn’t the only thing that can isolate or make students have loss of social support, other things
Schools around the country constantly use technology for students as well as staff but little do they know, could this really be hurting students? Almost everywhere students and adults are constantly on their cell phones either on social media or or texting and emailing. Some may contradict that having cell phones and social media websites and other kinds of technology will benefit students. Regardless, experts say that technology is rewiring our brains. It is beneficial for gardner middle school to participate in “shut down your screen week” by giving students a break from the non beneficial consequences technology does to students.
Can you imagine life without technology! Today living without technology is almost impossible for most people in the world since they depend on it for their everyday programs. People all around the world use technology to connect with people thousands of miles away and technology have made the lives of today's growing society a lot easier. Nowadays, people do not have time to go to a classroom, but rather learn online and take advantage of online classes to earn a college degree. Technology today makes online learning a simple process,
Before the Internet, students did work in books and teachers taught through books. Almost everyone in the same grade was taught the same, with a limited curriculum until technology took over the world. Now that society has endless resources from the advancements of technology, students, teachers, and others use it to expand their knowledge on certain subjects and also to complete their work faster. The effects of technology is explained in the text, “What’s the Matter with Kids Today?” by Amy Goldwasser, she argues that the Internet actually aids kids in developing skills in writing and problem solving. Steven Pinker also defends the use of technology in his essay, “Mind Over Mass Media” by claiming that people just need to control their use of technology.
Teenagers are also losing their ability to write because they are so used to communicating in abbreviations. These students have also lost capability to time manage, they desire being up all night browsing photos of strangers and chatting with class mates they see everyday anyway instead of studying for a major test. These scholars will now score a grade that is less than his or her potential, disappointing teachers and parents alike. Along with decreased grades, loneliness and social depression might be the effect of social networking.
“Kids are too obsessed with their selfies and not what is going on around them!”
I think that the use of technology in schools is one of the best decisions the school system could have made. Living in a time period of accelerating change, I think that it is important to lean away from the more traditional educational tactics of teaching and learning that may have worked in the past. And start to transition into the more modern-day style of teaching and learning, which involves technology. Students are always using technology. Whether it is them on their laptops, tablets, or using their phones to surf the internet or an app, it is a vital part of their daily lives. I think that because technology plays such a primary role in students' lives, the best way to connect with students in the classroom, is to incorporate technology into some part of the lesson. I believe that
The very first communication was the art of making persuasive speeches (rhetoric) and action recorded in the Judeo-Christian tradition found in the book of Genesis (the beginning). “When God begin creating the heavens and earth, the earth was at first a shapeless, chaotic mass with the Spirit of God brooding over the dark vapors. The God said “Let there be light” and light appeared. And God was pleased with it, and divided the light from the darkness. So he let it shine for a while, and then there was darkness again. He called the light “daytime”, and the darkness “nighttime.” Together they formed the first day.” (Gen. 1:1-6, Good News). After God had completed the heavens and earth, in Chapter 2:7 God formed a man from the dust and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life and ma became a living creature. Then God said it was not good for man to be alone. God caused man to fall into a deep sleep and took one of his ribs and made the rib into a woman, and brought her to man. In the text, the first universal public speaker was God, and we find him advocating for order, truth, light, life and changing the nature of the universe by his Word. Truth spoke to the powers. By this very reaction, God ordained Himself to be the Voice for All People, but subsequently commissioned the service of humanity to “speak up for those who cannot and will not speak for themselves because of rejection. “ (Luke 10:16 ESV)
