What is one of the first things you’ll hear about working in the TV industry? That it’s a good, exciting career path? That you’ll work with great people, have great, varied experiences, or earn a living doing what you love? No.
We are told that it is cut-throat. And more often than not, we are told that the only way we will be successful is if we act the same. We can’t even be nice. Ever heard the words “too nice for this industry” aimed at somebody? “I know work can get busy, you are ambitious and driven, but that’s no excuse for rudeness or throwing someone under the bus. Maintain your dignity, remember Karma’s a bitch.” (Wright, blog, 2014)
The world we live in goes about success in the wrong way. According to Richard
Dawkins’ ‘The Selfish Gene’, we are all born with inherently selfish genes, in-built for our survival: to self-preserve, to keep oneself safe from predators, to get what you need and keep it to survive. But this does not fit in our current society. As Dawkins states himself, “Let us try to teach generosity and altruism, because we are born selfish. Let us understand what our own selfish genes are up to, because we may then at least have the chance to upset their designs, something no other species has ever aspired to.” (Dawkins, 1976, p.3) Now, does this mean I’m asking you to be utterly, completely selfless? No. There is something about this quote that is wrong.
It is not selfishness we need to get rid of, it’s exploitation. “The dictionary defines
A deaf same sex couple went to a fertility clinic requesting spermatozoa that would help them have a deaf child. The clinic turned the couple away. The couple then approached a deaf acquaintance that had a history of deafness across multiple generations in his family. He agreed to donate spermatozoa, and the couple succeeded in having a deaf child. Not only did they succeed to have one child, they had another deaf child 5 years later. Both of the women were born deaf and wanted their children to share the same culture. They deliberately created deaf children and denied any hearing aids or anything helpful for the children(“Medical Ethics”). Even though the parents are deaf it doesn't mean they have to purposely make your children suffer. This
The word “Selfish” is a term that most people do not want to be identified as. The word is often associated with negative characteristics. Jon Krakauer explores selfishness within Chris McCandless in Into the Wild. Chris was a good man, but when he met people along his travels, he left them without notice. He was self-indulgent and dismissed good opportunities for his future. Chris also completely abandoned his family, leaving them worried sick about him. Chris McCandless’s quest for ultimate freedom was done selfishly - concerned only about himself, and disregarded the feelings of the people around him.

“Hey guys! This is the last communication you shall receive from me. I now walk out to live amongst the wild. Take care, it was great knowing you” (Qtd. In Krakauer 69). After graduating from Emory University, Christopher McCandless abandoned everything, gave his entire savings account to charity, and then hitchhiked to Alaska to live in the wild. In the novel, Into the Wild, Was McCandless justified in shunning society? McCandless was justified in shunning society because he simply wanted to find himself and be independent without any distractions from his friends or family.
The meaning of “success” has numerous interpretations, whether it is your own or society’s definition. Within Outliers author Malcolm Gladwell explains that being successful has nothing to do with your personality, so whether you are intelligent and hardworking or lazy and aloof, it depends on your circumstances growing up. Whether your parents are immigrants, you are the smartest man alive or have a habit of rigorous practice, your own personal success differs. However, Gladwell says that the conditions you grow up in affects your success. The idea of being successful varies from culture to culture. Therefore, there’s no definite meaning of success other than one’s interpretation.

The United States has been dealing with the issue of racism ever since Columbus landed on Plymouth Rock. The Indians were the first to endure harsh racism in this country. Pilgrims moving west ran them off their land wiping out many tribes and destroying many resources in their path. However, when many think of racism today, the issue of blacks and whites is the first to come to mind. African Americans have come a long way in today’s society as compared to the society their ancestors had to overcome. But just as far as we have come, there is still a long way we must go. Harper Lee, author of To Kill A Mockingbird, clearly depicts racism and what it was like in the nineteen-thirties through the
People all have their faults--it’s just human. And for humans, it’s hard not to get caught up in all the false dreams and fantasies of fame and success that come with everyday life. These illusions create a promising facade on what is actually there, and one must not get too lost in such fantasies, otherwise, the result can become too overwhelming to bear. It’s difficult to see past, but definitely not impossible. The solution is to just face reality, no matter how tough it may seem at first.
In the opening chapter of “The Selfish Gene”, Richard Dawkins is quick to make it clear to the reader what his book is and what his book is not. Dawkins explains that he “shall argue that a predominant quality to be expected in a successful gene is ruthless selfishness. This gene selfishness will usually give rise to selfishness in individual behavior” (11). Explaining that “we[humans], and all animals, are machines created by our genes” (2). Dawkins argues that for genes to be successful, they must be extremely selfish and ruthless.
We as human beings all strive for success. We use success as a measure of everyday life.
Just think about a human race free of genetic disease where everyone is intelligent and where society and technology advance at staggering rates. This is the future that is envisioned by those who advocate eugenics. Eugenics is the study of methods to improve the human race by selection of parents based on their inherited characteristics (Hartl). The idea was first discussed by Sir Francis Galton in the 1880’s, but was widely unaccepted by people at first due to fear that it would take away their basic human rights and be misused (Hartl). In the early 20th century, eugenics was a very popular and widespread idea in the United States and there were laws created to encourage certain people to have children, while discouraging others from procreating (Morris 66). The main reason eugenics has fell into such disfavor is because the Nazis cited it as the reason for the Holocaust (Morris 66). The use of eugenics by the Nazis can be compared to the use Islam by ISIS, or the use of Christianity by the Westboro Baptist Church. It is a concept that can be misused based on interpretation and extremism. Eugenics itself is just an idea to improve the human race by selective breeding, not by killing millions. Forms of eugenics should be implemented in society because they eliminate genetic diseases and problems, spread favorable traits and attributes, create a more intelligent and less flawed society, and help advance the human race as a whole.
Pro-choice has been a major topic ever since the women’s movements started in the early 1970’s, a question sometimes asked is that, if part of the population are so pro-life and worry about protecting a fetus, how come when the child is conceived they suddenly bash at you for having that unwanted child anyways, and that is hypocritical. In this essay, details include would be why people choose to be pro-choice, NARAL Pro-Choice America, the battle for reproductive justice for women and their right to make decisions for their body, advocates that are pro-choice, proposals for a pro-choice government, and Tomi Lahren being fired for stating she was pro-choice.
In this age in which we live, success is generally measured by the amount of money you earn, or the amount of wealth or power or number of promotions you’ve accumulated. I find that the older I grow, the more I view the people who are most happy and content with their lives as the most successful. Rich, poor or in between, they’ve tended to treat life as a journey, not a final destination. They took that trip when they were 25 even though they really couldn’t afford it, they ordered the $55 bottle of wine with their filet because they knew that even though it was expensive it would enhance the meal so much more than water would. They took a chance on a start-up company, moved to Europe or Asia and experienced things that most people only dream about. If they managed to grow wealthy from the experience, so much the better. As long as moderation with most things is practiced, things won’t spin out of control.
Success or failure in life is created by how you think. A mindset that is fixed in stone believing you either have talents and abilities or you don't leads to failure.
