The United Nations classifies a Refugee as anyone who is forced out of their country due to fear of persecution due to any of several reasons: race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion (“The 1951”). Every nation that belongs to the United Nations is legally obligated to protect these people if they find their way into anothercountry. The only way that these people can be deported is if severe conditions are met which make it unlikely that they will be sent back to their country of origin (CASSIDY). Many would argue against whether we should take these people into our countries; some of these people are in high positions or potentially high positions, such as Donald Trump in America or Milos Zeman in the Czech Republic. The biggest of these are why do these people keep fleeing, even after having escaped Syria or Iraq? Would they not end up in places such as Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Lebanon, or Jordan first? The simple answer is that they are, however just by virtue they continue past these areas does not automatically transform them from refugees to migrants as some would argue. Even though it seems like the majority of these people are fleeing to Europe the fact is that nearly all are fleeing to and staying in the neighboring countries. The most shocking statistic is that there are nearly 1 and a half million Syrian refugees living in Lebanon; this would mean that approximately one in every four people living there are refugees. It is completely unsustainable to have a quarter of a country's population be displaced people, and that is why many continue past these neighboring countries with the goal of going on towards Europe. While they are safe from terrorists and dictators, they are not safe from starvation in these countries
