Minimalist living is becoming more and more popular. This doesn’t mean that you are a vegan all-organic rich person either. There are simple ways to save trash that can actually be cheaper than what you spend now. Doing easy things like using bar soap instead of bottled and making your own three-ingredient toothpaste can dramatically reduce the amount of trash you use.
On average, an American can produce 4.4 pounds of trash a day. That’s a lot of trash, especially for one person. We are all guilty of making unnecessary trash. Maybe you used ten paper towels when you could have used one or you chose to eat a snack out of those convenient plastic baggies. Yes, plastic can be helpful and convenient but, reusable containers can also be extremely helpful.Think about it. To buy some toothpaste you have to get in your car, go to the store, pay five dollars, and then drive home. That takes up a lot of time! You could have just stayed home and made your toothpaste much cheaper and faster without the plastic. There are many stores that are also trying to enact this movement by providing waste- free products that will last a long time at relatively cheap costs. Some example of these stores includes, ZERO Market and a site called Litterless that finds waste-free stores in areas near you. I realize that going waste free can seem scary and a lot of people think it would require a lot of work, but, that is not necessarily the case. It all goes back to the three simple things: Reduce, reuse, and recycle. You can take old tomato sauce or jam jars and turn them into a storage container or even a water bottle. You can use reusable bags instead of plastic bags. There are so many uses for what we think is trash. Zero waste can seem impossible or at least extremely difficult, which is why a woman named Lauren Singer, has a single sixteen- ounce mason jar for those pesky fruit stickers or clothes tags. She is living proof that you can indeed go relatively waste free. She has over three years of trash in that tiny mason jar. That is a huge improvement from the 4.4 pound average of an American. Another way to reduce waste is to compost or recycle. Composting can be extremely beneficial to your garden. When you throw those old
We have all heard the saying reduce, reuse, and recycle from a very young age. But let’s face it, how many of us recycle? The world we live in is slowly filling up with the trash that we throw out every day. One day who knows, we might be living in our own trash and everywhere we look there will be trash. Is this a world where we all want to live in? If not, we need to take steps to prevent the buildup of trash in our landfills and even our oceans. Therefore, recycling needs to be encouraged because it reduces the amount of waste sent to landfills, prevents pollution, conserves natural resources, and creates jobs.
A teacher once told me, “One mans trash is another mans treasure, what he doesn’t appreciate the next man will.” Until recently analyzing this statement I always pondered about it as a metaphor using the thoughts, and ideas of people, but after reading Garbology I have come up with a literal process of reusing trash. On average Americans wastes 220 million tons of waste generated each year in the United States which ends up in one of the over 3,500 landfills. According to Edward Humes, the author of Garbology, “Garbage has become one the most accurate measures of prosperity in the twenty-first-century America and the world,” which proves that trash is a means to improving the success rate of Americans. This reminds me of the words of Confucius who stated, “When a goal cannot be reached, don’t adjust the goal, adjust the action step” because with the knowledge from garbology we can
Wherever one goes, “it” is everywhere. “It” is on the sidewalk, on the road, in the sea, and sometimes, “it” is in the wind. This “it” is trash that people have thrown into the environment. In the article entitled “Eight Million Tons of Plastic Dumped in Ocean Every Year” by Laura Parker of National Geographic, she talks about the increase of litter thrown into the ocean every year. There is also oceanologist Captain Charles Moore, with his video “Sea of Plastic” which talks about the plastic litter that is thrown into the ocean and how this plastic litter causes marine life to suffer. Also, the article by Nathan Green is known as “The Environment vs Cigarettes” talks about how cigarette butts are the biggest littered object in the world
This is a very hard goal, considering the average person produces 4.4 pounds of trash a day, or 135 pounds a month, which is equal to two full-grown Australian shepherds, or one newborn giraffe. People can prevent this, just by making their own things and eating only non-packaged things. Also, people can just make their own things, like Lauren. Lauren Singer makes her own stuff, like washable toilet paper, toothpaste, deodorant, and more. She does this so she doesn't have to buy them in plastic containers. Lauren also uses the 5 R's, reduce, reuse, recycle, refuse, rot. These help Lauren to remember not to throw away things, because people can use any of the following R’s. She also states going waste-free not only help the earth, it makes her happier, and feel like she has more energy. Just because Lauren is eating healthier, it gives her much more energy than eating chips everyday will. People will also save money, by not buying all of these things. People also get to change anything they don’t like, such as if they don't like the smell of their shampoo, they can't change it, but if they make it themselves, they can add a different scent. Another way people can change and go waste-free is by looking in their trash to see what they're producing the most. For example, if a lot of plastic containers are in someones trash, cut back and use less plastic containers. So, waste-free has many benefits, according to Lauren everyone should
In 2012, Americans generated about 251 million tons of trash and recycled and composted almost 87 million tons of this material (“Municipal Solid Waste”). There are many ways to end our environmental crisis, such as reducing our amount of trash, recycling items, and reusing other items.
Paper products are frequently wasted at home and at work. Discarded newspapers and old grocery bags is one example of wasted paper. The solution to saving paper is easy just take all of your old paper products to a local recycling center. Another piece of thrash that is wasted often is glass. Old pickle jars, mayonnaise jars, and jelly jars are thrown away carelessly in the trash when they can easily be washed and reused or recycled. The last piece of garbage that is frequently wasted is plastic. Plastic is wasted very often in milk cartons, soda bottles, and most other containers. Plastic is probably the most wasted thing that we use. Ether washing or reusing can easily conserve plastic. You can also recycle plastic like the other two things. Wasting of glass, paper, and plastic can be prevented if people would take the time to recycle.
Despite info campaigns, recycling programs, and inundation with horrifying stats - leaking landfills, islands of garbage in the ocean, vast quantities of food discarded rather than feeding the hungry - we humans are still rampant wasters. Systemic change is needed. But could the redesign of that simple household object could help us rethink the flawed concept of “throwing things away”? The power of design means a simple object can help redirect the way we think or act. I would choose to redesign the waste bin with the idea that it has the potential to effect change from an the individual household to the global
It's time to think green. To be a responsible citizen, you need to shift from the conventional consumerism method of throwing everything away and start recycling and reusing materials. You can start by cardboard recycling, which is one of the most used products, and it is also one of the most wasteful ones.
Wasted grocery bags is not the only place that a difference could be made in my shopping habits. Nearly all goods, when purchased, come with some form of packaging and, in many cases, there is a lot of wasted packaging. Some companies offer their customers the option to choose a product that is less wasteful. For example, frozen pizzas generally come in square boxes. Inside each box is the pizza wrapped in a plastic casing. One company recently changed the shape of their pizza to a square and eliminated the need for two layers of packaging. Now there is no box, only one plastic wrapping.
1) Are you aware of the amount of waste you create each day? I do not believe anyone is completely aware of the amount of waste they generate on a daily basis. It is such a natural action – throw something in the trash – that it is automatic and done without much or any consideration as to where it goes, where it came from, or where will it ultimately go or become. I do recycle and compost when possible, but that too becomes a process that sometime appears moot because products are being made from materials that do not qualify or require special centers for recycling.1 We have become a “use it and throw it away” society.
Recycling is one of the most common ways to keep America clean. The recycling bins are one of the most recognizable logos across the world. People all across the U.S. have recycling bins, inside of their household. The sad thing is most people do not use them, they most of the time just throw stuff in the regular trash that could be recycled. For example, plastic, paper, cans, glass, cardboard, and even computer hardware (www.recycleacrossamerica.org). People don’t realize that they could be doing the world a big favor, just by recycling these everyday items.
People Need to Recycle In the United Sates, where the population is inflated every year. The amount of space for landfills decreases every day. The need for recycling should not be asked, it should just be done out of habit. Everyone in America needs to recycle, to help the lamdfill problem, help the environment, and help produce new products from recycled goods. In America there is about two-hundred and eight tons of residential and commercial trash generated a year, 4.3 pounds per person a day (Prichard 1A). This is an overwhelming amount of trashed produced yearly. When people recycle this number can be drastically cut. But many people do not practice and use
For a great majority of the households in America, one universal item that is found in almost every home is a trashcan lined with a white or black drawstring bag. Americans use billions of these trash bags each year, disposing of food and other waste. Often times, an average family will go through three to four of these bags each week. While there is nothing initially puzzling about the use of garbage bags, it does call into question why a rival product that is cheaper and reusable has yet to catch on in American markets. After all, more and more Americans are turning to “greener” lifestyles, seeking to reduce their environmental footprint while simultaneously cutting back on unnecessary expenses.
Recycling also helps to conserve energy. It takes a considerable amount of energy to create the number of plastic bottles or aluminum cans required in the current world, creating large amounts of harmful emissions both into the air and sometimes into marine ecosystems. Recycling can help reduce energy used to manufacture such products because making them from recycled materials takes less energy. For example, if plastic
Waste reduction, or waste prevention, is critical in today’s growing world population. In a society with so many people, and an ever-growing population, resources need to be saved and used sparingly. Waste reduction is a method of managing the waste created and how it is disposed of. Waste reduction means that less waste is produced, which equals less waste removal costs, and helps keep the environment clean. Waste reduction can be achieved through the using of less plastic and other similar materials that get thrown into landfills, and by using every-day, reusable objects, such as water bottles and silverware, instead of plastic bottles and plastic utensils.
