47,725 or about 8% of the homeless population are veterans and 50% of the homeless people are over 50 years old in the U.S. Homelessness is an unsatisfactory issue that we as humans do not see the importance of the help they need. In our community, we take things for granted and not worry about the importance of helping others. The unfortunate people living in the streets have passed through difficult times and appreciate small or big things. Homeless is a person without a home, and therefore typically living on the streets. Some homeless people have become abusive of drugs, alcohol, and other different type of drugs. Homelessness is a major problem in our society. Homelessness contaminates our city, makes our city look dirty, and it is priority to fix this problem. To begin, homelessness contaminates our city and spreads diseases like Hepatitis A, HIV/AIDS of sexually transmitted infections, virus and Tuberculosis. For example, when the unhoused go to the public bathroom, sometimes they do not clean themselves or wash their hands. During, the homeless pass it on to their neighbors or other living creatures and spread or contaminate with different types of diseases. Homeless contaminate our city by littering on the ground with plastic, foil, and other types of things that contaminate. Based on what I have seen, one example is when I go down to the Santa Ana Public Library my mom, sister, and I see that there are various amounts of trash on the ground. To include, when my family and I pass through the Angels Stadium in Anaheim I see that there are numerous homeless people that are contaminating our environment with plenty of diseases. To add, in the short story ¨What do Fish Have to do With Anything¨ by Avi, it states that ¨his matted, streaky gray hair hung like a ragged curtain over his dirty face”when describing the homeless man. As a matter of fact, the author states, his shoes were torn; he had rough hands that lay upon his knees; and his hand was palm up. No one seemed to pay him any attention and he begs for money. Because he is filthy, most likely he is carrying bacteria that may cause diseases. In my community, near the riverbed you can tell that the homeless leave their feces
Is there anything you own, particularly anything expensive which the thought of living without sends a shiver down your spine? You’d almost certainly be lying if you said no. There are so many amazing (but pricey) things you can buy these days, like super advanced smartphones, consoles with every kind of game imaginable and life size statues of TV characters (should you be so inclined).
One of the biggest leading social issues around the world is homelessness. In the United States alone, there are more than half a million people experiencing homelessness. There are different factors that led a person to homelessness, economic, social, political issues, and natural disasters. But in the United States, homelessness is often caused by system failure, and people and with related issues. A brief history of homelessness, the issues documented during the early colonial period, back then it was viewed as a character flaw in the person and not outside causes. The Great Depression hits the United States hard and millions lost their jobs result in homelessness. Comes swooping in with the New Deal policy from presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt helps save the economy by providing jobs and helps reduce homeless population (Homelessness). In the early 80’s the economy was losing jobs again due to the decline of manufacturing, causes a high-rise in homelessness. That led to many cutbacks in affordable housing, medical care that makes many mentally ill patients unable to afford housing. With that many Individuals with disabilities or mental health issues that can’t afford proper health can be in danger of homelessness. But for those who are already living on the streets don’t have access to nutrient, personal hygiene, and other serious health conditions. There is some organization across the United States that provides health care service for
Every night across America, roughly 32,000 people between the ages of 18 and 24 are homeless (Youth Homelessness). In the same night, hundreds of thousands of girls say goodnight to their fellow sorority sisters before crawling into their beds. As a Panhellenic community, University of Nebraska gives girls the opportunities to create friendships, form connections, and build strong women. We are called to be active members of society, and use our fortunate lives to change the world we live in. After visiting Community First! Village of Austin, Texas, it has become aware to me the severity of homelessness in America and how simple it can be to change it. Community First! not only builds tiny homes through donations for homeless people around Austin, but gives them a community to become a part of. Donating money to build a tiny house at Community First! Village would not only strengthen UNL’s Panhellenic Council’s generous reputation, but also support the movement to end homelessness through providing a home and community to a young outcasted individual.
Homelessness is a huge issue worldwide that not only affects the person experiencing it, but it also affects society. Homeless individuals specifically those laying in the street are everywhere around the world, yet they are invisible. Most homeless individuals do not have access to healthcare and live in poverty, which means they
Homelessness is a major issue worldwide, which appears to be growing at a rapid rate. Many unfortunate factors play a role in one becoming homeless and living on the streets with no shelter, little or no food, and lack of clothing to keep warm. Some factors that may lead to homelessness are a substantial decrease in income, loss of employment, mental issues, drug and alcohol addiction, running away from home or major life events such as a death in the family. In addition, as the homeless population grows, resources such as shelters become full and overcrowded leaving people with nowhere to sleep other than a park bench, under a bridge, on the side walk or on the side of a building. Sadly, society judges those in these predicaments, many fail to listen to the stories of homeless individuals or attempt to understand why and what they’re going through. Furthermore, much of society continues to go through life as if the homeless population doesn’t exist, doing little or nothing at all to help them in any way possible. Although homelessness is a much larger issue than myself, I felt the need to do my part in helping the homeless in whichever way achievable. Therefore, for my public project, I decided to do what was necessary to provide homeless individuals, that are without shelter, with coats and blankets to keep warm during the winter months. To make this happen, I thought of a plan to put into action to accomplish the goal. I built a team of likeminded individuals that would help do the necessary work to accomplish the set goal, we collectively worked together as a group to implement and follow a plan and moved forward to execute it.
People who are suffering from mental illness are more likely to become homeless than a mentally able person. Mental illness affects more than half of homeless adults, as reported by the 2010 Annual Homeless Assessment Report to Congress. (Donovan, 27) Because of their homelessness, they are often not able to get the care and medicine that they need. People, regardless of socioeconomic status, should have good healthcare readily available to them. In the US Declaration of Independence, it states that every citizen has the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. However, homeless citizens are being robbed of their right to life when they are unable to access healthcare, and be treated for their illnesses.
In the year 2020 the issue of the Homeless had become intolerable. An approximation of the annual number of homeless in america was between 80 million and 100 million people, with fifty percent being “chronic homeless”. It was costing more and more for their medical expenses, social services, and for the criminal justice system. Worst of all, all of these cost came out of our taxes! They were going to bankrupt all the middle class, and possibly drop the annual income of the millionaires by a few thousand dollars. The prisons were filling up with all these dirty, jobless vagrants. Taking all the cells away from real criminals. Prisons started having no choice but to release convicted felons early. Drug rates in cities were constantly rising, and with that came higher crime rates. It was becoming clear that the homeless were now the only people doing drugs or killing people. If we the people didn't do something soon our country would become as bad as Canada, or (God help us) France. Something needed to be done, so the government stepped in. Just like the perfect decision of the “Patriot Act” our government took this one into their own hands and decided that the
Homelessness is an enormous social issue in the United States. Unfortunately, the rate of homelessness in the United States is high, with roughly 549,928 people sleeping on the streets every night. Although the causes of homelessness are widely varied, experiencing episodes of homelessness is an extremely stressful situation which can have physical, psychological, mental, and emotional tolls on an individual. Defining homelessness as individuals not living in traditional housing, such as living in tents or sleeping on the street, homelessness is very dangerous, and the homeless population is the most vulnerable demographic in the country. The situation for women and girls experiencing homelessness, however, is even worse. Homeless women are highly susceptible to violence from sexual predators because of their high level of vulnerability, and their social status in society, combined with the high stress of homelessness places them at an alarmingly high rate of sexual victimization. A study sampling 974 homeless women in Los Angeles found that thirteen percent of the women interviewed reported being raped once in the past year, and half of them reported being raped twice in the past year. In order to reduce the occurrence of sexual and physical violence towards women experiencing homelessness, cities should implement strategies specifically targeting homeless women, helping them temporarily get off the street, and eliminating barriers to homeless women reporting their
Three thousand, and eight hundred men, women, and children sleep on the cold streets of Portland Oregon. Homelessness has gone down 17% happily but went up another 10% the next year.
Although most American citizens do not typically notice government programs in their daily lives, implemented policies have major effects on American citizens. It is estimated that around 1.35 million children suffer from homelessness due to their families living on the streets (Crook). With this massive housing conundrum, the United States government should increase funding for the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act. Increased funding would decrease homelessness by lowering the crime rate, educating students, and improving American living conditions.
Throughout New York or even the United States, there are many people who are homeless and without jobs to help them survive. Many mothers and fathers are struggling to keep their homes while others are already out in New York streets trying to seek help. Those who are already on the streets are seeking charity from others as the walk by them. And to stop this from ever happening there should be more shelters, jobs, and help/supporters.
As a short term resident, I lived at the Cyrus Centre in Chilliwack for three days. This shelter is community funded, through donations and fundraising, and provides beds for up to five residents at a time. However, this help does not cover the growing need for shelter beds. With better government funding, the Centre would be able to give at risk youth a short term option by adding additional beds to their facility.
Sierra Nicole had risked running a last-minute errand to pick up a few more supplies. As she headed for the grocery store, she found herself mesmerized and tormented by the slow-moving lines of people waiting to receive their ID cards. She dismissed her need for supplies, sat on a bench, and mourned for the thousands who would soon be going to bed hungry.
According to the website, dosomething.org, about 30,000 Americans die from suicide each year. Now, although we can’t first hand stop someone from harming themself, we can do our best to show people every single day that their life has meaning. You never know how many lives you can save just by treating someone the correct way. It is very popular for kids and teenagers to say bad things about each other; most kids may even feel like they have to say those things to be funny and have friends. This is one of the main problems we face today as kids. We think hate and bullying is fun and almost feel forced to do so. Because everyone has just accepted it, it has been like that for a very long time and is only getting worst. Even “good people” will do this now. This makes it very hard for a person who doesn’t like to do these things to make friends. Therefore, we all just accept it. Although this is an issue that really needs to be helped, there are many other causes like homeless people, natural disasters, and sick people that are just as much in need of help. What can you do about it? Most people may hear these things and think there is no way for them to help. Believe it or not, It is very easy to make a change. It may take getting a little bit out of your comfort zone, but, if doing that can help others, why wouldn’t you? If everyone just sits back in their comfort zone, things will only go downhill from here. There are a lot of things to be fixed; all it takes is one person
I think we did take the best part of the meat. We steal from the Indians, we take without giving their land back to them. We were tired of the treaties and decided the best thing to do is to exterminate them. Now in the present day, we look back on it and thing was it really the best thing to do. Today we see lots of poverty, decreased rates, and land take but not give back.
