Three thousand, and eight hundred men, women, and children sleep on the cold streets of Portland Oregon. Homelessness has gone down 17% happily but went up another 10% the next year.
The shelters in Portland provide warm food, water, a place to sleep, and someone you can talk to about your troubles. But first let's talk about how they got there and why. One reason is Domestic Violence, 50% of women and young children leave their homes because they get abused by their own husbands leaving them even though they know they won’t have warm food, water, or a bed to sleep on for them and their children.
Another reason is Mental Illness, 20-25% of men and women suffer from this problem so it makes it much more difficult to handle money is a responsible way. It also makes it harder for them to find and keep a job.
Despair and Addiction makes them feel like there is no way out and then they start to feel depressed and do drugs thinking it is the only way out so they start having addictions and then they get more depressed and feel more alone. 63% of teens also suffer from being homeless due to parents kicking them out for being pregnant, drugs, and others. Some teens also run away because of physical and sexuall abuse.
Grief is the last main reason, because of unable to deal with the death of a loved one they try numbing the pain with drugs because nothing else can do the job. But eventually become majorly addicted and would do anything to get high again and not feel the pain they do even use all of the money they have which brings them into homelessness. The homeless people always come back to the warm shelters, and I would too if I were in there place. But when my Dad told me about what he saw and the stories he heard I began to get very curious. Most homeless people have addictions such as drinking, drugs, and smoking. If the homeless people of Portland stop their bad habits they can spend there money on things they need and then hopefully eventually will be able to by thing they want.
I believe if we help the people in need they can help us in a way. What I mean is they would keep the streets cleaner and have more space for Portland to expand and have more parks, museums, and more.

Homelessness has seen an increase in Portland even with the 10 year plan to end chronic homelessness being enacted, falling behind the country as a whole in the quest to get the poor and vulnerable indoors. Currently, the nation is nearing its ten year plan to end chronic homelessness, which has resulted in little to no progress. This is quite concerning because a homeless person on the street will cost the city more per year than if the city invested more in guiding the homeless into stable housing. Experts say the main way to end homelessness in Portland is to create much more affordable housing, help train the homeless to be self sufficient, and creating a social safety net to prevent people from falling into homelessness in the first place.
Addicts use drugs to overcome their feelings. If an addict is feeling sad, happy, or angry, they use. This leads to their addictions. After a while, the addict can’t hold a steady job,
In today's society, we are faced with many problems. One of the biggest problems that we are facing, specifically in Seattle, is homelessness. Housing is one of the most important basic needs for a human being, but due to certain circumstances, some people are unfortunate enough to end up living on the streets. The government should build more homeless shelters in Seattle, and lower the cost of rent.
The amount of homeless people in humboldt county has always been really high, but one main reason for their homelessness is drug addiction. In opioids and homelessness The National Alliance to End Homelessness says “ A survey by the United States Conference of Mayors found that 68 percent of cities reported that substance abuse was the largest cause of homelessness for single adults.” This shows how serious substance abuse is, and that it's prevalence in the homeless community. A lot of resources for the homeless are difficult for people who hardly have any money to support themselves to afford. According to can Humboldt solve addiction one night at a detox facility is about 150$. That is too much for someone with no bank account, and very little money on hand. We, as a people need to try an attack this issue and get it more funding so that addicts can afford the help they need. A lot of people don't want to help the homeless purely due to not understanding exactly how addiction has made them unable to work. The way addiction affects the body is serious and if you don't get help for too long you can permanently harm your body. And a lot of addicts aren’t even homeless, but don't have enough money to afford rehab. Humboldt county needs to help the homeless and sheltered addicts by spreading awareness and providing better funding for programs they need to get better.
The land that so many people call the land of opportunity and prosperity still has its downfall, and that is homelessness. According to The Atlantic website, half a million people go to bed homeless every night and about 25% of those people are children. This number has not gone down lately either. From 2016 to 2017, homelessness in the state of Minnesota has risen 4.5 percent according to HUD, and it is our time to do something to change that. This is not a problem that is happening thousands of miles overseas, homelessness is occurring 30 minutes away from us in St. Paul and Minneapolis, and even here, in Hastings. It is our time to take a stand against homelessness.
Do you really know what the effects of homelessness is? Do you know how it feels to be denied basic necessities? Did you know the many health and mental issues they have to cope with? They are often rejected by society as human beings. First of all, so many homeless are harassed in public and rejected as a human being, and they are basically treated like animals by some.
I never realized how lucky I am; sitting in a classroom, wearing proper clothing and having a safe and comfortable environment to go home to. However, peering into the communities in Seattle and even Kitsap County, I see many people who are not as privileged as I am. Homelessness, in Seattle, has shown to be an enormous issue when it comes to the conditions the homeless live in and how their human rights are not being fulfilled. Consequently, the city has shown much concern to address this issue in terms of raising the budget, assessing the root of the problem and showing motivation to lower the number of people living on the street.
The little that homeless folks can find and maintain themselves living are also being limited like as if the air we breath had a price. We might believe that they have it all easy and that they can do whatever they chose to but that is not the case all the time. Secondly, people don't want us to help them in any possible way so they can get a job or in other words pass on. But cities are invading the little space they can actually call their own. Therefore we should lend them some type of help because homeless people have a difficult life to keep the city happy. We should make a change and try to help. We might never know if they can have that opportunity given to them later in life. Many don't have that chance to change before death surprises them
When researchers asked a group of homeless youth why they left home, their responses were rather heartbreaking. Among some of their answers included were, “she kicked me out because I was too much of a problem for her”, “my parents are abusive and drug addicts”, and “because my mom never had a house and did drugs” (Bernstein, Fosters 2008). Unfortunately the number of homeless youths seems to be steadily rising. The U.S Department of Housing and Urban Development database found that there were twice as many youths, namely between the ages of thirteen to twenty-two, living on the streets in 2013-2014 than in 2004-2005. Shelters are not able to keep up with these growing numbers, as the National Coalition for the
Due to rent prices and job pay ratio in Portland Oregon there is a lot of people who can't pay rent with minimum wage job with is what the majority are getting paid. Another reason why there is a lot of homeless in Portland Oregon and in the united states itself is for the lack of support when a person gets fired. Experts say that if support group were more accessible in the united states it could lower the rate of people going homeless. There is millions of adults and kids either sleeping at homeless shelter or on the cold ground on the street. A place were is trying to make a change in Portland to try to end homelessness is Salvation Army. Salvation Army is a community center that gives homeless people food to make sure they have a full
Many homeless individuals have stories to tell about how they ended up homeless. Some of them became homeless due to drug addiction. Some of them chose the life they did because it felt commendable at the moment, and they did not think about the future. While I was volunteering, I had the opportunity to meet with a few homeless individuals and they told me their experiences about how they manage to survive throughout the year. It was sad that most of them can’t control their circumstances because there are other complex reasons why they became homeless
Over half a million people are homeless in the United States. These people are all around us including; loved ones, family, and friends. Most homeless people around the country are easily looked over. People tend to think it doesn’t affect them, so they shouldn’t have to help. Although helping the homeless is not required, it is definitely the right thing to do. Helping the homeless is not not always a group effort, although it can be, all it takes is one single person to make a difference. It should not be the fame that makes one want to help the homeless, it should be that warm fuzzy feeling inside that makes it feel like it is the right thing to do. It also does not take a huge donation of some sort to mean something to someone, it should be the things that actually have meaning behind them. It is the little things that matter the most.
The homeless need 3 main things: food, shelter, jobs. Have you ever walked past a homeless person without looking at them or feeling bad for them?
Addicts blame others when things go wrong, they make loved ones feel guilty or ashamed, and maintaining an addiction can take a financial toll on a family. Children, pets, and other family members are often neglected and left to fend for themselves when living with an addict. Addiction can also cause separation in a family. Eventually patience runs out and people end up walking away from the addict when they refuse to get help or take responsibility.
In the article “Should You Give Money to Homeless People”, it is stated that six out of ten homeless respondents admitted problems with alcohol or drugs. Which has lead them to analyze and make the statement that the money they receive from people they misuse it by buying narcotics. But I believe that not all homeless people dedicate themselves to drugs or alcohol. Many of them try to find a better future for themselves or family
