Our schools have been deeply affected by mass shootings and weak gun violence laws. This country has had over 1000 mass shootings in the past two years and over 50 school shootings, killing thousands of innocent little children. Our government needs to put up strict gun laws that allow administrators in all schools to use necessary force against a school shooter or anyone who tries to harm students of such nature. In an article by The New York Times called “Can high school students make a real impact on the problem of gun violence in the united states.” States that we are in a generation. A Mass Shooting Generation. This is not okay, when a gunman can just walk right into a school and kill 17 people with no problem. Then we need to act, not only do our teachers and staff need to protect the students, but they need to protect them selves as well. The government needs to pass a law that puts certain locked gun points throughout the school. Just like the AED Kit or fire extinguisher. In Paragraph two it says, “even from inside a locked school office as they hid from the gunman.” This quote does not only tell us how scared the teachers and staff were but also how …show more content…
Then They Spoke to Lawmakers.” Talks about a possible ban on the sale of military-style firearms like the AR-15, the same gun used to kill 17 students at Stoneman Douglas High school. Now some may believe that take taking guns away is unfair and it will only make the problem worse. But only taking some guns away will still benefit the doubt of when someone thinks to go shoot up a school next. And yes, next time, because unless we do something soon, it might be our school next and who knows, maybe 18,19, or even 100 students get killed, but what if we could stop it or prevent it from happening again, the government must allow teacher and staff to have access to guns at school to protect themselves and their
Since 2013 there have been 268 school shootings in the United States alone (Everytown for Gun Safety, 2017). School gun violence is becoming increasingly probable. It is imperative that our government and our citizens come together to create a solution and implement a plan to prevent and stop the occurrence of school gun violence. The solution, for some, is to bring more guns into the picture by arming teachers, principals, and other school officials, or place armed police officers at school sites (LaPierre, 2015). For others, the solution is to make even stricter laws regarding gun use or to get rid of these weapons altogether. These certainly are drastic options; I must say that I do believe the true solution is to increase the focus on mental health services and by extension, mental health awareness. There is simply not enough focus on the mental health of our youth and of our students. Mental health services are the most important step to making schools safer, because this solution touches the entire problem of violence at its root level.
For example, in 1999 thirteen people, including a teacher, were murdered at Columbine High School. Nine years later tragedy struck again at Virginia Tech University where 32 people were gunned down including five staff members. Most recently, a gunman killed 20 innocent elementary students along with six teachers at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut (Rostron 439-440). LSUA cannot be the next school to be added to this list. Schools are supposed to be a safe place for everyone and not a high risk danger zone. These school shootings have sparked debates whether or not teachers should be allowed to carry guns in schools to protect themselves, as well as students (Rostron 440). Although guns can do bad things, they can do good things like saving lives. National Rifle Association Vice President Wayne LaPierrce says “The only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun” (Rostron 441-442). Politicians and the media want us to believe that more harm is done with guns than good and make us believe it’s the gun’s fault it killed someone, not the person who shot then gun (Rostron 454). My solution to fix LSUA’s small amount of security around campus and the
During the past few years, the number of school shootings has increased markedly. In 2013, there were 19 school shootings that occurred, taking so many innocent lives. Some may remember the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting on December 14th, 2013. It was the second deadliest massacre shooting in United States history, behind the 2007 Virginia Tech Massacre. Adam Lanza shot twenty children, six staff, his mother, and himself that day. School shootings are tragic. Violence continues to increase with these shootings, as well as with violence within the schools among the students. The big question is, how do we protect ourselves from these horrible occurrences? How do teachers protect the innocent lives of their students? One common suggestion is for the teachers and administration to be armed. The premise is that if the school staff has possession of firearms this would discourage shooters, thereby making the schools much safer. However, it is my belief that teachers should not be able to have access to weapons. There should never be any type firearm on a school property, excluding trained security personnel, such as police officers and security guards.
Thirteen people were killed at Columbine High School in 1999, thirty-three died during the Virginia Tech shooting in 2007, and twenty-seven people, twenty of whom were children no older than seven, were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012 (Kirk). These name only a few of the larger and most well-known school shooting incidences. In total, 297 people have lost their lives due to school-based shootings since 1980 (Kirk). Although this number may be small in comparison to death by guns overall, these instances are completely unwarranted and it is likely that they could have been avoided or at the very least reduced. These people, college and high school students, teachers, and even children, might still be alive today if our
Guns are becoming one of the top issues in the newspapers (The Monroe Evening News). There have been 394 incidents of students bringing guns to school in the United States since 1998 (Sutton). Legislators say that the law cannot prevent the tragedy of the fatal shootings in the schools
School should be a place of peace and opportunity, but gaps in the system of gun control threatens the safety of faculty and students. School shootings have killed a total of 297 lives, young and old (Slate Magazine). Gun control has been a continuous nationwide debate for many years. It seems that no one wants to take a stance against guns unless they are personally affected. In order to take control of the matter and prevent more incidents from continuing schools need to change. To achieve a safe environment in schools need to educate faculty, safe and students, heighten security, and assess mental health issues.
The reason is school shootings in schools have significantly increased within the past few years band now many are calling for action against this and two sides are being formed about this topic. On one side, people want to turn to gun right and want stricter gun laws on them and some want to ban the guns all together. On the other side people are recommending putting guns in the hands of teachers and school officers in the hopes of intimidating shooters as well as if a shooting does occur, having a chance to stop the criminal with and effective tool to do so.”Efforts to arm teachers and school staff were jump started in the wake of the 2012 shooting at Sandy Hook elementary in Connecticut, in which 20 children and six teachers died. Facing a public outcry at the massacre, and renewed calls for gun control, the NRA pushed heavily in the opposite direction”(BBC). Schools need to find a way to fight back or prevent these situations from happening. “Shootings at K–12 schools shock us because schools are general safe havens from the gun violence that is so prevalent elsewhere”(giffords). There has been shooting at schools with guns across America . One problem is that theses kids that are entering
School shootings have altered American history greatly over the past two decades. From 1997 to 2007, there have been more than 40 school shootings, resulting in over 70 deaths and many more injuries. School shoot-outs have been increasing in number dramatically in the past 20 years. There are no boundaries as to how old the child would be, or how many people they may kill or injure. At Mount Morris Township, Michigan, on February 29th, 2000, there was a 6 year old boy who shot and killed another 6 year old girl at the Buell Elementary School with a .32 caliber pistol. And although many shootings have occurred at High Schools or Middle Schools, having more guns on those campuses would not be a good environment for children to grow up in.
Throughout history many gun owners carried a concealed weapon. In recent years concealed weapons have made a transition from being used as protection to being used for harming others. Because of the rise in shootings colleges and schools are having to take action in finding a way to prevent shootings. The government is also trying to bring public shootings to a halt by tightening gun laws. The effects of being able to carry a concealed weapon has made a large impact in schools and public places.
December the 14th 2012 twenty first graders and six adult lives were taken at Sandy Hook Elementary School. The government is stepping in and passing stronger laws to keep the public safe. If gun control is regulated we would have less crime and less violence. Since the year of 2013 there has been a at least 175 school shooting in american that puts it at least one shooting per week. When it comes to american’s being exposed to gun fire these shooting are just a tip of the ice berg. A single school district in Washington D.C. had at least 336 gun shots in the vicinity of school over a single school year. This has depressed student enrollment by 5 percent. In the two years since the mass shooting in Newton , Connecticut
It is only April 16th in the year. Only about 16 weeks have passed, and there has already been more than a dozen school shootings. Innumerable of innocent children, fearing for their life and sadly, many of those kids were killed. Now think about it, it could be anyone. Any person could easily purchase a deadly gun, because the current gun control laws are inefficient. A change needs to happen now. Not only for the safety of students at schools, but for the safety of everyone in the United States. The current gun laws are extremely flawed, resulting in more gun violence and deaths, and these laws need to be reformed.
School shootings are terrifying and a big problem in today’s society. Schools have added lockdown drills, bullet proof glass and metal detectors. School should be a safe area for children to learn instead of fearing for their life. Instead of buying metal detectors and hiring more officers, there is a much easier solution in order to decrease and prevent school shootings. We have to be more alert about securing weapons at home and being aware of suspicious behavior at school in order to keep children and faculty safe.
Unfortunately, the notion of schools being a safe place is no longer a trend across American schools. Disturbing mass shootings in the U.S continue to shock the media. A school shooting is when someone attacks a school using a gun. The Secret Service says these shootings are "deliberately selected as the location for the attack". The reasons massacres occur in schools is because of poor security, violence in video games/media, and bullying. Shockingly the U.S. has the most school shootings than any other country in the world. According to the FBI, mass shootings occur, on average, every 2 weeks in the U.S. While the cause of school shootings are sometimes unpredictable, it is a growing issue and they need to be prevented. Most shooters don’t have mental issues, they have a plan to kill, so there is no singular cause that creates violent people. On April 16th, 2007, the most deadly school massacre occurred. Seung-Hui Cho killed thirty-two students at Virginia-Tech. As Americans, we no longer should turn on the news and witness these gruesome murders. We try to make sense of these murders, but it’s ineffectual. There are measures we can take as a society to help. The number one question in a school massacre is, "why would a person that has a capable sense of mind even do that?” It is our moral responsibility to fix these issues. In order to stop this problem, we need to find its roots.
Gun control is another crucial problem of school violence. There are way too many school shootings in America, the most notorious of these being the Columbine High School shooting. It was a Tuesday; the 110th anniversary of Adolf Hitler’s birth, and the school day had started just like any other day of school. No one could tell that there had been frustration and anger in the hearts of Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold. They went on like it was a normal day also, although they parked in other students parking spots and walked in the school with two black duffle bags. They were wearing long black trench coats which were a trademark of some of the students there called the "trench coat mafia". It wasn’t until they started shooting, with the weapons they had carried in under their coats, that the students and faculty knew there was something wrong. Coach Dave Sanders risked his life to save many students while escorting them to safety. Eric and Dylan walked through the school headed towards the library as the other students hid behind desk, storage rooms, and even bathrooms. The police and SWAT
Since 1992, 387 school shootings have occurred. In addition, 323 students have died in documented shootings over the past 15 years. 323 innocent lives were taken. 323 hearts were stolen from families. 323 futures of America disappeared forever, and school violence rates have only been climbing. Since 2012, school crimes have risen 52 dead students per 1000 students. Children five to fourteen are five times more likely to be murdered in the U.S. and the facts are here to prove it. 28 children brutally murdered at Sandy Hook in 2012, and all because they had no defense. Virginia Tech had 33 fatalities in 2007, and they are University’s with security. The question has been asked, what should we do about these incidents to stop them from happening again? Should we make all firearms illegal? That wouldn’t help, guns would still be on the streets, just like drugs. Should we barricade schools and not permit anyone to enter or leave during school? Then we ask, what if the shooter is inside? How would people get out, and how would the police get in? So still, the question is asked, what would be the fastest and safest method to protect America’s children? One solid answer would be arming teachers and school employees. If we did this, there would be an immediate response in case of emergency, and school predators would be more intimidated to enter school grounds
