Gun control has been a highly controversial issue for the past several decades. Gun control is a very broad term, and can have many different interpretations. Some individuals believe gun control will ban the use and possession of firearms all together. Others may believe it just bans certain parts of a gun such as high capacity magazines, silencers, and flash suppressors. Both interpretations above are forms gun control. However, the true definition of gun control is “regulation of selling, owning, and using guns” (merriam-webster.com). Placing more restrictions on purchasing, owning, and using firearms is an ineffective way to end gun violence. Gun control will be ineffective because it will violate the second amendment, federal and state laws have already proven to be ineffective, and increased restrictions will not prevent mass shootings. Before getting into how gun control is ineffective, some commonly misused firearm terminology should be presented. Generally, individuals not familiar with guns commonly misuse terms referring to the weapons themselves, or different parts of the gun. The misuse of firearm terminology creates an assumption that guns are scary and extremely dangerous. Many people do not know the enormous differences between a semi-automatic rifle, and a fully automatic rifle. A semi-automatic rifle is “a firearm designed to fire a single cartridge, eject the empty case, and reload the chamber every time the trigger is pulled” (concealednation.org). A fully-automatic rifle is “a firearm designed to feed cartridges, fire them, eject their empty cases, and repeat this cycle as long as the trigger is depressed, and cartridges remain in the feed system” (concealednation.org). An AR-15 is a very commonly owned semi-automatic rifle. The misconception that makes these weapons seem “malicious” is because people commonly assume AR stands for “Assault Rifle”. However, that accusation is false. AR refers to the name of the original manufacturer that first built it, ArmaLite (concealednation.org). An assault rifle is “a military firearm which fires a reduced-power rifle round, and can shoot in both semi-automatic and fully-automatic modes” (concealednation.org). A M-16 is the best assault rifle. An
"We are dealing with the largest mass shooting in our state's history," Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (Tegna) On a peaceful November morning during a “Sunday service at First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas.” (Grinberg) A young man across the street from the church “was dressed in black "tactical-type gear" and wearing a ballistic vest he crossed the street in his car, got out and began firing he entered the church and continued shooting.”(Grinberg) During this time “a man who lives next door to the church grabbed his own rifle and engaged the suspect, The gunman dropped his "Ruger AR assault-type rifle" and fled. The neighbor chased after the gunman, police said. The chase ended when the shooter crashed his car about eight miles from
Every so often the media and news feeds flood with reports of a mass shooting. Families mourn. In the days that follow, calls to action can be heard, and there is a demand for change. Sometimes minor legislation passes, but in the United States extreme change is rarely seen. Other developed nations provide an opposite comparison. Following the Port Arthur shooting in Australia and the shooting in Great Britain, both countries organized for significant gun reform.
According to Nicholas Kristof’s article “our blind spot about guns” gun control is a lot like cars regulation such that if we can regulate cars we can regulate guns. It took a lot of time and effort but thanks to regulations cars are safer than they were many years ago, and the same is very possible with guns. We need to keep our country safe. The first steps to gun control are improving on background checks and also requiring trigger locks on all guns.
October 1, 2017 marked the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history. With almost 500 injured and 58 killed, not only did Las Vegas feel the tragedy of a personal loss, but the incident had rippling effects that shook all of America (Flaherty). With the fresh wounds of the recent Las Vegas shooting, politician's initial reaction is to implement more strict gun restrictions and "lay down the law" to prevent a similar event from happening again. Due to the drastic laws being carried out, the topic of gun control is a current issue in society. Is the solution to implement more firm restrictions on gun ownership or can the government allow the people to be their own advocates? While the opposing views of pro-gun restrictions argue that is up to the discretion of the government, they are often narrow-minded resolutions with no hope to finding a real solution. This particular shooter obtained his guns legally and passed all background checks, going unnoticed until his plan unfolded. Establishing more strict firearm restrictions would not have stopped the Las Vegas shooting from occurring. The number of gun restrictions can not increase, the government needs to either fix the existing laws or do away with gun restrictions entirely. Gun restrictions are not the solution because guns are not doing the killing--people are, the laws only attack the law-abiding citizens, and the gun restrictions add another infringed upon right that the government controls. While voting against additional gun rules will not completely eliminate the controversy behind this topic, voting against these laws will be a milestone to regaining the rights we have already been promised.
Every day an average of 315 people is shot due to murders, assaults, suicides, police intervention and a bunch of different other ways. There has been an increase in gun violence with a 39 percent increase from 2015 this is highly due to the increase in gun control actions across America. People state that the Second Amendment gives them the right to bear arms, which is correct but we have entered muddy waters on this subject with recent cases. I propose that we have better background check and really dig deep into a person’s facts. As well as have better knowledge of mental health problems, before we let anyone bear a firearm that way we can prevent a gun from getting into the wrong hands.
October 1st, 2017. On the night of this horrific date, 59 civilians were killed and 527 were wounded at the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival, shot by a 64 year old man on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort. When his room was searched, investigators found 23 firearms in his room, many of them long range rifles outfitted with scopes and bump stocks, which allowed the guns to fire hundreds of rounds per minute (Goldman). From this unspeakable atrocity, an abundant perspicuity is created, portraying that gun control laws are unable to prevent many violent actions, including mass shootings and other horrific events. Even a drastic increase in gun laws cannot prevent men that have irreproachable records from acting recklessly, or predict
Breaking news, an “assault weapon” walked in a school and wreaked havoc creating the ninth school shooting we’ve had this year! You may be thinking, what, a gun with a mind of its own? Well, that is exactly the type of thinking the news and gun-control activists want you to have. I have never met a firearm who wants or even can shoot someone, have you? That leads us to think about who the real problem is with gun-control, the firearm, or the human? If these activists were to become successful, we would be able to see the effects. The consequences of people not being able to own guns would have tremendous effects on safety, such as self-defense, which is why laws should focus on placing more restrictions on who can get guns, strengthening the filtering system, and placing harder penalties for those who use guns wrongfully or who do not have the right paperwork.
Picture this: Hanna is sitting at home watching her most loved film and she hears somebody thumping on the entryway. She disregards it since she is not expecting anybody at 11:00 P.M.The thumping gets to be distinctly louder then she hears the entryway is being kicked. Before she knew it the entryway was kicked in. Presently if she somehow managed to call the police it will go up against normal 10 minutes for them to react. Weapon control made it too hard for her to get a gun. What's more, The criminal was physically more grounded than her and he murdered her since it wasn't his expectation to victimize somebody. His aim was to hurt or slaughter. Fortunately, this isn't the means
From 1988 to 2001, the usage of anti-depressant drugs in the general public increased by four-hundred percent (Swanson). The mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary took place in December of 2012, and during 2014, firearms were used in 88 percent of teen homicides, and 41 percent of teen suicides (“Suicidal Teens”). On February 28th, 2017, the Trump administration repealed a firearms regulation that prevented mentally disabled persons from owning guns. At the same time, teenage mental illness is on the rise, specifically in cases of depression and anxiety. A report from the Surgeon General shows that over 90 percent of adolescents that committed either suicide or homicide have or had a mental disability. Mental disabilities such as depression and anxiety put teenagers at a high risk for homicides and suicides. Teenagers who are stressed due to school, lack of parenting, puberty, bullying, and other factors can develop depression, anxiety or another mental illness. Allowing these teens easy access to firearms proves time and time again to be very dangerous. In some cases, the families of these teens have never been assessed to see if they can responsibly store firearms. The only background check performed is on the owner of the firearm, meaning that a person may own the weapon even if another family member living with them legally cannot. Loose gun control laws allow families with physiologically ill children to have access to firearms, without first checking to see if the disabled children in the home are responsible enough to be around said firearms. Repealing gun control laws instated by the Obama administration will cause an increase in adolescent firearm-related homicides, suicides, and tragedies similar to the one at Sandy Hook Elementary.
Recently I purchased my first AR-15 (contrary to views held by many Americans, AR stands for Armalite Rifle, the original producer of the model; for a rifle to be classified as an assault rifle, it must have selective fire, meaning the gun is able to switch from semi-automatic to fully automatic.). The media often attacks these rifles merely because they are black and have a similar body style to military assault rifles. Liberals see the word “semi-automatic” and immediately associate the term with fully automatic. As a person with a broad base of knowledge on firearms, I find these attacks extremely frustrating because the attacks are often laced with falsehoods and a general lack of understanding on the terms, capacities, and regulations on firearms. I could go to any gun store today and get a wood grain rifle that has the same firing capacity as a AR-15, but these aren’t attacked because the left-wing activists don’t deem wood
Gun control is a controversial and important issue all over the world. A gun, as a weapon for defense and protection, has been misused by many resulting in unlawful acts. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, dedicated protect public health and safety, in 2010, there were roughly 31,670 gun-related deaths in the U.S. About 11,100 were homicides (35%) and about 19,400 (61%) were suicides (Jim). Every day, a lot of people lose their lives unnecessarily to gun violence. Congress should amend gun laws to take guns out from the hand of criminals and irresponsible persons. It is apparent that guns have had both negative and positive outcomes, but it has also
Among industrialized countries, the United States has the highest rates of firearm suicide and homicide, as well as the highest rate of gun ownership. (Kaplan 1227-1233) The question among many people is whether or not stricter gun control laws would indeed reduce the number of homicides in America, many try and relate the situation here in the US to Australia and say that because stricter laws worked for Australia, then it will also be the same for the US. In the wake of so many recent mass shooting tragedies people are searching for answers and resolutions, but because it is such a polarizing issue, people tend to be split with their opinions. Gun control may be the answer for many countries, but it is not the answer for America.
America is a country where guns are becoming more of a common household item, more people have been buying guns to protect their families. While guns are becoming more popular in homes, gun violence and crime is becoming more common as well. As more people are dying everyday from gun violence and crime, the government and the people of the country are beginning to take the incidents into account and are beginning to build up more laws around gun control. But with these laws many people have begun to not agree with them. Americans are questioning whether having more gun control will help, or if it will create more chaos and violence in their country.
What is a Gun? According to Dictionary.com the definition of weapon means the following “any instrument or device for use in attack or defense in combat, fighting, or war, as a sword, rifle, or cannon.” Additionally, Google’s definition means “a thing designed or used for inflicting bodily harm or physical damage” Both definitions imply some sort of intent to harm or kill another human being. The most common type of weapon today that is used to inflict harm on others is widely known as a Gun or Rifle. About “ Thirty-nine percent of American households report owning at least one gun”(American Gun Ownership, By The Numbers). This is the percent of those who legally own a weapon. Those who do not legally own a weapon are not included. As the world becomes more violent and dangerous many feel the need for protection. Therefore, some resort to a weapon. Sadly some of these fall into the wrong hands. The statistics and deaths speaks for themselves. Something needs to be done about the use of weapons. Strict gun restrictions need to be put in place. If restrictions are put into place, and not improvement is made,
Lately, there has been a controversy about gun control due to an increase is gun crime. With all the crimes throughout the years, many people don't know if we should have more laws for firearms or no more than what we have now. Within the last year, there has been about 53,000 incidents alone, but the year before was about 52,000 so not much of a difference of the two years. With mass shooting between the years 2014-2015 here is the only difference of eighty that had occurred and been reported, but yet with the accidental shootings, they are about equal with 2,000 that were reported (Past summary ledgers). The number of deaths that happened in 2015 was around 13,000 and in 2014, it was 1,000 less than that within the year gap. The new laws not only affect the people who oppose firearms but
