October 1st, 2017. On the night of this horrific date, 59 civilians were killed and 527 were wounded at the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival, shot by a 64 year old man on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort. When his room was searched, investigators found 23 firearms in his room, many of them long range rifles outfitted with scopes and bump stocks, which allowed the guns to fire hundreds of rounds per minute (Goldman). From this unspeakable atrocity, an abundant perspicuity is created, portraying that gun control laws are unable to prevent many violent actions, including mass shootings and other horrific events. Even a drastic increase in gun laws cannot prevent men that have irreproachable records from acting recklessly, or predict …show more content…
However, even in the 18th century, many abused this right, murdering and provoking grief throughout thousands across the country. Therefore, limitations were inflicted upon the people, later termed as gun control laws. The “Gun Control” database defines gun control laws as regulations that “can hinder certain individuals from gaining access to firearms and can limit possession of certain types of weapons to the police and the military,” which is a resolute statement, but is overly optimistic and fails to address those whose sole purpose is to inflict harm upon society in every way possible. Since the the creation of the United States, many laws, such as the National Firearms Act of 1934, the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act of 1993, and the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) Improvement Amendments Act of 2007, have been passed for one sole purpose; to diminish gun brutality as much as possible (“History of Gun-Control Legislation”). Unfortunately, they have not always produced their desired effects, either having loopholes that allowed criminals continue their work, or simply being unable to thwart motivated villains. These unavoidable facts create the enigma of whether it is necessary to augment the security of guns with supplementary gun laws, or if it is best to rely on the American people and stop raising attention to the
According to Nicholas Kristof’s article “our blind spot about guns” gun control is a lot like cars regulation such that if we can regulate cars we can regulate guns. It took a lot of time and effort but thanks to regulations cars are safer than they were many years ago, and the same is very possible with guns. We need to keep our country safe. The first steps to gun control are improving on background checks and also requiring trigger locks on all guns.
October 1, 2017 marked the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history. With almost 500 injured and 58 killed, not only did Las Vegas feel the tragedy of a personal loss, but the incident had rippling effects that shook all of America (Flaherty). With the fresh wounds of the recent Las Vegas shooting, politician's initial reaction is to implement more strict gun restrictions and "lay down the law" to prevent a similar event from happening again. Due to the drastic laws being carried out, the topic of gun control is a current issue in society. Is the solution to implement more firm restrictions on gun ownership or can the government allow the people to be their own advocates? While the opposing views of pro-gun restrictions argue that is up to the discretion of the government, they are often narrow-minded resolutions with no hope to finding a real solution. This particular shooter obtained his guns legally and passed all background checks, going unnoticed until his plan unfolded. Establishing more strict firearm restrictions would not have stopped the Las Vegas shooting from occurring. The number of gun restrictions can not increase, the government needs to either fix the existing laws or do away with gun restrictions entirely. Gun restrictions are not the solution because guns are not doing the killing--people are, the laws only attack the law-abiding citizens, and the gun restrictions add another infringed upon right that the government controls. While voting against additional gun rules will not completely eliminate the controversy behind this topic, voting against these laws will be a milestone to regaining the rights we have already been promised.
Breaking news, an “assault weapon” walked in a school and wreaked havoc creating the ninth school shooting we’ve had this year! You may be thinking, what, a gun with a mind of its own? Well, that is exactly the type of thinking the news and gun-control activists want you to have. I have never met a firearm who wants or even can shoot someone, have you? That leads us to think about who the real problem is with gun-control, the firearm, or the human? If these activists were to become successful, we would be able to see the effects. The consequences of people not being able to own guns would have tremendous effects on safety, such as self-defense, which is why laws should focus on placing more restrictions on who can get guns, strengthening the filtering system, and placing harder penalties for those who use guns wrongfully or who do not have the right paperwork.
A common controversial topic that is discussed universally is the issue of shootings and gun use. Citizens views on the topic range from the wishes to completely ban guns, to the total allowance and ownership of such items. In comparison, some drugs may be illegal, although people still possess them. Would the same be for guns? Should more be done to implement the control over guns? Or should more freedom be given to gun owners? One can visualize the positives and negatives regarding gun control by learning more about the following: the suspected terrorists list, the black market, increase in gun crime, rarely using guns for self-defense and how extensive background checks would prohibit unqualified people from obtaining firearms.
With being at the heels of the Vegas mass shooting, the deadliest mass shooting in United States history, anti-gun advocates are out in full force. Being a gun owner myself, I am worried that my guns for hunting and self-defense are in jeopardy. The implementation of the controversial gun control concept has been casually taken part in a numerous amount of political debates throughout the course of time. If this act is potentially taken to action in the United States, it will stir up a large dispute as it will take away the whole concept of the Second Amendment allowing the right of the people to keep and bear arms. With attempts to achieve the vision of a gun-free America by appealing the emotions of a hurting nation, society seems to be
With all of the conclusions stated up to this point, the future in the United States does not look promising for responsible U.S. citizen gun-owners. The government does not appear to be heading towards the diminution of the strict gun control laws. With the new laws being issued and put into effect around the years of 2013-2014, all United States citizens that legally own firearms now must register all of their personally owned guns to the government. The recent date of 1 April 2014 has just passed, but this day stood the date when a long gun "eligibility certificate" is required to be issued to all citizens owning a gun that is not a handgun (General Statutes of Connecticut). The government believes that it is solving its firearm-related crime
Although gun violence has fluctuated since the 1960s, recently it has started to become a major topic of debate and chaos. Polls and studies conducted by Everytown.org have provided some extremely frightening statistics about the gun problems in America. In an average year, 12,000 people in the U.S alone are slaughtered by firearms and on an average day, 93 people. That means that our country’s gun homicide rate is 25 times higher than all other developed countries. Even though they were only mentioned as statistics, these were all people with families and passions. Sadly, the gun violence will continue if congress doesn’t start changing the way our gun laws work. A great way to start would be to enforce background checks on all gun purchasers, no exceptions.
The Gun Control Act of 1968 prohibited criminals, minors, the mentally ill, illegal aliens, and drug addicts from legally purchasing handguns (Landau 81). President Obama’s proposals for background checks and restrictions on high – capacity magazines and assault weapons was supposed to help keep innocent people out of harm’s way (Winkler). Numerous states and some localities have their own gun control laws that place further restrictions on the possession and sale of firearms. However, criminals will always bigger, stronger, and more vicious. Therefore, citizens must have the right to defend themselves. Guns give any person the ability to fight any battle and have a chance to survive. God made man, guns made all men equal.
One of the perennial tropes of the gun grabbers of the national Socialist left is that gun ownership is declining and seemingly after years and years of record gun sales the number of guns remains at 300 Million. Basic scientific logic tells us that positive flow into a control space will result in an accumulation, and yet we’re supposed to believe this isn’t the case. Recent analysis and polling has dispensed with these mythical notions.
One of the biggest controversies that people avoid talking about is gun control. This complex issue seems to have almost equivalent reasons for why we should have gun control or rights. On one hand, obtaining a gun can mean self-defense and protection for yourself or others; but on the other, it can also mean more accidents or mass shootings from inexperienced or depraved individuals. In my academic years since high school, I have avoided talking about this topic as I though the solution was simple: keep gun rights, but with even more strict guidelines. Being the liberal I am, I have always sided with gun rights, but as I’ve done research I now choose to believe that gun control is the best way to go for our society’s safety because by keeping guns accessible for citizens, we will continue to see more accidental or mass shootings.
Imagine a world in which humans weren’t forced to stoop to a criminal’s level in order to feel safe, a world in which arguments were settled with words, and power came from the mind and not a weapon. Imagine a world without guns. Unfortunately in the United States, this world has become unattainable, but stricter legislation on handguns would bring this ideal world one step closer. The handgun statistics in America speak for themselves. After comparing America’s statistics to those in other countries with stricter handgun legislation, it becomes clear that something must be done to fix the broken American system. In America, guns are too readily available to the public and the result is an overwhelming amount of deaths. Under the current legislation, America is not only losing countless lives, but also a shocking amount of money. And so, as one study’s the true toll the current interpretation of the Second Amendment is taking on our country, one should stop and think if granting so liberally the right to bear arms is really in the best interest of the country.
Gun control. It has been a very controversial topic for many years, more recently with the Las Vegas shooting. Some think we should put into place more laws to ban the buying and/or selling of firearms. Some think guns aren’t the problem, but rather the person pulling the trigger. Gun control is defined as the set of laws or policies that regulate the manufacture, sale, transfer, possession, modification, or use of firearms by civilians.. I think the 2nd Amendment right to self-protection and defense of liberty should be granted to all those eligible ( legal age, no criminal history, nonviolent background, etc). New laws would not only affect those who oppose firearms, but especially those who rely on it for protection. Those who are pro gun control believe if we put more restrictions into effect then the death rates would decrease and the likelihood of a mass shooting would decrease as well. Stricter gun control laws will not decrease the criminal element in society, but rather would take away from law abiding citizens.
In today’s society the second amendment of the constitution of the United States of America is one of the most controversial topics today. This amendment grants us the right to bear arms and that right shall not be infringed. Some of the problems with gun laws is that they’re not tough enough and that much violent crimes in America are because anyone can get there hands on guns, and they need to be changed to make it harder for Americans to purchase handguns, carry them as concealed weapons and better protect themselves and have more strict background checks and interviews on the buyer. Concealed- carry, 2nd Amendment, Mental Health, Background Checks, and Self Defense are important to gun control so that we can still keep our rights.
The right to bear arms has been around since the beginning of our great nation and has not changed very much over the last couple of centuries. In 2015 there were 595,930 deaths caused by cancer in the United States (“Number of Deaths for Leading Causes of Deaths”). Did you know that compared to the astronomical number of cancer deaths, there were only 13,286 gun-related deaths in the United States in the same year (“Guns in the US: The Statistics Behind the Violence”)? There are a copious amount of people who would hope that those statistics were switched so that they would have an easier way of changing our right; to where the government controls and regulates our right to bear arms. Many of the people that have tried to change our right have been actors, celebrities, news stations, and many other left wing liberals. If we were to adopt this way of thinking, our country would plummet quickly. Our right to bear arms is an unalienable right that is not to be infringed upon. One of the main arguments of our second amendment is if there is regulated gun control from our government; this could have a very negative effect. We often hear arguments about The Second Amendment’s actual intent, law cases, and shootings.
The discussion of gun control has been widely present throughout the recent years. The right to bear arms, stated in the second Amendment, has increasingly been taken advantage of and has caused significant issues to today’s society. This debate has grown immensely as mass shootings have been more prevalent in the past decade. The most recent and horrifying incident on October 1st of this year when a Los Vegas man, Stephen Paddock, opened fire from his hotel room onto a country concert killing 59 and injuring 500, reveals that more gun control regulation is a must. Gun control is an important topic to be discussed considering guns are not only being used to harm what can be innocent people, like in mass shootings, but also used to harm oneself.
