At the beginning of 2016, famous scientist Bill Nye posted a blog to Aeon in which he described his near-future prediction that NASCAR will become a field of Tesla-inspired electric vehicle racecars gliding along quickly and quietly on historic tracks, such as Talladega or Daytona, the drivers amusing the crowds so much with their eco-friendly cars that they inspire the fans to go out and buy their very own. But imagine being a NASCAR fan for the past 10 years and going to one of these new silent races, it would feel extremely unknown to you. That is not the NASCAR you grew up with. Although people argue NASCAR would do wonders for their sports by transitioning to electric vehicles, closer examinations proves that they should stick to their routes to ensure the most success in their motorsport.

Bill Nye’s main argument regarding climate change is, “We have to stop, completely stop, burning fossil fuels. The obvious, straightforward, we’re-already-just-about-there answer is to convert our entire ground-transportation fleet – trains, trucks, buses and cars – to electric motors with batteries to store energy the way that gasoline tanks store energy in our fuel-burning vehicles. In the short term, NASCAR could help get us there”. There are, however, many problems with his statement, starting with us being “just about there”.
