Personal Statement By Jamika Jordan Candidate for ¬Medical Program
“I have a dream that one day I will overcome the struggles that I have faced living in a poverty-stricken community.”
While growing up in Mobile, Alabama, I have always dreamed of becoming a medical doctor. My mother has been very supportive of my aspirations to attend college and become a pediatrician. She was the first in her family to graduate from high school and the first to attend college, which she never completed. Before graduating from high school, I knew that I wanted to obtain a degree elsewhere and not Mobile. Many of the steps I took to achieve this goal were unfamiliar to my family and me. These experiences have taught me that working consistently to achieve my
“What do you want to be when you grow up?” As a child, we have all been asked this question; and as unrealistic children, we all had dreams of being a superhero, princess, cowboy, or astronaut. Later on in life, as time went by, and as we became more knowledgeable, our answers became more serious. Some of us wanted to be teachers, business owners, or a veterinarian. However, I have always wanted to be a doctor, but not just any doctor. For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to be a pediatrician. Now, half way through my junior year in high school, I have started to question the details of this career, and all the hard work it takes to become a part of the medical field.
I have cultivated many skills throughout my undergraduate education that I believe will help me succeed throughout medical school. My decision to become a doctor did not happen overnight but was a passion that grew with me and inspired my entire life. I am eager to start my journey at Morehouse College of medicine and become a physician that provides quality treatment and works on improving health care in rural areas and underserved communities in Georgia and across the United
My mom immigrated from India to America in her adolescence and later was the first in our family to attend college and get a degree. I want to follow in her footsteps and go and get a college education and prove to her that I did not take all the back-breaking hours of work that both my mom and dad put in for granted, and to prove that I am willing to work hard. My parents both came to America with a couple dollars and a dream, and they were able to provide for me with little outside help. I am fortunate for this situation, and many, like me, have not had such lucky childhoods, and this has shaped my aspirations and goals in life. I want to go into the medical field in order to one day help other people. I want to make a living out of helping
My effort to serve my community have been an immensely important area that I always try to expand on. From my hundred and seventy service hours, I have learned that giving back even in small amounts positively affects the lives of the people involved. My favorite memories of serving my local area is during the special NJROTC ceremonies when I am able to see the wonderful faces of veterans and military families when we present the colors or the veteran with a flag. Through school, I have been able to see the faces of incoming freshmen in my workroom mature into the present sophomores and the students today. In my church, I am apart of the Ushering team which assists with the service every few weeks. Through this, I am able to see the bright
I was born in Indianapolis, Indiana and grew up in Lebanon, Indiana. My parents have been incredibly supportive in supporting my aspirations of attending college to become a physician. Both of my parents attended and graduated high school, but did not further their education. During high school, I knew that I wanted to obtain a higher education. Some of the steps I took to achieve my goal were unfamiliar to my family and I. Nevertheless, I pushed through the unknown and attend
The most recent challenges I’ve faced on my pathway to medical school include finding the time and resources to prepare for the MCAT while raising a family and attending school full-time. For as long I as I can remember I wanted to be a physician, but my only concern was how to get there. Growing up my parents emphasized the importance of finishing high school, but never expressed the importance of further my education. They knew my lifelong goals of wanting to be a doctor, but had little understanding of how to get me there. Shortly after graduation, I began (continued?) my educational journey, attending a local community college, then transferring to Arizona State University to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Life Sciences. It wasn’t until I transitioned to the university when I obtained a better understanding of what it truly takes to be a competitive medical school applicant. I began preparing myself for the medical school entrance exam, worked 10-12 hours in a genetics research laboratory, gained volunteer experience, and balanced a full-time course load. My plans were going smoothly and I felt as though I knew what it took to be
All of my life growing up I dreamt of being a physician. I wanted to be able to help individuals who like myself had never had access to health care because although my family was on the federal poverty level never received Medicare benefits. Purchasing health insurance was out of the question, because the odds of getting sick were way lower than not being able to pay the rent. To achieve this dream I took baby steps, I attended a technical vocational high school (MLEC) in which I received a vocational degree in Firefighting and
Growing up in a small town, with the knowledge of a small town community can have an effect on you. Having the respect and dignity to know between right and wrong adds and interesting aspects into a life style. Growing up in a small community makes you realize what it is like to have small class rooms and having your teachers know you by a first name basis.Knowing everyone on each sport team because “everyone knows everyone in a small town”. I had the ability to be able to ride my bike down the street without a real question of my safety where I grew up in Worland Wyoming. I have different academic interests than others may, I enjoy different extracurricular activities than other students, and life experiences that are unlike anyone else that have shaped me into who I am today.
From taking my first steps at the age of 8 months old, to walking alone to a friend’s house at 3(kids don’t try this at home), followed by cooking dinners autonomously at 10 years old, my life has accumulated to a series of beautiful memories that my father has meticulously sculpted to raise me as an independent young lady. He taught me the virtues of such self governing and the beauty of freedom that such a gift dons. Every day I strive to honor such teachings. It is no wonder that these lessons have led me to strive to pay for college by myself.
Growing up as a child, one of my dreams was to become a doctor. I played doctor games, had a medical kit, and took care of my patients (also known as my parents). As I got older, I worked hard in school to stay on track with idea of being a doctor in the back of my mind. I faced many hardships over the years, such as taking several challenging classes or not having the free time like my friends did. When I got older I decided that maybe I didn’t want to be an actual doctor but rather a Dr. of Pharmacy. This career would allow me to continue to help others, but still achieve my childhood dream of becoming a doctor. My perseverance paid
I am applying for this scholarship because i need the money for school. My mom do not have money to pay for me to go to college and i understand that but I am applying for every scholarship that i can to help pay for my college. I want to further my education to help my mom out but if I dont get any scholarships to help pay for college then I want be to attend a college this fall.
I believe that I am a good candidate for scholarships because I have been working extremely hard throughout my high school career, even going as far as relieving myself from some extra-curricular activities so that I could continue focusing on putting my grades first. Unless I am okay with ending up at LSU, which I am most certainly not, scholarships are the only chance I have of going out of state to attend the college of my choice, which is Auburn. I knew that Auburn was the perfect school for me when I visited the campus for a tour. I feel that its student body size is just right for me, and I think that I would fit in perfectly with the general atmosphere that the campus gives off. However, becoming an Auburn Tiger will not be possible
There are many students who are worthy of this scholarship; however, throughout my high school career, I have refined my work ethic which has allowed me to sit a top of Norview High School’s 2017 graduating class. Therefore, while studying chemical engineering, I will carry over my determination for learning so that I better prepare myself for a career as an engineer. Making a positive impact in the world is one of my life goals. Therefore, attending college will allow me to study chemical engineering and apply my knowledge and skills to solve problems within the world. Receiving this scholarship would allow me to focus more on my studies and these problems rather than on college debt. Since chemistry is a passion of mine, I aim to learn as
One of my academic goals is to get the best education possible at Allan Hancock College before I transfer. I will accomplish this by always paying attention to all my teachers and do all my work and most importantly make school my number one priority. Another academic goal that I have is to transfer to Cal Poly or Long Beach and obtain my Master’s degree in education. I also want to graduate with honor and with a 3.5 GPA or above. I decided that I wanted to be a teacher because I like helping people out and also I enjoy working with kids. I selected these goals because my economic background is not the great, most of the money that my family makes goes to the rent and daily expenses. We live in a small apartment and we are a family of five; we don’t usually go out and eat at restaurants only in special occasions.
Since I was little, I have always wanted to go to college in the United States & become Pediatrician. It was all I dream about. When my parents told me that we were moving to Florida to acquire a better education, I was so excited that you could even say I was the happiest girl in the world. Even though I knew deep down that it wasn’t going to be easy, I had to give it a try with all I have got.
