This is Mary McLeod Bethune School of North Lawndale in Chicago, and I am the new principle this year. Due to the poor economy around the school, things have been left to the way side, but I pray help give some hope back. Students are set back and 8th grade for some are their big celebration but I want to see them graduate high school. I want to be sitting in the audience at high school graduation and go those are my kids. Some issues at Bethune are based in the school makeup and location, teachers, readings levels, and the children encouragement.
At our school, we are in a poor area of Chicago, so the magnet schools near by can strain our school. We also have grades Kindergartner thru 8th grad house at our school, which can cause strain

The children will be with other children closer to their age and maybe lessen the amount of bullying that can happen with age and size differences. The next issue that I want to address is the reading levels in upper grades.
I hope to encourage reading with focusing on vocabulary and spelling and monthly reading goals. Being able to see words and knowing the meaning is important but also the time spent reading is important. They have seen the words before and then they have the meaning which informs their understanding of the material. I will also encourage audio books while reading a book while fiction or non fiction. The students will be able to hear the words as well as see them and put them to together.
I will establish a monthly reading goals at the school. I will give the students and teachers freedom in the goals, but also have a school-wide goal. Each book with have points based on difficulty and also depend on the students. If a younger student reads a higher reading level book, they would get the same points as a student in a higher grade. Either the points will be posted and/or be on stickers in the books. It will also be encourage that the student’s parents are involved in the process, and for the points to count they will have to tell the teacher or other staff about the book. I will also hopefully be able to encourage older students to practice reading with a younger students. Maybe have a minimum of how many book must be read to a younger

In my upcoming high school years I hope to try new things and push my comfort zone, strengthen my academic abilities, and make new friends, as well as strengthen my existing friendships. I look forward to attending Villa Maria Academy next year for high school. I am excited for all the new high school experiences, from the increased responsibility to the new freedoms gained. I would also like to attend Villa because I value my faith. Villa Maria Academy, founded in the same tradition of the IHM sisters that I experienced at Lower Villa, can help me to maintain my strong relationship with God.
My life has prepared me well for a future in helping others. Having overcame multiple instances of emotional abuse as well as social isolation throughout the course of four straight years, I have developed deep compassion and empathy for others. Being faced with multiple different instances of abuse that not many adults have gone through during my childhood has forced me to view the world in a more serious and objective manner. I have spent endless hours reflecting on my past experiences, comparing myself to others, wondering why things have happened the way they did, and how I can make my life better, even with the poor circumstances I had been given. I’ve remained adamant on becoming selfless and learning how to help others. I’ve
Beginning with phonics is an important factor when learning to read. Having the alphabet around the room with examples are ways that helped me connect letters and sounds. Other ways to teach student’s to find connections with letters and sounds are rhyme books, poem books, and songs. Showing my student’s the passion and enthusiasm for reading will encourage students to be passionate readers. I would model this by reading aloud to my student’s daily for a short period of time. After reading we will discuss what we read and our feelings on the subject. Learning vocabulary and expanding student’s word knowledge is something I want my students to explore. I want to introduce students to multiple genres and to be able to find meanings and structure to the words and sounds. I believe by enhancing student’s vocabulary it helps them to become better communicators in the future. I can promote vocabulary my displaying word walls and having a library and dictionaries available around the
One of the first steps in helping a struggling reader is to be able to reach out and assist the areas where they are lacking. One way a teacher can assist is to help the students discover and set reading goals for themselves. Having a reading goal can help the students have a purpose for reading. Some students may need motivation and a reason to read if the ease of reading isn’t there for them. Having a goal may help these students feel the sense of reading has a purpose. Trying new procedures and having organizational strategies can be beneficial to teachers when helping students achieve their reading goals. Michael Opitz and Michael Ford have found organizational strategies to be successful when implemented in the classroom as part of the reading strategy. According to Michael Opitz and Michael Ford, “when teachers are able to expand the way they think and use Guided Reading it will help the students become more successful at reading.” (Hillman, 2002). The concerns from Opitz and Ford are as follows: 1. Roles and Goals; 2. Assessment and Grouping; 3. Texts; 4. Instruction; and 5. Organization and Management.”
Something that I will use in my future practice is doing reading strategies with my students. when students are in the younger grades shared reading is very important. It is very important for the reason that it helps students to learn how to read. They are reading with the teacher and they will become familiar with the words. Shared reading is something that should be constantly. I would also have Specific literacy routines that helps the students out. From the video it was learned that the teacher Ms. Purlsey lets her students pick different reading choices during reader’s workshop. This is important for the reason that we want our students to become independent. By giving our students choices it can help to pick stuff on their own. Rather than depending on the teacher to pick something for them. Something else that would help me out in my future practice is having my students read for a purpose. I want my students to be able learn that from reading they will acquire something new. And lastly something that will help my future practice is conducting assessments on my students. By having assessments will show the progression of my students. It can also show me different things that I can assist my students with to make them more successful in life. With assessments it is needed in order to help students
Ebonyrose Campbell Ms. Milliner EES21QH-03 October 3, 2016 The New School Personal Statement The New School has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I’ve been a part of the community for a while since my mom has been working there for years. The amount of visits and classes I've taken there just makes me feel more and more like I'm already part of the welcoming and sophisticated community The New School radiates.
In a few short months, I will be graduating from high school. With that comes large responsibilities to take care of my own schooling and my own needs. There will be no one there to motivate me to finish my homework or to push me to school everyday. I am in charge of myself now, and it will take some time to get used to. Going to college is a big part of 2018 for me, and I want to start the year strong. Instead of picking a resolution or goal, we picked a word that we wanted to work towards this year. My word is strive. I want to strive to do and be better than I think I can be. To make my resolution easier this year, I picked a word that I can drive towards to get me through any trials.
One of the most unique traits of Central High School is its commitment to provide a well- rounded education in a variety of academic fields. As a student with a wide range of interests in both the sciences and arts, I see this institution as one that has the potential to give me the most forward-focused experience as a high school student. Not only does it offer all the resources and support expected of an exemplary establishment, it also exposes one to impressively diverse academics, individuals, and extracurricular activities. After much deliberation, I have decided Central to be one of the top high schools I will consider in my application.
Motivation will be key for my literacy program. I know that if the students are highly motivated then they will learn more readily. I will build motivation in my classroom by having a positive, warm learning environment. I will have a variety of literature of different genres and of different levels within my classroom. I will also have a variety of areas and centers for the students to participate in.
I started to gain interest in leadership and helping others in Junior High. I was really inspired by the upperclassmen. So, with the motivation I had, I applied to be in W.E.B. It is an organization where you become role models for your underclassmen and you also help around campus. I have done W.E.B for two years and for those two years, I’ve led many groups of kids around campus. I eventually became friends with those underclassmen. It felt amazing knowing that I am a person that kids can come and talk to. And that’s what I wanted, having people feel comfortable around me, but also takes me seriously. I may be goofy, but I can be serious.
As we walk through a dark avenue at night, brother in stroller, hands locked with moms, a fragile lady approaches us. She then asks “ Les gustaria ver un apartamento vacio?”. I don't remember my mom answering, but I assume she said yes as we start walking deep into the avenue away from the trees lights. The memory is blurry and difficult to remember. Later on I would realize how important this memory is since it was the home I spent the rest of my childhood in.
Motivate your students to take an advantage of the free resources that are available at their local library. Furthermore, they might be acquainted that they can get books, yet they might not be acquainted that they can try out to use the computer, try out movies, video games or even try to adhere community reading programs. Struggling readers can remain defiant to reading when they do not totally have to, On the other hand, the best time to establish them to audio books or audio visual read along websites is now.
I believe that all children need to be exposed to books from a very early age. By exposing children to books from the start, it will build up their interest and curiosity so that when they get to the reading stage they will succeed and have a rich vocabulary knowledge. By placing books in my pre-kindergarten class, the children will learn about the concepts about print, and as they progress through the year they will learn the the words in the story is what contains the message, and that each story has a meaning. In my book center, I will also have puppets that go with some of the books so that the children can use the puppet while reading and have the puppet mouth the words, or use the puppet and act out the story. In my book center the children will have the opportunity to read to one another as well as by themselves, this will help each child work on their listening, communication, speaking, and
Good reading habits are the key to the success of all the lessons at school. Reading is an individual effort that is sensitive to information needs and the development of science. Reading is an activity that involves physical, mind, and emotion. Therefore, reading habits among students become indispensable in learning activities. The role of students in building reading habits is necessary. Students are required to have awareness in reading
