Throughout the course of the semester I have learned a variety of things about psychology. I have learned about the founding father of psychology Wilhelm Wundt, various theories and case studies, coping mechanisms, and stressors. After going through each of the sections this semester, I have learned quite a few ways to utilize psychology in my personal life, professional life and academic career, in a way that is beneficial to me and progressive to my future.
Psychology is the study of the mind and the way in which it functions. Through further analysis of psychology in depth, I’ve learned that I can find uses for it in my everyday life. In learning about personality types, I can understand myself and those around me and how to build strong relationships. I’ve learned that in order to make strong relationships there are four factors that contribute to it, proximity, similarity, physical attractiveness, and personal characteristics (Grison & Gazzaniga, 2017). I know that I can make lasting friendships or romantic relationships through knowing which things affect them and how to strengthen them. I can also apply psychology to my personal life through learning how to measure intelligence or how people automatically categorize their thinking because it helps me understand myself a bit better. Also learning about social psychology, the way people view people and how people make pre-judgements about others, helps me understand not to make sudden judgements because I know that can
Nowadays, psychology is contributed in almost all professions like law, business, computer science, or health care. It may not be obvious how, but the ability to understand someone’s behavior, feelings and emotions are extremely beneficial in these majors. In any profession, people must get along with other people. Since everyone comes from different backgrounds, the way they respond will also differ. For example, in the field of nursing, it is important to study psychology. Nursing is not just providing the needed medical care for the physical body, but caring for the person’s frame of mind especially in an emergency or trauma. Psychology is valuable in nursing because the medical practitioner will better understand how to communicate with
On 08/20/2017 at 1002 hours FTO Wheeler #4361 and I responded to St. Luke’s Hospital emergency room entrance, on 3555 Cesar Chavez St., regarding a women in a hospital gown trying to break the caller’s vehicle window with a brick. Officer Wheeler and I were in full police uniform driving a marked patrol unit when we responded.
This reflection will discuss personal diffidence and how it has influenced my academic studies, including my practice within placement settings. Gibbs reflective cycle (Gibbs, 1998) has been utilised as it illustrates a clear structure for the process of reflection. To conclude this reflection will draw together the themes which have emerged and highlight a clear action for future learning that will be used in order to enhance my future practice.
Psychology can be applied to everyday life in many ways. The three main ways Psychology applies to my life is through motivation and emotion, Stress and health and Psychological therapies. These topics of psychology are the ones that best describe my life. When most people think of psychology they think of therapists and psychological disorders. Psychology is much more than that and applies to everyone’s life in some form.
I consider myself someone who values the question “why?”. My entire life I have caught myself questioning things that others never really seemed to care to think about, about a multitude of subjects. Specifically, asking those close to me like my parents, siblings, friends, and now my husband. Leaning this semester about Psychology has been very interesting to me because it had helped me understand the “why” behind the way the brain works. In this class, Lifespan Growth and Development, I have learned about concepts that I will be able to carry with me throughout my college education, my professional career, my marriage, and my eventual parenthood as a mother.
A wise person recognizes the face of necessity. It is important to identify with a specific goal in life, especially a career goal. When one considers the field of psychology it is important to acknowledge the various possibilities that are available to an individual who wants to pursue a career in this field. A psychologists are those who study the “cognitive, emotional, and social processes and behaviors by observing, interpreting, and recording how people relate to one another and their environment”(Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2016). The field of psychology constitutes a number of subfields. However, I will discuss this subfield of my interests, why I chose it, and what I found most interesting about the field of psychology.
Benson, Nigel C.(2007) Introducing Psychology: A Guide to Your Mind and Behaviour. N.p.: Faber and Faber. Print
Psychology, the study of the mind and behavior, has had a tremendous impact on our world. It has changed our thinking and understanding of the behavior of those around us and of ourselves. Over the years, Psychology has had many changes and developments, and many influential people and experiments have popped up. Psychology has gone from simply blaming all behavior on Pagan gods, to studying behavior and the mind through a few different perspectives, which all view the causes of behavior in a different way. By analysis of behavior and actions, the field of Psychology has come to be our main way of determining how to heal broken mental health and help people to understand how their surroundings and thoughts influence their behavior.
As this semester is about to come to an end there has been so much enlightening information that I have learned throughout this semester taking psychology. There has been a few chapters that have really stuck with me and have intrigued me to write about.
As a physical therapy student, many peers have asked why I chose to minor in psychology rather than taking a simple course in human performance and fitness or biology. Taking this course, I am confident in my minor decision and realize the importance of mastering and utilizing effective communication, genuine listening, and authentic presence, especially in a physical therapy setting. Several counseling theories were presented over the course of the semester looking at their basic philosophies, the relationship between client and therapist, and key components to effective treatment. There were three theories in particular, Adlerian therapy, existential therapy, and rational emotive behavior therapy, which I found to really resonate with my beliefs, values, and experiences. By integrating these three theories together, using the common factors approach, I was able to identify similar core beliefs and principles in each to create my final theory of change.
Choosing psychology as a major has been very interesting so far and to this point of my education I do not feel I have any misgivings in becoming a psychological practitioner. One of the important experiences that make me confident about psychological practitioner is that I am still not bored with the major and my classes have been very interesting to me so far. Psychologists study mental processes and human behavior by observing, interpreting, and recording how people and other animals relate to one another and the environment. To do this, psychologists often look for patterns that will help them understand and predict behavior using scientific methods, principles, or procedures to test their ideas. Psychologists formulate theories, or hypotheses, which are possible explanations for what they observe and I enjoy gathering information because I have seen myself creating hypothesis since I was a child about the things I didn’t understand at the time.
When looking into one’s life, aspects of psychology cannot be found throughout. Psychology is the foundation of one’s thoughts, relationships, and academics. Without psychology, the ability to understand not only themselves, but also the people who surround them in their lives. They would not understand the reasons behind their professional life and may not even be in that profession as they used psychology to reach where they were. Additionally, critical thinking is due to psychology and academics are dependent on critical thinking throughout each year. With such importance in every part in each person’s life, psychology is constantly portrayed and researched to understand more about it. Many do not even think of the importance of psychology as they it is simply them living their life and they do not see that the underlying cause and effect is psychology. Psychology’s importance is shown through one’s personal life, their professional life, and their academics careers, and can be upheld with upmost importance as it continues to be researched.
Psychology is easily one of the most applicable sciences when it comes to everyday life. Everyone has behavior and mental processes. Understanding and applying the following concepts to my life will have or have already had a positive impact on my overall well being: the five-factor model of personality, depression disorders, happiness, stress coping, and group influence.
The system consistently fills silence in a timely manner, so by the time I’ve worked up the courage to say something I’m hesitant to, the conversation has frequently moved on. I can’t quite figure out how to word it, but there’s also something kinda artificial about the system that stops me from actually feeling things. It feels like the system doesn’t really connect to peoples’ emotions. One interpretation for this feeling is that people express vulnerabilities or try to connect with those doing so, they’re not doing it entirely because they want to, but partially because it’s expected and encouraged. Another is that we just haven’t really bonded with each other and are just forcing it.No matter the reason, I have a hard time feeling emotion in class, which completely kills my desire to be vulnerable.
The writing I did this semester for Engl 110c has meant alot to me because I was able to pick a topic that has such a huge impact in my life. I was able to do the topic about Navy Wives, which has a huge impact on me. I recently became a navy wife a year ago and my life has changed drastically. I was able to share everything I wanted to about the life of a military wife through my writings, as well as share to my classmates about my topic. I really enjoyed creating my ePortfolio because I could come out of my shell and be me. I made a ePortfolio website that would be for military wives to read. I believe this website would be perfect for any military wife reading it. I was able to give tips and information on what it’s like to be a military wife, how to prepare for deployments and how to stay strong being a military wife.
