A Personal Philosophy of Guidance

My personal philosophy of guidance, as a future counselor someday, is to guide an individual live a life of happiness and contentment in the midst of a discontent world. For an individual to achieve this, I will help her realize and achieve his or her full potentials through growing in spirituality. Spirituality, for me, is having and maintaining a personal relationship with the Creator--God. As a Christian, I believe spirituality is very significant in an individual’s life. It will also be a renewing and refreshing kind of experience for him/her since they are encouraged to trust in Someone that is far greater than we could ever imagine. It is also in spirituality that we realize our own purpose and see the true meaning of life and eventually learning to live a life of contentment and happiness. The process of counseling in this aspect should start with a needs assessment in the clients’ spirituality. Asking open-ended questions is a good way to begin exploring about the clients’ needs. In this way, the counselor can keep track on the spiritual growth and maturity of a client if ever he/she has one. This is also important for the counselor to have a gist of the over-all concern of the client as well as to have an awareness of the client’s spiritual outlook. It is also important for a counselor to explore with a client on how they view life in a spiritual context. In this way, it may assist the counseling process tremendously. Specifically, when a counselor wants to specialize in Christian counseling, he/she should be aware of how they deal with their clients. One perfect example is the use and timing of employing biblical scriptures to the clients to aid in their healing. This example may provide comfort to what the client is suffering from and will immediately open an avenue of hope for the client.
