Personal Narrative: My Trip To Dallas Baptist University

Looking back, I regard attending WBU one of my best lifetime decisions. Before I discuss my experiences at WBU, it would be prudent to first give a brief background of myself. To begin with, I have had the opportunity of serving my country in the military and in a way; this has largely shaped my personality and my outlook of life. In that regard, I have come to appreciate the value of life more than ever before. Further, the time I have served in the military has taught me that success is possible in any facet of life with the right attitude, determination and personal sacrifice.

Church, temple, sanctuary, or the Lords’s house, these are just a few names that your average person might call the place you come to worship God, I have always called it home. The Church I have been attending, Memorial Baptist Church, which is also where I attend high school, I have been attending since I was the age of three years old. Moving to the area that my family lives in now, I do not believe is any accident. At the age of two years old, my father was stationed in Tennessee for the military. After passing away from brain cancer, my Mother moved my two older sisters and me to Killeen Texas, to be closer to her family. Upon graduating high school a large amount of my fellow students were well aware of which university and which degree they would wish to study and I was not one of those students. Up until recently I was also concerned that I would not be able to find a university that I would truly appreciate. Having toured multiple campuses throughout Texas and almost enrolling in Texas State I was worried I would resort to settling for a university that may not be right for me. My family and I were blessed when my father Alex Bielawski became a full time security officer for DBU. To be clear though, I’m not implying that I’m super-spiritual, nor am I trying to impress anyone by my seating preference. Truth be told, I’m an avid people-watcher and easily allured by my surroundings, so sitting on the front row gives me the best opportunity to pay attention since the only person I can see is the pastor. I can’t tell you the day, month, or even the year when we started attending our church, nor can I tell you exactly how long we’ve sat on that front row now. Several years ago, I went to Pensacola State College, and attempted to register for the Medical Information Coder Biller class, but was unsuccessful. The reason being, I could not provide the college with the proper identification they requested. I am a U.S. citizen born and raised, and I could not understand the process at the time. It took me a while to get my voter’s registration updated, and I did not have a driver’s license. This setback would prevent me from registering for any classes at the college.

Ever since I was younger I was full of wonder, which could be argued that it translated to a love of math and science. As I began to mature this wonder would keep me intrigued in learning an created an excitement for school. I started my education in Houston and am excited to continue it at such a great school like Texas Tech and thanks to this scholarship that will be possible.

Vince Lombardi Jr., the great football coach for whom the Super Bowl trophy was named, said “People who work together will win, whether it be against complex football defenses, or the problems of modern society.” and “The dictionary is the only place that success comes before work. Work is the key to success, and hard work can help you accomplish anything.” I believe these statements are true and hope my legacy at Walton College will show that to be successful one does not have to be the smartest or most talented person, but that success can be achieved through hard work, the ability to collaborate well with others, and being willing to take risks. Wilmington started out as home, then became just a vacation. After years of moving and resisting the pull to move back, I finally made the best and brightest decision I think I have ever made. I am moving home, and in the process, I thought there would be no better place to further my education than The University of North Carolina at Wilmington. I have recently taken a year off in between high school and pursuing my college education, and frankly, I think it has been one of the most humbling experiences of my life. I have learned to appreciate everything that was taught by my parents and the schooling I have received. Before my admission to Houston Community College, I was lost on how to succeed in my courses. However, my admission to this institute exposed me to different courses which educated me on different lessons on how not only to survive in college, but also how to succeed in my classwork. There are two main lessons that I wish to pass on to other students on how they can flourish in their courses.

Sonoma State University was first introduced to me a year ago when I went on a tour of SSU with my school. Twenty of us went on a trip to Northern California to see schools such as University of San Francisco, San Francisco State, Holy Names University, UC Berkeley, and of course, Sonoma State University. I fell in love with SSU the minute I stepped on campus, the campus is so full of trees, unlike the desert-style campuses of many Southern California schools near where I live, and amazing buildings that inspire me by just being around them. When I took a tour of SSU, my tour guide was a part of the Hutchins Program, and she was so passionate when she told my group about it. I had never heard of a program that allowed students to get their degree and teaching credential in 4 years, so after that tour I began to research and tour schools with these kinds of programs, and yet none of them have impacted me quite like the Hutchins Program.

Finding a interesting topic to write about, is challenge on Louisiana College’s campus, but with a little patience and observation, unique stories are scattered amongst the staff and student body. It didn’t take me long to wander into the student center to find a story or interview that would spark my interest. Walking down the hall I approached one of the most important offices on campus. No, it’s not the president’s office, but the Nurse’s office which I’ve seen many times. I had a feeling that this place would be full of stories and experiences that would give me the interview that I needed to boost my grade. I wanted to do an interview about something that I care about and is important to shed light on. I thought about how I often forget one of the most important things in my life, which is health and the people who work to keep us healthy.

In my life, I have had to make made many difficult choices, each with their own consequences, but the most significant choice I made occurred three years ago; I decided to leave my home state of Maine, and enroll in Texas A&M University. This decision has had a major impact on my life, and continues to influence my life today for better and for worse. I've grown to be more independent, but as the same time my debt increases every semester.

I spent a year of college trying to be African. Afrobeats vibrated through the walls of Beets-Veenstra’s first floor dorm. My Christian college had an open-door policy. Walking past the ninth door on the left gave visitors an eyeful of my black hips swaying in circles as if an invisible hula-hoop entangled my waist. I had to get the moves I learned at the parties right. The beats were different from the hip hop music I regularly danced to. They were smooth tempos, but faster than reggae and bodies rocked with more control. My roommate complained about the hours I spent dancing in front of the mirror. We were not flat mates the next the year.
