Personal Narrative: My Personal Teaching Persona

Starting high school can be a little scary, especially when you have no guidance from siblings, like me, being the first one from my family to have an education. But that did not stop me from succeeding, I?ve always been confident and determined. I?m an enthusiastic when it comes to trying new things. Who would have thought I was going to be a good athlete plus a book geek, when in my past years I was just a regular kid. I was pretty excited about joining a club that had a connection with high school, that way I didn?t have to start from zero, I always want to be a step ahead. Fortunately, in summer, a high school coach was recruiting freshmen for running either cross country or track, they both involve running, so I considered it like the same sport with different timing. I seek to join Teach For America because I would not be where I am today if it was not for caring teachers who pushed me into the right direction and validated the idea that I can be a successful student. Growing up my mother and grandmother were both teachers, and hearing their struggles of teaching, I had vowed to never become one. When high school came I was convinced that I was going to join the military and that college was never an option. That was until I met Ms. Mudron, my English teacher who planted a seed in me that grows till this day. I was then able to interview the general teachers, she is a substitute teacher in the classroom covering a maternity leave, and was recently graduated from college. As I mentioned before there is no special education teacher in the classroom. I was able to ask her several questions and to my understanding most of the help she get is from the school team support, she said there is always someone around to answer any of her questions and doubts about the students who have an IEP. She has learned to use a lot of verbal prompt with those students, to maintained order among the students she said she remind them about the classroom rules. The fifth student learning objective assures that we will be able to function well in a multi- disciplinary team. I took Engineering 100 course in my past where I was required to work in a group of students of different majors. Our group had to design and build a hovercraft for the entire semester and the hovercraft project was divided into several parts which was excessively affective to perform the goal of our project. However, our team was able to help each other out when it came to the different aspects of designing the hovercraft by having a multi-disciplinary team. For instance, we were able to rely on the computer science teammate for the programming of the hovercraft while my team was able to rely on me when it came to the financial

If I could say who I am as a learner, I would say that I am a risk-taker, and am very knowledgeable. I like this because I am not afraid to try new things, but I still know what I am doing. If you don’t be a risk taker and try new things, you can never learn anything. These are two very good traits to have, but I still have goals. I want to be more reflective and look back on my mistakes so I can learn better. My goals for behavior are to talk less and get more work done. The best way for me to work is to get a lot done and then take a lot of little breaks, sometimes I get carried away and start to talk and it gets crazy. I learned about this trait when I was a lot younger when I would clean my room. I would get distracted and start playing around, and then I would stop and clean really fast so I could take a little break again. I think this is a result of what type of learner I am. With the mid-semester already here, my mentor and I have fit into a routine where he expects our time together. Jason has seemed to have ease with excitement and is accustomed to having me as a mentor now. However, I feel as though since now he knows what days I mentor for him, this has caused some issues, as well as perks between us working together. I feel that I have been now doing this long enough to experience the best of both worlds when it comes to enjoying time with your mentee, as well as experiencing quite difficult moments and situations while mentoring. The class I am tutoring is a 3rd grade classroom at Palmers Elementary. Mrs Keri Shivle is the teacher of the classroom. I tutor Tuesday from 12:30 to 1:30pm. The times i'm in the classroom the students are always reading or doing an language art activity. The times i have been in the classroom i been working with three students. One is Jakiey and Lavonta and sometimes i work with Angeli. I do different things with them such as helping them with homework or reading to them and then having them read it back to me. We also play games such as vocabulary ones, phonics.

During the senior high school period, I joined the circle teaching program. Circle teaching program is a volunteer program working to help and teach children from remote poor areas in Guizhou, China, where lacking professional teachers and education facilities. We faced a lot of problems while establishing this program, but I am the person who is ready to help others when people need help.

As you will note on my enclosed resume, I hold a B.A. degree in the area of English as well as a M.A. degree in Educational Leadership with a focus on Administration and Supervision. Although the greater portion of my experience has been in the area of classroom teaching rather than administrative duties, my formal evaluations have often noted my strengths in creative thinking, problem solving, strong long-range planning, and the ability to communicate with a diverse population. I believe these strengths in addition to my various leadership responsibilities while teaching create a body of comprehension that would be well-suited for the administrative intern position. I have 8 years wide teaching experience as a instructor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice (CUNY), Fashion Institute of Technology (SUNY) and as both a graduate student lecturer and a teaching assistant at The city college (CUNY). I am fully experienced with many styles of classroom instruction including the use of workshops and peer mentors, graphing calculators and symbolic algebra packages such as Mathematica, Maple and Math Lab.

When I was a kid, grandpa would tell me that an education is the key to success. He would say that the day at which you stop learning is the day at which you pass away. I have pondered this statement over the years and I have to say he was right. I am looking to pursue a Master of Education in Adult and Lifelong learning to help better educate my clientele. Instead of teaching in the classroom right out of college, I went the route of research agriculture. What I found was that even in research agriculture I was teaching. Then I changed jobs to a Field Service Representative and I found I was still teaching farmers new ways to manage the new to Arkansas crop: edamame. My time at Wheeler has taught me mant lesson. I have learned lessons that helped me with my academics. I also learned extremely priceless life lessons, such as the importance of setting goals. When I was in third grade i wanted to have an objective for my remaining years at Wheeler. I decided that my goal was going to be to become a productive student. I wanted to get better grades and be involved in school activites when i had the chance. In fourth grade i came in with a negative adittude thinking i could never accomplish my goal. However with the support of my friends and fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Greco I managed to get better grades and stay focused on my goal. I was a completley different person. Every day I wake up knowing I’m going to have to fight the same war within myself that I do everyday. A war that isn’t visible to the eye, nevertheless a war I never feel I will be free from. It is a humiliating feeling to be fearful of your mind as if you are its prisoner. There are days where I will do anything just to survive. Anxiety has become a sickness that I can’t shake. The way I was brought up plays a significant role in developing a personality derived from perfectionism as well as fearing any sort of failure, due to developing an anxiety disorder. Anxiety has clouded my sense of “who I am,” as well as, affected me physically and cognitively.

I remember feeling perplexed as early as the second grade as to why my desk always had to be in the back of the classroom, why my knees always hit the bottom of its cold, metal frame, and why it was always my job to get the class notebooks from the top shelf of the bookcase. Still, to this day, I do not remember ever signing up for the position of classroom assistant nor do I remember an election taking place, it was simply my allotted task. I also never understood why the cute outfits from Zellers and Old Navy never fit me. Was it really that hard to make longer clothes? Dresses magically transformed into shirts, pants into shorts, and skirts, well that was just out of the question.

There are times, in an educator’s span of lesson plans, where a great idea just does not work out as you plan it in your head. This was one of those times. I have been conducting my field experience for the ECE program I am enrolled in, at Merryhill School. Now I knew Merryhill created their own curriculum. I had no idea that they would ever say no to an inspiring student teacher wanting to teach a fun lesson. However, they did not say no, they just ignored me and did not respond to any inquiries. So by the good gracious of Ms. Ramsey, our instructor for ECE240: Nature, Numbers, and Technology, I was able to teach my lesson with my church’s youth group. A class on Wednesday evenings, made up of 3 three year olds, 2 five year olds, and a six year old, six children in total. Before I even set up for the lesson, I spoke to the parents of the youth group, before prior to the lesson. Each parent
