Personal Narrative: My Immigrant Family

I come from an immigrant family and I have had the privilege to be exposed to different social, cultural and economic realities all my life as I constantly navigated across cultures. Aside from family origin in Ecuador, I was born in Virginia and lived in the Caribbean (Puerto Rico) for six years. The biggest influences on the way I see life comes from my immigrant parents. I have learned to perceive their differences and appreciate their interactions with me. For the last 17 years my father has worked with nonprofits to bring education to refugee camps in the most forgotten places on earth. He goes where the most basic services that we take for granted are lacking. All his efforts are made under the premise that education is the most liberating assistance of all. This early awareness of the abysmal inequalities that exist in the world has profoundly influenced my character and worldview. One day, I discovered that our ESOL department was short of bilingual resources. Since then I dedicated a few hours every week after school to help students who recently arrived in the country. I helped them navigate the school while helping them improve their grades in math and English. In a similar fashion, I tutored at an at-risk youth program called “Alternative House” that provides afternoon programs for kids to prevent them from dropping-out of school or joining juvenile street gangs. I remember that despite my Latino identity, it took ample time and understanding to gain the student’s trust.
