I am passionate on helping people and making changes in others’ lives. Like I stated before, my mother had been trapped herself in the apologetic emotion for years. The mental burden had made her down. Therefore, I decided to help my mother get rid of the self-accusation, by using the knowledge I learned in the Human Services major. To illustrate, I was telling her that it was not her fault of divorce, and she was not showing me the negative image of a marriage. Instead, I admire her braveness of ending a marriage when it was necessary, especially in the time when people were stereotyping divorced women and at the place where people were being judgmental. Now, her self-blameless has been reduced, and she told me that she was not felt as guilty
The concept of health is beyond the absence of illness; there are multiple determinants of health evident in the Institute of Medicine’s model of health (See Fig. 1) (Crosby, Quinn, & Kalinyak, 2015). According to the model health is influenced by the individual’s biological traits such as age, sex, race and biological factors, and social networks, culture and living, working and environmental conditions. In a nutshell, health is determined and influenced by the combination of physical, psychological, and social factors over an individual’s lifespan as displayed in the biopsychosocial multidisciplinary model (See Fig. 2). Firstly, physical health or allostasis refers to the maintenance of physiological homoeostasis in changing circumstances

I also have an extensive training in working with local agencies. The spring semester of my sophomore year, I began volunteering at the Cedar Valley Hospice for approximately 20 hours a month. I was trained in the following areas: Patient/Family, Grief, and Cedar AIDS Support System (CASS) services. Through my work at the CASS, I was responsible for making contacts with a variety of other agencies on the behalf of my clients, such as the Black Hawk County Health Department, Operation Threshold, and the Cedar Valley NAMES Project. In this capacity, I did office work, I was a buddy to an HIV positive individual, and I did face-to-face education panels in local school and community settings. I was also extensively involved in training future buddies. It was during this time period that I completed the American Red Cross course work for certification as an HIV/AIDS educator. In this capacity, I have been a guest speaker in several elementary school and college courses about HIV/AIDS. The
To say it’s been a rough span of years for the state and local governments would be an understatement during this recession. From 2008 to present day all states have struggled to balance their budget and not run a deficit. Throughout American history, this is said to be the worst recession since 1947 after World War II. Revenues fell substantially and unemployment went into the double digits. Throughout this struggle we’ve seen cuts in education, public services, increases in taxes and spending cuts. This recession has affected businesses and residence raging from young to elderly. The federal government has stepped in to help by providing the American Recover and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) but this eventually will spiral down to its finish
