Through my academic years of highschool I wasn't allowed to participant in many activities due, to the fact that I had family obligations to serve and it meant I had to work in my uncle's owned restaurant, everyday after school and return home in the later hours of the night to complete my assignments due tomorrow, and this prevented me to enjoy the the many activities my friends were involved in. Though, I had worked many countless hours in the restaurant, there had been times where I was able to escape from the my reality and participate in very short and unconstant activities, for instance intramural basketball, where teams were formed to compete in every so often, to compete in a basketball game, and also, Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) where each individuals were tested for their personal knowledge of a topic relating to the business spectrum, and participants could compete in team events against other schools and their groups. …show more content…
Day Of Service and this meant going from street to street in our neighborhood and cleaning the environment in the area and making it a safer surrounding for others, and other similar community events like other clean ups which were held every fall and spring time in
One activity that I had major interest in was basketball, although if they did include me I would stay back, because there were times I would not go just to work on it and get better. Just playing basketball in my free time is what made me “different”, and I would not get invited to things because they felt like I did not need to be around
I have been involved in many activities through my high school years. I ran cross country for 4 years then became a manager, which means I still ran at practice but at meets I helped the coaches with various things. I’ve been playing softball since I was 5 and have always loved it. From fifth to twelfth grade I have been on student council and working to make our school a better place. This year I became the vice president of National Honor Society. Getting to work with the community and helping with NHS has changed my life.
It was a part of Alternative Spring Break Program’s Active Citizen Week, which is a week of events that encourage students to do more in the community.
The only extracurricular activities that I participated in was speech and debate and volleyball.. It wasn’t until I became adamant about speech and debate that my activism within the community increased exponentially. Along with discussing the upcoming topics and potential events, my team began discussing the major issues with our community and within our school, this then led to us attempting to solve all of these problems. These issues on campus were never really apparent to me until my senior captains and members had mentioned them. This immediately revealed all of the flaws at El Dorado High School and all of the problems I wished to fix.. After hours and hours of intellectual conversation and debate about the potential solutions, I wanted nothing more than to solve the problems. Since the 2012-2013 school year, I felt that I needed to get involved not only within my community but within my school as well. This decision led me to join ASB, Key Club, and Interact Club. The second and equally as important impact debate has made on my social life is that it expunged the shyness and lack of confidence from me. With debate, one does not have the option of being shy and they do not have the ability to act timid, if I had stayed in my shell, I would not have been nearly as successful as I am now. Being forced to speaking front of a large crowd has helped
When students participate in extracurricular activities they learn lessons and concepts of leadership, teamwork, organization, analytical thinking, problem solving, and time management. In high school if a student wants to do a sport or other activity they will pick the activity that they like and enjoy. This is the kind of decision making skill that could help determine the type of career path for a student. By participating in extracurricular activities youth can find something they enjoy learn to use this in a career. “Participating in certain extracurricular activities having to do with the field that the student is interested in could help them find a job. If someone is looking at a resume for a potential employee, and they see they have experience or interest in what they are looking for, they will be more likely to hire that person” (Massoni). Having been apart of a particular extracurricular activity can be a positive influence in a job resume. This will cause students to find a new ambition in a career. Even on college applications these activities will affect if a student will be accepted, and in some circumstances many activities can earn a student thousands of dollars in scholarships (Massoni). Extracurricular activities can benefit students in teaching them long term commitments. When youth participate in
I believe that leaders must accept the crucibles and acid test so that they can identify their value, and accomplish their great dream and tough missions. As the author of the “Crucibles of leadership” mentioned that leaders should equip with the following essential skills, namely, “engage others in shared meaning, a distinctive, compelling voice, integrity, and adaptive capacity.1 We know how these essentials important, however, we don’t understand how to obtain these elements as well as how to employ them, because the overconfidence always blind us. Thus, people who desire to become the leaders need to go through the crucible test.
My variety of well rounded activities underscore my personality and character. Choir, musical acting, cross country, track and field, chess club, National Honor Society (NHS), and Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). I participate in cross country and track and field not only because I like running, but also because it builds character. It creates a noticeable difference between those who are disciplined, and those who aren’t, between who works hard, and who decides to slack, and between the leaders and the followers. Every day I commit myself to being disciplined, working hard, and leading the team. Though cross country and track are the largest extracurricular activities I am involved in, choir, NHS, and FCA fall close behind. Choir allows me to create beautiful music, not just listen to the songs on the radio, and also allows me to fall in love with the chords, the notes, and the rhythms that are composed within it. NHS pushes me to keep using my intelligence to the best of my abilities, and when partnered with discipline, elevates my grades. FCA allows me to lead and show others that I am a believer in God, for He is the center of my life. Finally, chess club pushes my strategizing abilities, while always having a near infinite number of moves that can be conducted. Though each extracurricular
Education is the one social location that I’m most involved with. I spend most of my time in class at R-S Central, but I also take many classes through ICC. When I am not at school, or doing homework I still participate in things that have to do with my education. I am in educational clubs, including HOSA (Health Occupation Students of America), BETA, and the National Honor Society. These clubs focus on enhancing my education and helping me to continue learning. Only being in high school limits me to the amount of things I can do outside of school and extracurricular activities at school because I don’t have the higher education that I need to work the job I want so my education definitely limits me in my social location.
In class we watched a video over a very opinionated male who explained the reason why America is not great. I have a lot of respect for this man and I think that he brought up some extremely valid points that I have never thought about. What I mainly want to touch on is the fact that he accused my generation of being apathetic. He basic says that we could care less and are lazy good for nothings. The best response I can think of is, look at who raised us. Now, I am not saying that it is entirely our parents fault or their parents fault for the reason why teenagers do not care about school, grades, or the world. I am just saying that it is unfair to put the entire blame on my generation saying that we are the reason why the America is not great. He makes it seem that as soon as my
When I was at the very innocent age of three, my parents decided to immigrate to the United States from Bolivia. We moved to Pasadena, TX, in hopes of pursuing the American dream. Growing up, my neighborhood was not the best environment to raise a family, however, this environment shaped me into the person I am today. My parents initially made the decision to move because my father got a job offer that was too good to decline. We were promised a house in a nice neighborhood as well as jobs for both of my parents. When we arrived after a 13-hour flight, all of the promises along with our hopes were shattered. We were taken to lower-income apartments in the middle of a sketchy neighborhood. My father’s promised job was on the night shift as a
A simple cracking sound sent me plummeting to the cold hard ground breathless. The flashing lights illuminated not only an arena of dancing teenagers, but it exposed a world where no one cared. I lie restless while cradling my knee, trying to muster up enough oxygen to yell for help over the blaring beat. The crack in my knee shattered my perception and split my world in half.
When I began high school, I started off thinking that extracurricular activities such as student government were a waste of my time. As I continued to attend Walden III I saw myself growing as a person, and began to take an active interest in
The first time I heard about Business Professionals of America (BPA), I was in 10th grade, I thought I definitely did not belong in that organization, first of all because I was not Professional and secondly because I did not know about business. I had a persistent friend that finally convinced me to join and at first I thought it was a waste of time since I did not know anyone at first. Now as I look back I am glad I joined because BPA has changed my life greatly. I have become more responsible and overall I have become a leader.
As a firm believer that one should joins or participates in some activities outside of his or her classroom, for it’s going to extend his or her experience greatly, I have always followed this belief since I can remember things properly too. Firstly, my most beloved and fascinating activity is playing Thai music, which I’ve joined into a band since my very first day I set my first step in Assumption College. Even thought my school isn’t so outstanding in Thai music, in fact, not good at it at all, but I still enjoy playing within my school’s band anyway; we, the entire band’s members, are all like brothers to each other—we learn and practice, not because we want to compete with each other or win any competitions, but just because we love to
Participation can make someone feel more fulfilled in life and can increase their self-esteem by making them feel more capable in the act of doing (Law, 2002, p. 640). In general, participation in extracurricular activities outside of work or school increases quality of life for both children and adults. When children participate in sports or clubs, their risk of smoking, low self-esteem and having difficulty making friends decreases. Adults that volunteer or participate in recreational activities are proven by research to live longer and have higher quality of life. (Law, 2002, p. 641) Speaking from experience, as a freshman in college during my undergrad, all I did was study – I didn’t attempt to make friends or participate in any organizations. As one can image, I can’t say I was experiencing a high quality of life because I needed to be engaging in activities with
