My heart was pounding in my ears and a part of my mind wondered if everyone else could hear it in the dead silence of the ballroom. I stood in the middle of the stage with every light beaming down and every eye in the room was on me as I stood in the top two on the Miss Teen USA stage. I was sure the cameras were catching everything. All of my hard work and dedication were paying off in this moment. I stood there clutching Miss California Teen’s hand as she tightly clutched mine. I had dreamed about this moment, like so many little girls but I never expected it to really happen. Strangely, I had more sense of peace than nervousness or fear. I knew my life was about to change. My heart dropped as the emcees screamed my name as the winner. The beautiful crown was placed on my head, warm tears ran …show more content…
I could possibly be crowned Miss Teen USA 2015. There I was standing in the top five as 4th alternate, 3rd alternate and 2nd alternate were announced, but my name was never called. The hot stage lights were beaming down on Miss California Teen USA and I as we stood in the top two. One of our lives were about to change. The audience was mute while they waited on the edge of their seats to see who would be called as the winner. In that moment my heart was pounding, I looked into the audience and took the deepest breath. I did not know what to think or feel but it just happened. “The winner of Miss Teen USA 2015 is...Louisiana!” the emcees screamed. Suddenly, the crown was placed on my head, and I took my first walk as Miss Teen USA. Everyone in the audience were on their feet smiling and clapping as I took my first walk. I searched for my parents in the crowd and immediately made eye contact. My mother was crying and my father was standing with the biggest smile on his face. My only thought was, “this moment is so surreal.” In that second, my life changed forever. I was thrown into the public eye and was already a role model to thousands throughout the
"Not a single day goes by without working toward my dream of being the next Miss California USA. The first preliminary competition is less than a month away! As I compete for the title of Miss Santa Monica, I know I have so many generous supporters who have believed in me for many years. I owe everything to the people who make it possible to compete in the USA
After competing at Miss Texas multiple times, she returned to the Miss Texas stage in early September of 2014 and was crowned to represent the state of Texas at Miss. USA. As the hosts began calling the runners up essentially eliminating them Ylianna started to feel like she was dreaming. Soon enough she was holding hands with Allie Gonzales another valley native and we were the last two standing. When they called Allie as first runner up and Ylianna as the winner, she could not believe it. Winning this title had been a goal and a dream of hers ever since she started competing, finally winning after being defeated twice was one of Ylianna’s proudest moments because she felt like her hard work had finally paid off.
I hope you will remember when we met in California, I was visiting Becky Palacios in Glendale. I heard Jackie Porter is working at the Texas Education Agency, recently named the Early Childhood Executive Director. I applied at TEA, hoping for the manager's position in the Early Childhood Department. Jackie and I met while working at Pearson Publishers, with Gloria Horner, the Texas Manager, nevertheless, I don't think if it's appropriate for an applicant to communicate with her. Recently my husband, works for AARP in San Antonio, had a change in his job position, which means he might be working out of Austin again. If an occasion arises, you happen to see or talk to Jackie, I would appreciate a kind word regarding my interest.
A study was conducted in Israel, published October of 2013, that studied the reactions of pediatricians when parents refused to immunize their children. Anonymous survey was sent out across the country to any pediatrician or doctor that worked with children that wanted to complete the questionnaire. While the anonymous survey has a pro of allowing for truthful answers from participants afraid to voice their true opinions to the public, one could also argue that this survey method is a con because the authenticity cannot be traced back to any one individual survey participant. The purpose of this research was to discover what pediatricians believed to be the best-practice approach of immunizations by gauging their responses to parents that refuse to have their children vaccinated.
Life is a never ending sequence of problems. Every person has to learn to overcome them throughout his or her life to better themselves. In the story, I Want to be Miss America, by Julia Alvarez, she tells the story of how she and her sisters adapted to American style and culture. Her family came from the Dominican Republic. At a young age, they watched the Miss America Beauty Pageant, which show portrayed the ideal woman. So, the sisters changed their looks to appear like the women on the show. It was not until the 1960’s that their previous Dominican style, became the new trend in America. In the story, A Choice of Weapons, by Gordon Parks, talks about when he was a journalist/photographer going to Washington D.C. for a job at a local newspaper.
This ceremony is when everyone is able to find out if they if they are a Top Ten or Top Three Qualifier for their specific competitive event. This process is done by displaying the Top nine thousand people at the conference. Finally, once all the qualifiers are on stage, the Top Three Qualifiers are awarded with their medals and everyone exits. I was feeling nervous at the beginning of the ceremony. This feeling grew stronger but before I knew it, it was time for Medical Photography to be announced. Before my eyes could even reach the bottom of the list my friends were jumping up and down and cheering for me! My name was on the Top Ten Qualifier List! I quickly gave my friends a hug and rushed to the stage. I waited in line with the rest of the qualifiers before we all could enter the stage. While we waited I could feel my heart racing as I thought about how many people I was about to stand in front of. I was so scared I was going to trip! Someone who looked very official came around to each of us to fix our hair and our blazers. As we entered the stage I felt the bright, hot lights flash us as the Top Three Qualifiers were announced. I was not in the top three so I exited the stage where I received a certificate and a
The Film The Searchers by John Ford tells an emotionally complex story of hate-ridden quest and also explores the themes of racial prejudice. It gives you a first-hand look of the origin and meaning of Racial Hatred and Ethan and Scar are used to portray and symbolize that. Ethan also harbors a bitter hatred of Indians (though he knows their lore and language well). Ethan’s racism and fear of miscegenation manifest themselves so often that a couple of examples of him at his most vindictive should do: Firstly, when he shoots the eyes out of the dead Indian, eternally damning him to ‘wander forever between the winds’. Secondly, when he shoots at an enormous herd of buffalo, figuring that ‘Killin’ buffalo’s as good as killin’ Injuns in this country’.
There were five female contestants that participated in the running for Miss Essence. Each of them were African American but varied in age, their childhood upbringing, and major in college. I was very excited to attend this event. Prior to attending the pageant, I asked a few different African American classmates if they had participated or observed the pageant themselves. I learned that one of my classmates had participated in the pageant and won the award of Miss Congeniality.
The 2016 Miss America Contest allowed fifty two women to compete for the honor of being crowned as the most tantalizingly beautiful woman in America. However, unlike previous years this pageant featured a contestant who exemplifies compassion and intelligence on and off of the stage in addition to being physically stunning. She galvanized a social movement that brought awareness to a profession within our nation that has been misinterpreted and underappreciated by the public for decades. Kelly Johnson, Miss Colorado, stood in front of millions of viewers during the televised talent portion of the contest wearing navy blue scrubs, and a stethoscope draped around her neck. Johnson waved to the cheering audience, and began her monologue with:
The night was packed with many surprises, but only one girl walked away with the crown and sash at the 9th Miss Blythe Outstanding Teen Pageant on Saturday, March 4.
Growing up in Southern California, I was surrounded by coastal culture, which has influenced me in many ways. No matter whether I lived in San Diego or Ventura county, I was never more than ten minutes away from the beach. Every weekend, it seemed, my dad would take us to the beach as family so we could play in the water, build sandcastles, catch hermit crabs, see the tide pools, and most of all, spend time together. I was enchanted by all the beach had to offer. Every sandcastle built was a palace for a hermit crab and every tide pool a thriving community. Whenever I stepped into the water, my imagination would run wild. Despite how often we went, I always enjoyed our days at the beach.
Oakland, California, the city that people consider as one of the top five most dangerous cities in the United States. Growing up in the city next to it and having family there, I developed strong bonds to Oakland. I have always seen Oakland in the light for being outrageously diverse and being resilient. My first thoughts of Oakland never consisted of them of the city being dangerous or a bad place to live in. I knew that Oakland is dangerous but I have never experienced anything that made my outlook change. Despite a handful of my family living there and have experienced muggings, robbery and dealing of drugs, I still could not take in how unsafe Oakland is. However, just one incident changed my view of this city, 18 years of my life Oakland
In the story, “How I Lost the Junior Miss Pageant” by Cindy Bosley, the narrator tells her story about how she lost the Junior Miss Pageant. She takes us on a journey about how she watched pageants and rated the females as if she was the judge and how she got into the pageant and practiced. She told us about her and her mother’s struggles with money, men and ultimately how she lost the pageant. She went even further after the pageant was over, to tell the reader how disappointed her mother was because she did not win and her mother’s ultimate sorrow, her loneliness. This descriptive narrative allowed me to understand the text's main point: being accepted by others.
Of course I was joyous for her accomplishment, but that meant that I hadn’t won. After the hours of work that went into my entry, the fact that I lost my first contest was a massive dissatisfaction. I felt that I had no talent and that maybe my friends were becoming better and I was leveling off with my talent; I felt that I should give up on art. This few days of disappointment were far from easy, but after my grief came a spark of light. I realized that one contest shouldn’t determine the sum of talent I have, and that just sitting around wouldn’t get me anywhere. It became time for me to stop sulking and start making art again, but this time with motivation and persistence. After this moment, I became happy with my art and built up the courage to enter another contest. This time I had unexpectedly won, and my lucky streak has continued. With commitment came my best work, and it was all because I faced and defeated my worst fear, losing the talent that I most loved. From a time we are brought into hopeless darkness, we can learn to brighten up and shine our way out with our best
Anyone that is well situated into the world of literature knows of the literacy genius Edgar Allen Poe. Most of Poe’s works do not have the slightest bit of joy or happiness in them. His literature mainly consists of a dark and gothic mood; mostly due to the fact that his actual life was worse than his stories. For those who have read a few of his stories or poems you might notice a similarity in plot. In his works“ The Cask of Amontillado,” “ The Black Cat,” and “ The Tell-Tale Heart,” there is clear similarity of plot between the three stories.
