The night was packed with many surprises, but only one girl walked away with the crown and sash at the 9th Miss Blythe Outstanding Teen Pageant on Saturday, March 4.
Announcing the winner by 7 p.m., Marie Smith sunk to the floor in happy tears, as she was crowned by former Outstanding Teen Tayler Elms and sashed by reigning Miss Blythe Jasmine Gima.
Competing alongside five other contestants, Saturday night was bittersweet for all who had the pleasure to meet Elms and bid her farewell in her future endeavors.
Hosted by Miss California 2015 Bree Morse, the audience was swept back to 1978, as the contestants, Mr. Blythe Payton Cox, Elms and Gima took the stage for a “Grease” performance.

As part of the judging criteria, the five notable panel of judges scored 15 percent for lifestyle and physical fitness, 25 for interview, 25 percent for evening wear and onstage question and 35 percent on talent. To receive high scores, the young ladies had to execute a highly confident onstage presence, display great skill and personality in their talent through body use and choreography and walk with grace and correct posture. There to show them how it’s done, Elms performed one last time and Gima took the stage for a vocal performance. Hoping to one day shine on the big stage and join in the big girl competition, nine princesses were crowned shortly after intermission by Elms and Gima, as well as 2016 Miss California Princess Carly Smith. In 2008-2009 brittany Anstead was the junior princess, and in 2009-2010 Morgan Copland was the junior princess this was during Rev. Ron Richardson was chief. In 2014-2015 the tiny miss was Adriana Ann Milio, age 4, the little miss was Layla Shanelle Lynch, age 8, and the junior miss was Amya Renea Mills, age 11. After competing at Miss Texas multiple times, she returned to the Miss Texas stage in early September of 2014 and was crowned to represent the state of Texas at Miss. USA. As the hosts began calling the runners up essentially eliminating them Ylianna started to feel like she was dreaming. Soon enough she was holding hands with Allie Gonzales another valley native and we were the last two standing. When they called Allie as first runner up and Ylianna as the winner, she could not believe it. Winning this title had been a goal and a dream of hers ever since she started competing, finally winning after being defeated twice was one of Ylianna’s proudest moments because she felt like her hard work had finally paid off.

Miss America is a yearly pageant that goes on for any girl between the age of 17 to 24. There is a lot of people that enter this every year. Six beautiful and wonderful women have won from Oklahoma. Their life was so amazing when they found out they have won, some of them didn’t even know what to do. There is so much stuff they have to go through to get to enter in the pageant. After they do enter they are very busy with everything trying get to get ready for the big day. Miss America is a pageant that has been going on since 1921. It is something that some girls look forward to for when they are in High School or just got out of High School.

The hosts for that night were Emily Brian and Kaitlyn Satterlund. Your contestants involved in the show involved Joseph Herrera, Dane Wagner, Taliesin Robertson, Tate Holmes, Austin Schweyen, Eric Voellger, Ryan Engledow, Donnie Hofstrand, Pattrick Oxile and Jerimyah Ridao. A list of events that were judged included a question portion and, spirit wear, and their special talent. Contestants were brought out with the women who is most important to them in their life. Being an actress is great and all, but since then, I’ve been treated like I already am queen. I had doubts about entering the first Selection, but my mom assured me the “lottery” was a joke. I wasn’t shocked when I won, though, although I did think if all the Selected were handpicked, they would be lower castes to please five through eights. I guess since this is the first try, they actually picked a few decent girls.

The night started as the best homecoming game of my life. Getting crowned with my boyfriend, Tate, in front of the whole school was exhilarating. Watching him play on the field was an incredible experience too. Hearing the announcers echoing voice annouce, “Violet Harmon and Tate Langdon, Senior Homecoming King and Queen 2017!” was the highlight of my night. Obviously, I was not surprised that I won, since I have won every year.

Most child beauty pageant founders are not concerned with teaching their participants life lessons or getting them to feel confident in their own skin. As a matter of fact, most child beauty pageants encourage the harmful effects. It is hard enough growing up in this world with the advancing technology, various forms of bullying and learning to be comfortable in your own skin. Beauty pageants focus mainly on imagery and how the participants’ body is creatively presented. A good child beauty pageant that strives to teach their participants confidence, self-worth and life lessons that will help them succeed
