I'd like to share an example from my personal experience that illustrates nursing as an art. While working as a nursing assistant there was a patient who had just been newly admitted into the nursing home. This was his first time being a resident in a rehabilitation facility so he was very hesitant and scared. During his first day, he refused to let me take his vital signs. However, I noticed the uneasy look on his face and decided to talk to him further and discuss his fears. He explained to me that he'd gotten his blood drawn several times that day and didn't want to be stuck anymore. After getting an understanding of how he felt I was able to address his concerns and explain that there no needles involved in obtaining his vital signs.
The career I researched about is a Nursing Assistant. Nursing Assistants help patients with the daily things we do as individuals to help ourselves. The personal qualities and abilities within this job is getting the special things the patient needs in order to be healthy, such as grooming the patient, brushing the teeth of the patient, observing them, helping patients walk, making their beds, and they helping with the bowel and bladder problems for their care. In the United states it is required for Health care facilities to have Nursing Assistants. The educational requirements for a Nursing Assistant is to have a CNA credential and also a state registration. Nursing Assistants need to take programs such as a certificate program in nursing assistance. Usually you may go to a community college to have the proper education needed for the job or you may go to a university. The certificate program to become a nursing assistant takes about 18 weeks or a whole semester. Lastly they need to
The career I became interested in is a Physician’s Assistant, or a few people call them PAs. I became interested in this job in my sophomore year of high school. It all started when I attended the STEM fair after school one day. STEM fair is only offered to students who are in either the biomedical Stem academy or the engineer academy. At this fair, students tour around to different classrooms to acquire information on different careers. I attended the Physician’s Assistant one, where there was an actual PA to give information on what PAs achieve. For example, PAs examine patients for diseases, injuries and illnesses.
According to the U.S Census Bureau, Population Estimates and Projections, the nation’s elderly population aged over 65 is expected to increase from 46.2 million in 2014 to 98.2 million in 2060 (Colby and Ortman, 2015). When the number of elderly persons increases, there will be more long-term care residents (Fox-Rose, 2000). This increase will require many caregivers in long term care facilities (Tak, Sweeney, Alterman, Baron, & Calvert, 2010). Between 2010 and 2020, the employment of nursing aides is expected to grow by 20%. This increase is larger than the average (14%) for all occupations (U.S Department of Labor [USDOL], Bureau of Labor Statistics [BLS], Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2012).
During the course of my college years, I have considered alternate career options. I have contemplated becoming a physician’s assistant, a dentist, or a podiatrist. Physician’s assistants and doctors play similar roles in clinics; I would still be able to see patients and enjoy the interpersonal aspect of delivering healthcare. Additionally, I would still be able to play an important role in primary care and do my utmost for the sake of my patients, which is hugely appealing.
Last weekend was the most exasperating weekend I have worked in a long time. This weekend is my first anniversary, I did not want to work. I wanted to be home with my family to prepare for the celebration. I have an exam on Monday, needed to read about five books, the nurse told me I needed to read up on pleasantry tactics. My priorities are to make sure that I accomplish all of my motherly, wifely duties and fulfilling my duties as a Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA). I have been at the job for 12 hours now, due someone had called off I am ready to go I have a lot of planning to do and not enough time to accomplish what needs to be done before the weekend.
My mother received a high school diploma and was not able to attend college due to the fact that my grandparents needed help financially. She had to take on various responsibilities at a young age and could not afford a college education. My mother then decided to go back to school years after she gave birth to me and enrolled in a medical program where she would later become a Certified Nursing Assistant. My mother’s strong motivation and determination enabled her to make something of herself. Her perseverance motivated me to aim high for my goals and succeed. Although she had obtained a job, she still does not have the financial means to send me to college. Therefore, receiving a scholarship or any type of grant whether it is twenty dollars
Volunteer work has always been a prominent activity that occurred within my life. Growing up with a father that was involved in the community so much that it felt like it was his job, I was always surrounded by community service and helping others. At the young age of six years old, I decided to do my part as well, feeding the homeless in a local church in New Bedford, Massachusetts. From that year on, I believe a majority of my most valuable characteristics derived directly from my volunteer work. Now, almost thirteen years later, I am involved in over 100 hours of community service per year and am ready to apply it into a new field- as a Resident Assistant.
In this article a young, certified nursing assistant failed to follow the guidelines in properly transporting the resident into her bed. Sadly, the resident ended up falling and receiving bruises, and black eyes due to the negligence of the nursing assistant. Rather than getting the resident help right away she asked a coworker to lie for her and say she had helped her, in order to keep her out of trouble. The co-worker didn’t follow through with the lie and the nursing assistant ended up losing her job and is facing charges of a class e felony, and a misdemeanor, also losing her certification. Griffith, G. (2015, June 3rd) Nursing home aide arrested, arraigned for allegedly neglecting elderly resident.
Today was tedious. I was assigned two patients to do a chart review of. I did not write down some key diagnosis because I thought it was not important. The most difficult part of this task for me was figuring out which information is important for the evaluation. We went to see our patients for the day. The highlight of my day was seeing a patient who already knew what occupational therapist does. She was the first patient who knew what occupational therapist does, and she gave a short and straight to the point definition. I was truly impressed. I wrote four evaluations today and I forgot some information that I could not remember or put into words. Goal writing is easier in this setting as oppose to in class. All of the goals were occupation
I was recently fortunate enough to speak with Carri Montgomery, who lists her title as the Director of the Women’s and Newborn Center for Platte Valley SCL Health. Platte valley use to be community owed and they recently joined Sister’s of Charity which includes; Good Samaritan, Lutheran, and Saint Joseph Hospital. The purpose of this interview was to interview someone where I could see myself working in what they are doing later in my career. With this interview I hoped to learn what it took for Ms. Montgomery to be in the position she is today. Also, get advice from her to see what where the things she recommended I could do when I graduate from Metropolitan State University (MSU) in 2019. It was beneficial to interview her
Comforting and helping people before, during, and after a procedure is something that has intrigued me for a while. I’m relatively accustomed to the field of nursing, considering my dad has to go to the doctor for numerous checkups. Most nurse anesthetist work alone, without the supervision of an anesthesiologist, which is one reason why I chose to research this career. Nurse anesthetists, normally called CRNA (certified register nurse anesthetist), are the primary provider of anesthesia in rural America. In some states they are the sole provider of anesthesia. My initial resource for information about my career was the Mississippi Choices website. Next, I searched the Occupational Outlook Handbook website. Then, I conducted
Imagine having two kids with a wide array of physical and mental complications. Raising my brother and I was no easy task. Working as a certified nursing assistant is what my mom does best. My parents separated when I was at the age of three. When my father felt he had too much on his plate, he thought it would be alright if he left; because, honestly he wanted nothing to do with us. When my mom was ready to be married, she did not have an arranged marriage like her sister. My mom has felt miserable her whole life. doing everything; and I mean everything with her mom. There was not one decision she got the opportunity to make for herself. She figured that this was the right thing to do. That she did. She ended up getting married at a small
"BOOM!" "BANG!", went my mom of her feet onto the floor! I ran over to help pick her up off the floor. I got her into the bed and checked for any scrapes or bruises. After I got her all patched up and comfortable I came to realize that the last time this happened she hadn't had her medicine in days. So I proceeded to give her the correct medication and stayed over the next few days to nurse her back to health. Over those few days even at a young age, I realized that the medical field was just for me. I enjoyed doing what I did to help my mom and wanted to continue to help others the same way I helped her.
Choosing my career was not an easy choice but becoming a Medical Assistant would be my “foot in the door” to becoming a nurse. I started Alaska Career College in fall 2014 to become a Phlebotomist. I thought that with my experience as a medical receptionist, I can further my career as a medical assistant rather than a phlebotomist. I love to draw blood but because of my personality, I thought that maybe it would be more beneficial to become a medical assistant instead. As a young Hmong child, I loved helping people especially the older folks who did not speak English well. It is my goal to help others who are in need of help and because of that, I chose to become a Medical Assistant. I do hope that one day
By way of example, the art integrated to the nursing career gives it a true meaning as to caring for a patient based off intuition and skill rather than focusing on the objectivity of science. Nursing becomes a whole rounded definition when incorporating a spiritual well-being and consideration of each patient’s way of life. When realizing that every component to nursing care has room for the unexpected to occur even when there is no scientific explanation as to why. The beauty when you first come into a patient’s room to brighten their day in ways so simple that no medication nor treatment as easy as the right attitude offered by a smile to your patient’s has a greater lasting effect than any medication possible. The art of listening to a patient means the world to those who have gone unheard of through the nursing process. As mentioned by Masters, “ While Henderson defined nursing in functional terms, she emphasized the art of nursing as well as empathetic understanding, stating that the nurse must “get inside the skin of each of her patients in order to know what he needs… the beauty of nursing is a combination of your heart, your head and your hands and where you separate them, you diminish them” ( Masters, 2015, p 38-9).
