I had the privilege of interviewing Jason Hanson, a pastor from Sovereign Grace Church. Exposure of counseling was early for Jason, watching his Dad oversee the high school ministry. Jason has counseled various couples, parents and teens in and out of Sovereign Grace. He sees his job as an opportunity to be invited into peoples lives, to serve them and see where they are in life. Faith in the Lord is the core influence that Jason uses in his counseling and his clients are aware of this at the beginning of every session. Since pastoral counseling is different than clinical counseling, Jason is very careful not to cross ethical boundaries if physician or professional psychiatric help is involved in the clients case. The goal of a session is to find where God is in the situation, to gain different perspectives so the client can discover more "hidden" details of their story. Sessions can vary to client, sometimes it is …show more content…
A good counselor needs to show compassion, wisdom, care and courage. I have personally been counseled by Jason and he shows all of these qualities in the most humbled fashion. Many of his strengths were blossomed because of past mistakes. One of the changes that needed to made during sessions was a time limit, and the sessions needed to be back to back so there would be a consistent time frame between clients. Jason also established certain time frame when it came to listening and his vocal input. At a beginning of the session, the client will be able to talk for 10 minutes with no interruptions. This gives time the client become comfortable with their current environment and to be reassured that Jason is truly listening. For the next 30 minutes, Jason draws his client out, asking question to promote different perspectives. Again, the most important purpose of these sessions is to see where God and scripture fits into the clients
Prior to reading this book I was unclear as to how the counselor could go about introducing spirituality into the counseling relationship. I believe that McMinn provides us with a good foundation on how Christian counselors can guide their clients to rely upon God. One thing that I would like more clarity on is how counselors can integrate spirituality into the counseling relationship when there is a difference in beliefs? If Christian counselors are to lead and guide their clients to God then how do we effectively do that when our beliefs may be different from our clients?
In the coaching discussion it was not said that my conduct was not meeting expectations, but not allow myself to be in situations where it appears I’m being insubordinate.
This is a review of the Hawkins & Clinton book, The New Christian Counselor: A Fresh Biblical and Transformational Approach. While the book in general is quite repetitive, it was more of twelve chapters of a sermon rather than focused on the counseling, but it did have some important points about the importance of Christian counseling throughout the book. Some points that the book makes for the Christian counseling approach include the following: Foundations: Christian counseling builds foundations on the “process of redemption and restoration” (Hawkins & Clinton, 2015, p. 21). Defined: Christian counseling per the book is defined as “a discipleship designed to help free people to experience God’s pardon, purpose and power” (Hawkins & Clinton,
How can a Christian counselor effectively counsel clients while holding to their convictions of faith? This question is one that many have to think upon. In reading the textbook for this class, the author takes the secular theories and breaks them apart. As a counselor, Christian or not, it is very important to pull from different theories rather than devote solely to one theory. Each individual coming in to the therapist’s office is wired differently in personality and belief system. As a Christian therapist, it is important to know the individual in the client’s chair. Being open with them about where one stands spiritually is a priority. The goal is to be able to take any theory and “think” Christianly. Every counselor is different, but there are central characteristics that one must focus their practice on while working with clients. The main goal as a Christian therapist is to integrate psychology, professional ethics, Scripture and the very character of Jesus in a way that never compromises the authority of God.
The authors in this research address the importance competency in preparing counselors-in-training. Young, Cashwell, Wiggins-Frame, and Belaire (2002) suggest that counselor’s educators are much unprepared to incorporate spirituality competencies to counselors-in-training. The article also supports counselor educators are unprepared in applying spirituality in their curriculum. They lack the requirement set by CACREP standards, as well as their colleagues are even less prepared (Young et al.,
school counselors assigned to that specific school. The meeting will address the purpose of the study and the floor will be open to any questions the employees of the school may have regarding the study. This process will continue until the research team has been given permission by 24 high schools (8 in each socioeconomic area) to ask their students to participate in the study.

I believe counseling is a collaborative partnership between client and counselor. Furthermore, this collaborative partnership is built from trust and acceptance of both client and counselor. I hope in conjunction with clients to understand the issues and concerns so to help them tap into their wisdom, creativity, and strengths to meet their current challenges. I believe in a comprehensive perspective through which clients can better comprehend themselves in the framework that our thinking about events can lead to emotional and behavioral upset. Moreover, counselors are to provide a safe environment for clients to explore their challenges and identify ways to move differently in overcoming these challenges.
This essay is an evaluation of two counselling models applied to a situation where a client has experienced loss and how a counsellor can create a therapeutic relationship with the client using each counselling model. It will also contain other skills a counsellor could use to obtain/maintain a good therapeutic relationship with the client.

Patience and acceptance is important to my personal philosophy because I believe counseling beings and ends with both. A goal I have is to enter into a client’s experience with them so I can be there with them every step of the way. Going through this journey will help the client explore their own thoughts and feelings. I entered into the field of counseling because I have compassion and a desire to help people reach and understand their full potential. As a counselor in training, I desire to help clients identify their own problems and concerns along with demonstrating a genuine compassion for the endeavors that they may face.
Clinical Mental Health counseling is a field of great opportunity and great responsibility. When counselees walk into the therapist’s office, they are often at one of the lowest points of their lives, bringing with them a lifetime of hurts, questions, and crises. The counselor’s view of the Gospel must be full enough to encompass the life of the hurting person. In those moments, a counselor will rely on years of hard work and discipline to make decisions that impact a person for life. A counselor must be prepared to do everything right yet still have the client walk away gaining nothing. Biblical counseling requires excellence in mind, personal discipline, and compassion, driven by a desire to glorify God and faith in His grace and sovereignty. There is nothing like Biblical counseling to see the Gospel work.
One focus of biblical counseling is to help others develop a biblical worldview of their life and recognize the core truth that guides right thinking and actions. The goal of biblical counseling is spiritual maturity. True change is the result of the Holy Spirit working in one’s heart. This work often includes intervention by other people such as a pastor, a mentor, or a counselor. The biblical counselor helps people identify their problems in biblical terms that may involve a renaming of the problem, such as, alcoholism versus drunkenness. As this is done, the individual’s view of his or her problem is changed and becomes biblical. This process is filled with grace and is ultimately redemptive. The gospel of Jesus Christ is the foundation for the work of biblical counseling.
I am currently employed by the Department of Defense, U.S. Army, and Information Management Command as an Education Technician. Having to advise and assist Soldiers in person, by phone and by internet seeking continued education using military educational benefits has changed my career interest. I decided to pursue my goal in Counseling. I am interested in completing my Master’s program so I can become more competitive in the Education and Counseling field of study. By completing this degree and advancing my knowledge both academically and professionally I will become more competitive to compete in the career field of counseling while working for the federal government.
