I assume, that whoever received this personal statement, is probably going through another thousand, of other applicant. With that being said, as I was trying to think of ways to stand out from the rest, and brainstorming my biggest achievements to impress you, I coincidently found a quote. David Duchemin once said, “There’s no better teacher than failure” and those words have never sunk in so deeply to me. This quote may not directly illustrate what my biggest achievement is or wow you with a specific talent of mine, but one thing is for certain, this quote demonstrates what is essential in order to carry out a lifelong goal. And that is all college is, right? It’s a lifelong goal to see who has the perseverance to achieve what they want. …show more content…
Throughout many experiences, I have learned that you have to work for what you want and never let obstacles in life define you. Once I heard Duchemin’s quote, it made me come to a realization. My biggest achievement is learning how to manipulate failure into motivating me vs letting it push me back. No matter how many times I have felt defeated, whether it is in schoolwork, or any other aspect in my life, I have always continued pushing forward. When I had a mental block in cheerleading, I continued to remind myself of my goal and how tomorrow was a new day to try again. After a yearlong, of visualizing myself, reaching my goal and doubling up on practices, I finally got over my metal block and reached what I had been striving for. Even when the situation may seem hopeless, perspective is everything and you must learn quickly, to make the best out of the worst. I am not going to lie, moving to Florida for my first year in college was not easy. Leaving behind my friends, teammates, and my school was devastating. But as soon as I decided to change my perspective and persist on tract towards my goal, I felt invincible. I quickly volunteered at West Memorial Hospital, to help myself envision my future career and enrolled myself in many science classes, as a reminder to why I moved to Florida. That reasoning was to start a new chapter in my life as a college student, aspiring to be a
The tenet perseverance applies to my own life out of taekwondo and my taekwondo journey to get my black belt in multiple ways. This tenet helps me in my life and in my journey by helping me to never give up and reach higher goals in life.
My decision to volunteer at Gloucester-Mathews Free Clinic was primarily motivated by curiosity. There are seven medical professionals in my family, and I wanted to explore the possibility of pursuing a similar career path. The experience provided an opportunity to learn that I do not want to go into medicine, but more importantly, it made me reevaluate the way I think of healthcare.
How many times in life have you struggled but got through a difficult time? That is called perseverance. The definition of perseverance is “Steadfastness in doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success.” Synonyms are persistence and determination. It originated from the latin word perseverare. Right now the world has been filled with natural disasters, from hurricanes to wildfires. Everyone that this affected has been forced to persevere through it because there is not much that they have the ability to do besides staying strong. In all of the nonfiction literature we have read there were many different examples of perseverance from many different people. I decided to choose three. For my first example Melba Pattillo Beals from “Warriors Don’t Cry”. There is numerous examples of the Little Rock 9 and her doing something despite difficulty. For the second example of perseverance I chose Maya Angelou. Through her life there were countless times that she was faced adversity and still achieved success. My third example is Earl Simmons (DMX) from the book “E.A.R.L”. He went through a tough time at almost all time growing up and he never gave up and achieved success. Perseverance creates success; therefore, when you stick through something you can accomplish what you want.
The motivation to achieve my goals led me to attend The Ohio State University to obtain my bachelor degree in Biological Sciences. Throughout my college education, I volunteered and held paid positions at various hospitals throughout Columbus. I was always intrigued to learn what it takes to
What experiences (volunteer or paid) contributed to your interest in the field of public health?
I continued serving my junior year at Hillcrest Hospital, where I worked with patient transport. During my service I was able to meet people from all walks of life and hear their stories. These experiences taught me the importance of kindness, service, and empathy. I received the Outstanding Service Award from my school for two years for exceeding
I have never seen the general so despondent I have taken over writing all his correspondence. Congress writes “George, attack the British forces!” I shoot back, we have resorted to eating our horses.
The summer of my freshman year I took a trip back to Ghana, my homeland. While I was there, I worked with some volunteer doctors at a local orphanage. My time was spent playing games with the children, helping then with their homework and just spending time with them. I assisted the doctors with a routine check-up for the children and even held the hand of a little girl while she was getting her shots. It was an enlightening experience that furthered my passion for
Within AMSA, I have had many amazing opportunities to volunteer in the Gainesville Community, to meet peers with similar interests, and to learn about the many great choices I have before me discerning medicine. Firstly, I volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House by cooking dinners and desserts for the people currently residing there. I also volunteered at the 352 Creates Art Festival with the Arts in medicine committee, where I conducted surveys about the people in attendance and stimulated people's interest
Homer’s The Odyssey, an epic poem about the trials of Odysseus on his return journey, demonstrates that perseverance is at the heart of every hero. The ability to endure hardships is not a quality that is attributed to many characters, and in The Odyssey, a character’s lack of perseverance will bring him his demise. Similar to Odysseus, Penelope, his wife, perseveres by staying faithful and unmarried for twenty years, while waiting for his return. Through The Odyssey, Homer suggests that those who are loyal to and homesick for their homeland are willing to persevere for their homecoming, and thereby they complete the journey that proves them a hero.
I continued to gain experience in health care. I worked at the student health center, creating and distributing relevant health related information, on campus and I worked as a home health aid. These college experiences enhanced my insight into the world of health care and provided me with greater excitement about becoming a health care provider.
While volunteering, I checked in patients, helped organize charts, and worked as a receptionist. This allowed me to serve the underserved population and work with a diverse group of professionals. It was inspiring to volunteer at the clinic because I witnessed esteemed professionals sacrifice their time to volunteer at a free clinic in order to help the community flourish. This inspires me to follow in their footsteps when I become a physician. I volunteered at the community clinic my freshman year; unfortunately, I became extremely busy with course work that I had to stop. However, I have registered to volunteer starting August and I plan to continue working throughout my senior year.
“You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter the defeats, so you know who you are, what you can rise from, how you can still come out of it” (Maya Angelou). In all the nonfiction books read in class perseverance is the main concept in each story. The dictionary defines perseverance as “continued effort to do or achieve something despite difficulties, failure, or opposition : the action or condition or an instance of persevering”. In terms of usage, perseverance is a noun. Common synonyms for perseverance include “persistence” and “steadfastness”. The antonyms of perseverance are giving up and not trying. This is important because perseverance is having to keep trying and never
What is perseverance? Perseverance is the ability to go on when things seem hopeless. It is also a measure of success, or at least how much sacrifice one is willing to make in the name of success. As students, it is impossible to achieve personal success without having a goal, or direction. The goal and direction that often propels us to achieve is perseverance. Perseverance is the ability to forge ahead despite setbacks that threaten to undermine all efforts to succeed.
Growing up, I believed that my family’s lifestyles, illnesses, and issues did not necessarily affect me. The problems that they were facing were only theirs to face. It never dawned on me that later in life I would be subjected to the same types of setbacks as they were. One of which included finding my voice. I used to be quiet. My ideas and thoughts were in my imagination because it appeared as though no one was willing to listen. I used to hide. The shadows were more of a friend than anyone of my peers. That was until I found my voice; my voice empowered me. It gave me a reason to fight for what I believe in. My voice taught me that I am not that same little girl who was scared, broken, and alone. I am now a young lady who is fierce, determined, and loved.
