Perseverance is the only thing that will truly keep the world alive. If humans had given up instead of persevering America would not exist, tyranny would reign and slavery would still exist, and the world would not be intellectually advanced as it is now. Several characters throughout literary history, such as Odysseus from Homers’ Odyssey, and Louis Zamperini in Unbroken are the prime examples of perseverance, and they did it through personal strength and determination to not be broken. After all, it is better to persevere and live a hellish life than to relinquish that life in order to live more comfortably in the hands of those who seek to degrade the soul, and there are many ways to persevere – even as a student.
Since the first page of Hillbilly Elegy by J.D. Vance, perseverance is prevalent. No matter what comes J.D. Vance’s way he always works through it. There are many ways people respond to the adversity in life, and there are many ways people respond each distinct time. Perseverance has been key in my life, not just J.D. Vance’s; I would argue every person in this world as well. Whether it be in the military, like Vance, school, sports, or a job, there is no hiding from adverse situations. J.D. Vance talks about his adversity extensively in Hillbilly Elegy, and if success is wanted, perseverance is a major key in the process. Fighting through the challenging times in life is what will get the job done in the end.
You can hear the murmurs of people as the walk through the market. The definition of perseverance is steady persistence in a course of action, a purpose, a state, especially in spite of difficulties, obstacles, or discouragement. In the book, The Breadwinner by Deborah Ellis perseverance is demonstrated throughout the book by the main character, Parvana. Perseverance is an immense trait that rules all if one contains it. Never giving up, pushing through, that is what it means, and that’s what it takes. Perseverance can be mastered by anyone, you have to fight and never back down to succeed. Raise the bar, and push past others. Both Buck and Leighton persevered by succeeding in the face of adversity and giving it everything they had.

The story “Through the Tunnel” by Doris Lessing has a main theme of perseverance throughout the entire story. The young boy in the story, Jerry, is the main character, and he was going to overcome his fear. The process in which the young boys had to engage in to get rescued was long and required time and effort, many of the kids lacked patience. In order to acquire the skill patience they first had to understand that “things you want in life do not always come as soon as you wish them to; they have to be worked for and waited for at times”, many wanted result
