Perseverance is the only thing that will truly keep the world alive. If humans had given up instead of persevering America would not exist, tyranny would reign and slavery would still exist, and the world would not be intellectually advanced as it is now. Several characters throughout literary history, such as Odysseus from Homers’ Odyssey, and Louis Zamperini in Unbroken are the prime examples of perseverance, and they did it through personal strength and determination to not be broken. After all, it is better to persevere and live a hellish life than to relinquish that life in order to live more comfortably in the hands of those who seek to degrade the soul, and there are many ways to persevere – even as a student. Louie was faced with challenges such as these, minus financially, and he kept persevering because he knew that one day he would return back home to America and reunite with everything he loves, his family (Unbroken). As an example of Louie’s perspective on his braveness through the daily tortures he told himself challenges such as “a life time of glory is worth a moment of pain” (Unbroken, 143). This quote describes how determined Louie really was, regardless of how he was beaten physically on a daily basis, he persevered through it all because he was determined to reunite with his loved ones and show people he’s not as weak as people thought he …show more content…
Hope is one of the many traits that all people have in order to continue with life. It's that person having faith that they will get what they want, and even if that means they have to suffer in order to do so, they will do it because they have that hope, that perseverance of faith (Tyrell, 2014). Louie had a hope all throughout the story, he was the one at the Japanese execution camp that had a hope that he would not be executed and he would get to return home to his family (Dalrymple, 2011). Without that hope Louie wouldn’t have made it through the execution camps, without that hope he would have given up when his plane crashed and the sharks began to attack. The quote used previously to describe perseverance can also be used to describe the hope perseverance holds. After all, throughout all the pain everyone has to hold onto that hope in order to return to that glorious lifestyle they want (Dalrymple, 2011). Louie did exactly that and that is why he returned home and led a content lifestyle after the war. That is why he goes around to schools preaching about the benefits and true meaning of perseverance. Without it, failure is
Louie Zamperini has had a miraculous life, and has stared death in the eyes countless times. Louie, in his childhood, was in many fights and did some crazy stunts that are amazed people by how he didn’t get seriously injured or die for that matter. He went to the olympics and was nearly shot by a nazi. Years later when he was in the military he survived 47 days on a raft and survived multiple horrible POW camps. In the novel Unbroken, Louie Zamperini has a history of being very rebellious but is determined to go on by any means necessary.Louie, throughout his life, has been a rebel, but was as determined as it gets whether it was running, to surviving on the raft or POW camps. Louie was a rebel when he was young for the most part, stealing,
It took courage for Louie to keep himself going, he told God in prayer that he would serve him forever if he was saved. So at camp, he would constantly run that through his head to have the courage to keep going, and to commit acts of rebellion. On page 141 it says, “...Louie tried to anticipate questions… He invented lies and practiced telling them.” It took courage for Louie to lie to his captors in order to protect the U.S., something that could have gotten him killed. Also, when asked about a plane he lied again. On page 141 saying, “What do you know about the E-Model? Nothing...It was a lie…”. This shows that Louie was courageous that he took the risk of lying about anything they asked about the American military. For Louie to that takes a lot of mental strength because he is then putting himself out there to be heavily beaten or killed. Finally, Louie was willing to escape a POW camp for freedom again. On page 165 it says, “An idea took root. Louie, Tinker and Harris were going to escape.” This showed Louie’s determination and courage to not only leave, but risk being caught. Louie wasn’t going to let anyone strip away his courage because no matter what knew he had to get out
Louie Zamperini has determination because he waited for a fish to hook on “For days, Louie lay over the side of the raft, fishhooks on his fingers, trying in vain to catch another fish”(117). Louie Zamperini is strong and pulls through the hardest situations “It gave them just enough water to last a short while longer” (117). Things like this show how strong he is “Then came a third experiment, then a fourth”(143). Louie was experimented on over and over, he was left with burning rashes and other painful symptoms.“Beatings were almost constant ”(149). Louie new everyday he was getting beat, tortured and mocked. All of the quotes show the worst things a person can go through in a lifetime and these are really bad things to have to go
Phoenix’s very name, which is derived from the name of the mythical Egyptian bird that is burned and resurrected from its own ashes, is the reader’s first hint at the character’s perseverance. Secondly, Phoenix is making this long, cold, difficult journey on foot, which is yet further testament to her determination. She is depicted as having “ skin [with]...a pattern all its own of numberless branching wrinkles and as though a whole little tree stood in the middle of her forehead,” and these connections between Phoenix and trees, which often represent endurance in nature, paint a vivid picture of the woman’s strength (Welty). Perseverance is even more so revealed when Phoenix is faced with the challenge of crossing a creek on a log, to which she says, ““Now comes the trial,”” and “leveling her cane fiercely before her like a festival figure in some parade, she began to march across” (Welty). After she has completed this feat, she remarks, almost proudly and with satisfaction, “'I wasn't
Being brave requires massive strength of mind, body, and spirit. It is being prepared to face adversity. It allows people to face their greatest enemies without fear. Out of all of the characteristics that Odysseus portrays, bravery stands out above all. There are many cases in which this shows up in The Odyssey by Homer. Specific examples that represent Odysseus's bravery are the battle of Cicones, the events at the cyclops cave, and the events with the lotus eaters.
The Odyssey, an epic poem written by Homer in the eighth century, tells the story of Odysseus, a bigger than life hero. Odysseus must embark on a twenty year long journey to get back to his home, fighting mythological monsters and creatures. Over the course of this quest he had to overcome many obstacles, including a monstrous cyclops, terrible cannibals, alluring sirens, and swaggering suitors. During this time he shows a multitude of impressive characteristics, including perseverance, the ability to learn from his mistakes, and self discipline. Throughout my three years in middle school, I too had to overcome my fair share of obstacles. Middle school is often portrayed as one of the worst experiences of your life, but I would disagree. Although
Loyalty brings people together and keep bonds between spirits close, even if two are not together
Since the first page of Hillbilly Elegy by J.D. Vance, perseverance is prevalent. No matter what comes J.D. Vance’s way he always works through it. There are many ways people respond to the adversity in life, and there are many ways people respond each distinct time. Perseverance has been key in my life, not just J.D. Vance’s; I would argue every person in this world as well. Whether it be in the military, like Vance, school, sports, or a job, there is no hiding from adverse situations. J.D. Vance talks about his adversity extensively in Hillbilly Elegy, and if success is wanted, perseverance is a major key in the process. Fighting through the challenging times in life is what will get the job done in the end.
The Perseverance of Odysseus Everyday we come across leaders that inspire us to stride for greatness, to believe in the impossible and to overcome our personal fears. These leaders are the people that motivate us to push through the rough times and run across the finish line. Homer, a Greek poet, writes an epic called The Odyssey, which discusses the journey of a valued leader in the Greeks eyes. In the Greek times, a leader that was known as Odysseus led his men through the heroic twenty year journey that took place at war and at sea.
Tenacity can be a worthy quality to have, but too much tenacity can be a flawed trait. In the epic poem, The Odyssey, Odysseus shows ambition and tenacity to reunite with his wife and son, Penelope and Telemachus. Odysseus displays loyalty to his wife and son and uses his ambition to defeat Troy in the Trojan war with the help of the goddess Athena, goddess of wisdom and battle strategy. Odysseus has a constant goal to arrive home on the island of Ithaca with his family, Penelope and Telemachus. However, when Odysseus was sleeping, his ship got near enough to the island of Ithaca that Penelope could see his ship. Then his shipmates unleashed the bag of wind given to Odysseus from the wind god, filled with the winds that would steer Odysseus’s
Hope alone is a life-changing emotion or feeling, it alone can decide someone's fate in a life or death situation in which they have s main say in what happens. For example, in the book we read the Odyssey, there are multiple areas where hopes play a pretty big factor in the story. The Odyssey is a story where a man named Ulysses had to go to war for ten years and had a rough ten-year journey to get back home to his wife, son, family, and friends. He never gave up his hope that he would see his family again and that is the main thing in this essay is to never give up hope.
Here is one way Reynolds expresses the theme that courageous people are the ones who live with hope. Reynolds states,“The real test of courage was whether or not you could face
For example, when Louie is captured by the Japanese and taken to a POW (Prisoner of War) camp where he among others if both physically and emotionally abused he keeps trying to survive. He knows from firsthand experience that if he perseveres it will get better. This is proven when Louie after experience in three different camps is ordered to hold a fifty pound beam of wood over his head for ten minutes (Hillenbrand 295). Even though Louis was sickly, weak and skinny he managed to do it without giving up. This once again portrays the theme to always persevere because without it Louie would be dead.
When Louie and Phil first arrived at the first camp they went through many beatings and pain. One of them was very bad, “In the last, a full pint of fluid was pumped into their veins. They were lucky to survive” (143). This was when they got a fluid put into them and it caused rash and dizziness. In the text it said that 1,000 of people died from this and that they were lucky to survive. To survive that they needed to be vigor and they both did even after 47 days out at sea. Next example of when Louie was resilient was on page 145, “Louie’s nose was badly broken. He’d pushed the bones back in place with his fingers.” If anybody's nose got broken it was be very painful to get put it back and it was broken, but Louie did it. That shows that Louie was strong and that he could do that. Final example is “For weeks, Louie was deaf in one ear. The Bird beat him daily” (186). The Bird was fascinated with Louie and how Louie was everything the Bird wanted to be. The Bird beat Louie all the time and sometimes the Bird would feel bad, but he would still continue. Also Louie was strong and never stopped fighting for his life. Although the Bird beat him daily, Louie still survived and went on to be a
Persevere - continue in a course of action even in the face of difficulty or with little or no prospect of success. This definition is hardly the truth, as it shows no emotion or struggle. It pains me to think that such smart people can write such anti-climactic, non-emotional, monotone, stereotypical definitions for something that means so much more. In many movies and writings you see people persevere for a very important reason, the same is true for real life. To persevere is to keep going, no matter what is thrown at you. When u keep falling and falling and falling, you keep getting up and up and up because you have some motivation, some will to achieve the thing you are persevering towards. But, a better definition would be, Persevere
