Horriffice clowns that eat children, deranged murderers slaughtering innocents, or camping trips turned into a disastrous blood bathed frenzy. Horror has found a commonplace in today’s society. There has been an evolution in society’s perception of the of exposing children to horror. Out of this evolution has come the rating scale used on all movies and television series. The rating removes the parent’s ability to judge and decide if their child may watch. Parents and parents only have the right to determine what their child watches on television.
Duties of a parent range from defending their child as a mother wolf does with her cub, to providing the basic necessities of life. Parents are known to be outraged at their own parents telling them how to raise

This defence does not include deciding how parents should raise their children. Preventing parents from deciding something as simple as what their child may and may not watch based on their age does not protect children. Dangers and challenges await later in life and postponing basic knowledge that life is not as innocent it seems does nothing for a child but act as a setback. Furthermore, there are numerous instances in which people even as adults are unable to watch horror movies without having nightmares and uncontrollable fears of what they watched. People even as adults have similar issues as children yet restrictions are only placed on what children watch and not what all people watch. This only postpones the fear and does not mitigate it. Thus the same issue occurs at a later point in life when a child could have developed alongside the goar and horror that fills our media and had a healthy understanding for the genre instead of a fear that continues to be ignored. Clearly the restrictions placed on children's viewing by parties outside that of the immediate family have more flaws than they attempt to
The MPAA’s movie rating system has been progressively allowing movies to teach children immoral values and something must be done to fix this. The different topics on which the MPAA base their ratings on have skewed standards. One
As a seven year old I stumbled across a trailer for a new horror movie. I can’t remember the title, and I can’t remember the story, but to this day when it’s late at night and the house is silent I can sometimes hear the click click click of the creature’s long nails on my window. The things you see as a child can stay with you, as the monster did with me, so it’s no surprise that there is a such controversy over the topic of censorship in the media. Ultimately this issue can be boiled down to it being the parent’s responsibility to censor the graphic media their children have access to and not the responsibility of the content creators or a different force such as the MPAA, after all, a
No parent wants their kid to be raised as one who is violent and commits horrifying acts. This article shows just that by giving evidence about viewing these violent movies. "They urge parents to follow the rating guidelines set by the Motion Picture Association of America. However, APPC researchers report that PG-13 movies portray the same amount of violence as R-rated movies" (Point 8). The point article uses this 'counter-evidence' to show how parents can no longer rely on the ratings to determine what is suitable for
One review, done by a board of specialists, demonstrated that when kids are presented here and now to violent films, TV and computer games that there is an expansion in forceful deduction and conduct. Their reviews likewise demonstrate a long haul impact into adulthood when people are ceaselessly presented to savage media growing up, with companion manhandle and other aggressive
It is easy to accept to believe that children are exposed to negative effects by watching media violence. Children react differently than adults after having watched violence. For example, many children may experience having nightmares. According to the book entitled, “The 11 Myths of Media Violence,” it says
Understanding this code and rating system will allow parents to make a proper decision on what to show children. Children should not be viewing anything above a S1 because after this rating, the content becomes too involved with behaviors and dialogue both. In the overall rating system, the safest ratings for children are General (G) and Parental Guidance (PG). G are considered acceptable for all age groups, however there may be mild violence, sexual content or offensive language. PG may not be suitable for all children but there is no age restriction. PG recommends that parents be nearby watching in order to answer any possible questions the children may have about the content (Saskatchewan Prevention Institute, 2012). The rating system is a well done system that creates a picture about the content in the program. This system allows for proper programs to be determined in order to prevent inappropriate content from being
In the article, it examines how the behavior of minors are affected by violent movies and television shows. The article begins by explaining what effect television has on us. It explains how people who most likely watch violent television shows and movies, show a more aggressive behavior. To prove this, the source gathered a series of experiments that showed how households that often watch violent television show and movies normally report their children imitating what they saw on the television and usually more aggressive behavior. One of the most famous experiments that tested
The media is currently regulated according to voluntary industry established rating systems. Many critics state that these systems that are in place do not effectively inform guardians or prevent children from accessing violent content. In 2007, the United States government addressed that some regulations might be placed in order to protect children. Such regulations have yet to be seen but are being pushed (Gerdes81). Violent media is protected by the first amendment, which is why society is fine without the regulations. They would rather place the possible effects on children growing up rather than feel like their freedom of speech is being tampered with. As stated, “Naturally, debate over media violence stirs up strong emotions because it raises concern about the balance between public safety and freedom of speech” (Matter 1). In order to keep hold of our rights, society is not willing to regulate the amount of violent content that is presented in the media. Professionals such as doctors should also be more aware of the role that media is playing on the lives of their patients. It is crucial for them to be asking what devices that patients have at home and what they watch and play. The government realizes that they should place regulations, but it is a difficult situation for them due to the courts protecting violent speech under the first amendment. This is in order to help place some regulations and maintain a healthy amount of violence in the media that they are intaking (Beresein 1). Eighty-two percent of parents that allow their children to watch between two to four hours on a daily basis believe that violence in children's programming is concerning, and nine out of ten says that they are seeing a negative impact taking place in their children (Gerdes 82). Many counter this by saying that it is the parent's
In conclusion, horror movies and horror games shouldn't be for a younger audience because it could affect their lives in a negative way. They could give a child stress, give them anxiety, or even be influenced to something dangerous. And so, kids should be able to wait until they are older if they have fears. Because not all kids are afraid, but they could still not understand that it's wrong if they try to do what they do in the movies. So, the horror movies should be left for adults until the children are old enough to understand the
In the following essay I will study and write about the contrast between sound and the moving image in horror films and how the use of sound can create intense feelings and unknown situations that the mind itself. I will look at the low budget, found footage, psychological horror film The Blair Witch (1999) because of it 's uncommon use of techniques used in a film and In Absentia because of it 's emotional efficacy.
When a natural impulse is repressed, silenced, and kept in the shadows, it could easily break out at any given moment (Conger 84). People need to keep feeding these impulses so that they can stay in control. This is where horror movies have their major role in society: they make it easier for people to cope with these impulses, allowing them an access to images of blood, violence, and sex. In this way, our impulses can be managed from a safe place and they can be controlled more easily. All those monsters and murderers in the horror movies represent the people's shadows, their repressed behaviors and feelings. As people watch horror movies, they unconsciously identify themselves with the monsters and murderers that appear on them. As a result, these movies allow them to release that "repressed energy",
Parenting includes providing physical care, reliable shelter, education, medical care, physical safety as well as nourishment. There is also a social aspect which entails providing emotional support, love,
Throughout literature and cinema history, horror has been used to hide certain fantasies and reach into the deepest parts of the human conscience where their most inner fears exist. It was not till recently that horror characters were used to reach into other parts of the human brain: sexual desires. There are many horror films and books that show women falling for their alleged rapist, characters developing relationships with supernatural creatures, and girls wanting to tear the clothes off a vampire’s body. Vampires have been around since the 18th century where a flux of vampire superstition started in Western Europe. This caused mass hysteria and people being accusingly staked for “vampirism.” People were scared of the thought of these
Technological advancements have given rise to unprecedented access to television shows, movies, and video games. Scientists have dedicated much of their attention on how media, particularly violent media, influences viewers, and players. It is important to keep a child’s innocence while still allowing them to explore the world around them, and acts of violence are one thing they don’t need to witness. By avoiding media that contains graphic violence children will, in turn, be less
Television is a big part of today’s society. Everybody watches television, including the children. There is a potential problem with letting children watch television. Ask this question, would someone let their own child watch some of the programming that they watch, too? Some of these programs are intended for the adult generation, not young children. Violence has a major role in television these days. Letting children watch this violence could corrupt their minds and eventually lead to bad behavior. There needs to be a limitation on the types of television programming that parents let their children watch, because violence in television can negatively affect children.
