As a peer mentor at the College of San Mateo, I volunteer my time to help incoming freshmen thorough the rough transition of high school to community college. As a underrepresented student who moved to the U.S from a third world country, I work with a lot of students like myself and make sure that they have all the tools and resources to do well in their academics. I have meeting with my mentees every week to check their progress throughout the semester. In addition to weekly meetings, I also have one on one tutoring sessions to help my mentees if they are struggling in their classes, especially math and science. Being a peer mentor allows me to make a significant different in the lives of other students that came from a similar background
Being a part of my school’s peer tutoring program has been the most gratifying experience of my high school career. As a student, I can relate to those that struggle in a subject and are unable to connect with the material being taught in class. I have worked with students who have lost confidence in themselves because of the difficulty they were having in school. To be given the opportunity to assist students to reach their academic goals is fulfilling. As a peer tutor, I edit essays, share scholarship searches, assist with homework, and provide studying tips and test taking strategies. I enjoy working with my group to develop habits to be more successful. With each higher grade earned, test anxiety relieved, and confident smile of those that I help, I know that the work I am doing is
The TRiO program at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro has helped me tremendously in my college career. I was a member of the TRiO program at East Wake High school in Wendell, NC before entering college. I am very grateful that I had the opportunity to be a part of the TRiO program here at UNCG. Upon entering college, I was very nervous and anxious that I would not be able to adjust to the fast pace atmosphere of college. I felt unsure of myself and doubted by capabilities as a student. However, I soon learned that my nervousness subsided with the help of the Student Support Services and TRiO program faculty. The TRiO program’s faculty has assisted me in enhancing my organization skills, studying habits, leadership capabilities,
Natural Mentorship Program While foster placements focus on preparing youth aging out of care for independence, youth are losing the ability to develop supportive relationships with adults before and after signing out of care. According to Greeson (2016) youth who have a natural relationship with an adult allows for growth and is associated with positive outcomes for youth aging out of care and permanent relationships. This proposal is in favor of raising the extension of placement in New York to 24 years of age, still giving the option to sign out of care at the age of 21 years of age.
Based on the analysis of the data collected for this research, academic and social assimilation was necessary to keep African American women college students in community colleges. Every mentoring relationship may differ student to student, but overall, mentoring helps students to develop self-confidence, educational goals, and the aspiration to be successful in an educational setting. As seen in the results of this survey, students thought that consulting was the most helpful service offered by the AASP, as faculty mentors were able to develop compelling relationships outside the classroom to contribute to their academic success. Students took advantage counseling sessions provided to them as 58% of students

Stepping into the first day of the mentorship course, I believed I had a solid understanding of how to be a mentor. Using the reason of “I’ve been there before” to justify my selection, I did not realize that there was much more to helping peers than just experience. Through the FIG mentor course, I gained new knowledge that looked at a student holistically and incorporated the differences each individual brings to campus; hopefully, I can apply this knowledge to assist new first-year students who are transitioning from high school to college in the fall.
The aim of this essay is to discuss on how the reflection on mentorship will be undertaken, how and why the model of reflection will be used and the importance of confidentiality. I will reflect the mentorship by ensuring that the mentee during clinical practice is put at ease throughout the learning experience of four weeks (Quinn, and Hughes 2007, p. 29). Also, I will use the principle of Kolb’s learning cycle as my model of reflection because reflecting is an essential element of learning. As I am the mentor, I will follow this cycle in a clockwise direction with Jude, so she would have to reflect on the skills learnt by reviewing the whole situation (Kolb’s learning cycle 1984 in Rose and Best 2005, p.129). This would enable Jude to
The aim of this assignment is to critically reflect on the experience of mentoring and assessing a student in clinical practice. As the student was on a four week placement the assessment process will be discussed incorporating the qualities of the mentor and the effect it can have on the mentor/student relationship. In turn evaluating the learning environment and teaching strategies used including learning styles, reflecting on how they were applied to help the student. Finally, the evaluation of overall performance as a mentor. For the purpose of this work a pseudonym will be used to maintain confidentiality hence the student will be known as ’A’. The College prep and Academic Mentoring Program matches students one-on-one with college-educated staff and volunteers to strengthen the student’s math, language arts, and social skills while preparing them for the college journey. Students meet with their “mentors” at one of our academic mentoring sites throughout the school year to work on a range of academic development and college prep processes. In addition to the one-to-one mentor relationship, College Link offers a myriad of enrichment activities to supplement the students’ experience and continue to foster a college-going culture. We conduct college tours in partnership with colleges to give students an actual taste of the college experience, assist admission, and financial aid applications,
As a senior dental hygiene student, we had the opportunity to be a peer facilitator to the first year dental hygiene students where we had to demonstrate, assist, and evaluate dental hygiene theory and then put it into practice. I really enjoyed it because I had the possibility to do what my seniors once did with me. Helping the freshman, giving tips, and showing alternatives on how to overcome their individual clinical complexities was a satisfying experience. It reminded me that just one year ago I was experiencing the same problems or difficulties, so I paid close attention to all of their questions and concerns. I feel I did not encounter any difficulties or weaknesses while I was mentoring the freshman. Telling them that I had the same
Peer mentor faculty communicates with each other and with another student in a friendly way. Peer mentors are there to offer helps to the student who need it, even the
Throughout my years in the education system, I think I have gathered enough information to answer what is a peer mentor. In my eyes, a peer mentor, in general, is an older sibling. I made this conclusion based of what I have seen in the past. As an older sibling myself, I want what is best for my two younger brothers. If they ask a question, I give them an answer to the best of my abilities and if I think my answer is not enough, then I will research and get back to them. I want my brothers to be on the right path for them and I will do whatever it takes for them to get there. If they need help in anything, then I will be by their side. If my brothers want to talk about anything, then I will listen and give suggestions. If they managed to get
