Pediculosis Pediculosis, more widely known as lice, is a transmittable skin infection caused by a blood sucking parasite known as louse. Lice’s main supply of sustenance is the blood of their host, they usually feed about five times per day causing severe itching, also known as pruritus. Pruritus can lead to sores, which can lead to a secondary bacterial skin infection. Lice can affect the hair, body, and pubic region. In the United States alone it is found that from 6 million to 12 million new cases of head lice are diagnosed in school children each year. Pediculus humanus capitis infects the head, which can mainly be found on the scalp, on the back of the neck, and behind the ears. Personal hygiene is major factor for this infestation. It commonly occurs among people who do not have the luxury of changing clothes or showering often. It is prevalent in refugee camps and in homeless people. Body lice resides in the seams of clothing, and they are primarily found by the trunk, neck, and thighs. Pubic lice is caused by Phthirus pubis which is commonly referred to as crabs because of its claws on its second and third legs that so closely resemble a rock crab. Pubic lice in transmitted through sexual contact and is highly likely to be caught by an unsuspecting person. Risk for pubic lice from sexual experiences can exceed 90 percent. Infestation of pubic lice is found in the pubic area, rectal area, and can also be found, in males, in facial, chest, and/or abdominal hair. Head and pubic lice must be treated through the manual removal of the louse with a comb, then pediculicides will be used. No non pesticide lotions are currently available in the United States, but they can be purchased in the United Kingdom, and they have the best treatment results for head lice. Treatment for lice infestations exceeds 1 billion dollars every year. Due to the overuse of pediculicides new infestations of lice are becoming resistant to typical treatments and new treatments are being considered and studied, such as essential oils and suffocation
