Peaceful Resistance Impact On Society

The Constitution of the United States of America provides citizens with the right to freedom of speech, peaceable assembly, and to air grievances in the first amendment. However, refusal to abide by laws is breaking the law. Whether it is lawful or not, peaceful resistance positively impacts a free society. As a democratic republic, Americans elect representatives to essentially do their bidding in government, trusting their judgement and knowledge when making laws.

Boycotts. Labor Resistance. Sit-Ins. Protests. Blockades. Debt Refusals. Tax Resistance. Civil disobedience has been a prominent form of influencing governmental policy and law to accept differing perspectives. Since the birth of the nation–beginning with the Boston Tea Party and continuing into modern movements such as the women’s suffrage–the United States relies on civil disobedience in order to keep governmental growth from becoming stagnant and aiding in the optimization of benefits for its citizens. Civil disobedience is an intentional, non-violent act against the state exercised by those banned from exerting power with the purpose of bringing equality, moral conviction, an upright criminal justice system, and extensive action. Although civil disobedience invalidates governmental authority, it is a necessary trade off for the protection of liberty guaranteed by the first amendment. Civil disobedience, as a recognized procedure, is an obligation for all citizens to combat injustice among legislature.

Since the beginning of american history there have been peaceful and non peaceful protests. These protests have had valuable effects on American society such as Martin Luther King Jr and Rosa Parks have impacted society greatly and for the better. In my opinion peaceful protests still have negative effects though they are immensely more appropriate than non peaceful protests because peaceful protests often turn violent because people don't know how to act for example Trump Protests.

Peaceful resistance in the United States of America, done with the right intentions, has a positive impact of a free society. I hold this belief because as humans we can be flawed in our ways of thinking and require something to draw our attention for us to realize our flawed views. Peaceful resistance is positive because it draws attention to an issue in society, it communicates a level of civility, and it attempts to initiate a positive way of addressing issues in society.

Peaceful resistance positively impacts a free society, particularly in a Democracy such as the United States. Abraham Lincoln famously described our national foundation as a “government of the people, by the people, for the people”, and for such a statement to be true, it is necessary that voices of US citizens be heard.

Civil disobedience is a crucial part of any free society, especially a society that wishes to give its citizens the most liberty possible. Looking back on American history, one can see that the colonists originally protested the laws that Britain had imposed, and had done so peacefully. By not paying taxes and by assembling outside public offices, the colonists disobeyed British laws and the British crown. Their protests not only helped spark the American Revolution, but also made light of the fact that any free society relies on its citizens to disobey the government, especially when it's done peacefully.

On January 21, 2017, millions of women, and even some men, joined together in various cities to march for civil rights. According to the March on Washington’s official website, these people exerted their energy in union to inflict liberation, “joining in diversity to show our presence in numbers.” These citizens were unhappy with the acts and rhetoric of our current federal power holders, and they acted. People of all colors, genders, beliefs, and backgrounds joined together to uphold the rights for marginalized people. In fact, in the Women’s March’s mission they state, “defending the most marginalized among us is defending all of us.” As Americans, these people had the right to protest and spread their beliefs, and generated a historic event. Peaceful resistance to laws negatively impacts a free society, because it sets forth restrictions on that society; while at the same time it positively impacts society by keeping the violence out of their protesting. Peaceful residence to laws began before the birth and crucifixion of Jesus Christ, and continues today with Trumps immigration policies.

I strongly believe that peaceful resistance to laws does not only positively affect a free society but it also makes sure that civil and human rights are upheld in a free society as well. One could even make the argument that our own great nation was built on the very act of civil disobedience to unjust laws. In the famous essay “Civil Disobedience” Henry David Thoreau he states that people's first obligation is to what is moral and right not what is simply dictated by the law. This then means that when a government is unjust, people are in the right to refuse to follow the law and distance themselves from the government in general. The idea that peaceful resistance can positively or negatively impact a free society is a topic that requires much thought. Our basic freedoms in this country allow us the right to peacefully protest an injustice that has been done and permitted. One can stage arguments that favor both points of view. The difficulty comes in questioning which laws are debatable and which are not. Do we peacefully resist to laws that protect life or do we resist to laws that seem unpalatable to us personally? I believe we, as Americans, need to be very clear on where to draw the lines. The laws that our nation has adopted are extremely important to the functioning and growth of a proper and stable society.

Peaceful resistance is a major part of American history, from the American Revolution to the 1960’s Civil Rights Movement to the Travel Ban protests of today. These instances of peaceful resistance shape American society for the better, as the voices of minorities are heard and unjust laws are ended. Peaceful resistance does positively impact a free society, as supported by Henry Thoreau, demonstrated by the 1960 Civil Rights Movement, and anticipated by protests of today.

Peaceful resistance is a mannerism that brings positive impacts to the idea of a "free society". However, one can say that the extent of a certain few brought a negative cloud of shame onto the idea. There have been many examples in our history that prove that one can resist peacefully without disturbing the rights and liberties of one's neighbor. Many would agree that when the negatives or "the ugly side" of an idea is emerged, that is all anyone will ever remember. One can claim the resistance of Rosa Parks was peaceful and dignified.

Peaceful resistance positively affects our community. By people simply saying no and doing simple actions does not put anyone in harm and it also does not let anything get out of hand. Like from our recent election the next day there was a peaceful protest about the people not feeling safe or wanting trump to be president. As people are doing this bystanders are yelling he won get over it, or there's nothing you can do now. Well there is something we can do and that is show the new president what we are feeling and do it in a manner that isn't violent because then people will not take use seriously and nothing will get done. Overall I believe it does not affect the community in a negative way but in a good way that way people can take use seriously and know we are not going to stop until we are heard and

Peaceful resistance to laws positively impacts a free society. Rather than having violent movements and harming citizens, it is better to peacefully resist. Once a violence is used, the resistance to the law becomes nulled. People tend to not follow a violence protester. Once a violent riot starts, chaos is everywhere. People forget what they are truly fighting for. They unconsciously run away with the fear of getting harmed and dare not to go back. A peaceful resistance on the other hand leads citizens to join and support. People are able to see what they are fighting for and their real intentions. They are able to stand and cause no problem to people passing by as they are showing their support through silent voices. Many famous activists and leaders are for nonviolence. Mahatma Gandhi, a primary leader of India’s independence
