Even when I was young, I felt called to help others. When I was 10 years old, I approached my mom and told her that I wanted to help kids in Africa get food. I gave her my allowance and we sent away for 100 lbs. of rice and beans to be sent to hungry kids. When I was 13, I met a woman who had just returned from 9 months doing overseas mission work and serving others. The stories that she told me and the lives that she inarguably impacted spoke to me. The summer after my freshman year I went on a church retreat and we spent one of our days volunteering in a resale shop that was in a very poor neighborhood. These seemingly small occasions in my life led me to my decision. I want to help others. Lately I’ve been researching my options for after graduation. One of the things that I absolutely want to do is volunteer in the Peace Corps. Since the Peace Corps. was established in 1961, over 225,000 Americans have served. That means over 225,000 Americans have taken time out of their lives to help others. That means that 225,000 volunteers have made an impact on hundreds of lives each. Children have been educated, wells have been built, innumerable projects …show more content…
Whether it be lack of food, clean water, healthcare, or even a home, I feel that each and every one of us should do our part to aid these people. I am incredibly blessed and fortunate to have been born into a happy home in the United States. I have never experienced life without the bare essentials, but a study done by the United Nations Development Programme in 2015 says that over half of the world’s population currently lives on less than $2.50/day. While these statistics are shocking, I don’t feel hopeless. I know that each and every one of us are human. No matter our nationality, religion, or ethnicity, we are united in that simple fact and I feel that it is my personal responsibility to help my fellow
The Peace Corps is organized into groups of volunteers and trainees that are placed in different developing countries according to their cause. Some of these causes include: education of children and adults, health and HIV/AIDS, environment, business, agriculture and youth. There are currently 7,733 volunteers and
Growing up, I took every opportunity given to me to help those around me. I aided the homeless at the early age of 8 alongside my mom. Helping boost homeless women and children self-esteem by participating in clothing, food, and school supply giveaways. Beginning at the age of 13, during Sunday services I would watch the younger kids in the nursery changing their diapers, entertain, making sure that they were safe and well taken care of. I also have volunteered at the libraries in the Newton County area efficiently shelving books.
By serving others, I improve not only their lives, but also mine. My church often reaches out to the community and serves them according to their needs. Whether the members of our community need food, shelter, clothes, or school supplies, we are happy to help. I find these service projects satisfying because I get to see my impact I have on society. The look of joy and relief on a person’s face as they receive the the first meal they’ve had in days, or gotten the help they need for their children is priceless and completely unforgettable.
The volunteers are overseas for 27 months and work in areas such as agriculture, community economic development, education, environment, health, and youth in development. “Agriculture volunteers work with small-scale farmers and families to increase food security and production and adapt to climate change while promoting environmental conservation,” according to the Peace Corps website. Volunteers teach new techniques and develop projects to assist them. Education is about teaching lessons that last a lifetime. Volunteers teach subjects like math, science, or English. They can also develop libraries. The environment volunteers are like agriculture but focus more on the conservation part. They promote sustainable use of natural resources. “The health volunteers work within their communities to promote important topics such as nutrition, maternal and child health, basic hygiene, and water sanitation,” (peacecorps.gov). They also work HIV/AIDS education and prevention programs according to the Peace Corps website. Youth in development volunteers are all about empowering the next generation of leaders. “Volunteers work with youth in communities to promote engagement and active citizenship,” (peacecorps.gov). Volunteers teach about gender awareness, employability, sex education, fitness programs; think of it as a Big Brother campaign.
There has always been a desire for in me to help others who can be in difficult situations or in need of help. This desire has pushed me to pursue a career within the social work field. There have been numerous instances in my life, where I took the chance to help others before helping myself. Whether these instances dealt with my family, friends, peers or strangers, I have always seen the worth in helping others. Putting others before myself has always been an enjoying experience because I am able to be selfless and provide opportunities to others who might not have the resources or help to do so. Knowing that I can have a great impact on others’ lives by directing them to resources or listening to their experiences excites me because I want
My father is going to retire in some years and my mother is a house wife. They both have invested in their house heavily therefore these reasons might affect my family’s ability to fund my college tuition.
The majority of these rural villages, will be less likely to be influenced by the effort to change these villages into a democratic state. However, the Peace Corps is a broad topic meaning much more than the spread of democracy. Nearly 220,000 American associated into the Peace Corps, this is not a waste of taxpayer’s money. These 220,000 people have changed the lives of
From there, the agency flourished and had seven thousand volunteers in forty-four countries within two years (Neumann). It soon showed it could more than fulfill its purpose, whether it be battling the Cold War by showing the benefits of American capitalism or fostering political relationships with developing countries. Additionally, the Peace Corps gave young adults a gateway to a plethora of experiences that before seemed distant, allowing them to contribute in a non-violent matter and be immersed in exotic cultures. However, the opportunity of the Peace Corps was limited to a select few and, in turn, by having a concentration of extremely dedicated and compassionate people, the agency was able to make its
I have always enjoyed helping people out. In my school they have a club called National Honors Society. This club gives people more of an opportunity to do community service hours. Everyone is required to complete fifteen hours a year. Last year I completed over twenty five hours of community service. Every time I saw I had an opportunity I would take it. I don't see those fifteen hour requirements as the only way to be and stay in this club; I see it as an opening to be able to help my community all for a return of a smile. People need to see that there are others just like me, who are willing to help, and want the best for others, for nothing in return. I have never known why it is that helping others when they are needed makes me feel happy. In a way, it's one of my happiness's. I know what it's like to have a need and to not have anyone around to help. I am the kind of person who doesn't want others to feel that way, at least not all the time. I know every day someone has a need of some kind and they can't do anything about it. That's what people like me are for, to help out even if it's just every once in a while. Events all around constantly need help setting things up or just need a little help. All the help people can get is always good enough. I am taking responsibility to help people see that not everyone is selfish, not everyone takes advantage of things. I am always grateful to be able to give my time to my community, my people. America needs more people who are willing to give. Donations can be made to hospitals or orphanages. I do community service and projects now, they may be little, but I know they still matter. In my future, I see myself to continue my route, possibly even creating bigger community projects. Because America can only focus on so much, people like me are able to take care of the rest of the
I remember the first time I understood French outside of the classroom. I was visiting France on a balcony in the Louvre when a man passed by me. He stopped, held out his hand and said, “il pleut.” I will never be able to convey the feeling I got when I understood that one simple phrase. I was practically vibrating with excitement.
“ We are all here on earth to help others” said W.H Auden. Everybody needs help it might not be a life threatening situation, it might just be helping out with a small chore but, people still need help. Have you ever helped someone or something in need? I have, one day Mrs. Melissa called and she needed my mom’s and I help.It wasn’t a big deal it was just someone in the world needing help.
For as long as I can remember I have always had the desire to serve and help others. Whether it was around the corner or across the globe, I knew it was something that I wanted to be a part of. When I was fifteen, a teacher in my high school made a presentation talking about how he volunteered in Africa and was primarily volunteering with one part of the community, but also focused on building wells for drinking water with some community members. At the end of his presentation I thought “I’m doing that”. Time went by and I always had the Peace Corps in the back of my head.
As a student, I have demonstrated many works of service to my community and school. Service opportunities have shaped me into the person I am today and these projects have made me realize how fortunate I am for all that I have. While I've been doing these service projects through the years, it has been a pleasure seeing the joy on the faces of people that aren't as fortunate as I am. Service projects that I have completed include managing the fish booth at the St. Leo's Parish Festival, being an altar server at St. Leo's Parish, helping cook dinner for the Ridgway Fire Department during carnival day setup, participating in the St. Marys Light Up Night by dancing, and Christmas caroling to local residents. I also participated in a zombie/princess
Ever since I was a young kid I have always been interested in movies. My grandma, who was full of the wise the life experience left, always knew about my interest in movies. She feed my vain for the art. Even though her religion, she professed Adventist of seven-day religion, didn't let her go to the cinema, she always found the way to took me to the cinema. She and I enjoyed watch movies. We used to sit in the darkness room, with our faces illuminated from the reflection of the light which rebooted from the screen, both absorbs in the plot of the movie which made us laughed or cried. After the movie, while we went back to her home, she started to talk about the movie. She had a particular point of view where the main story
For example; the United States itself and other nations such as Somalia and Congo continue to have people with no shelter over their head and those with no food to eat, regardless of how hard some may strive to make ends meet, they are still in poverty. As those more auspicious, we should consider it as a moral obligation to assist those people who are less fortunate, be it those in the same nation as us or those farther away.
