Democracy does not require equality of income and wealth. The wealth of does, however, change how much equality and representation is technically given to different groups of people. In America, majority rule will sometimes allow a majority to use its power to take the rights of other groups of people. Therefore, allowing a country and its government to become less egalitarian.
For example, take a look at the statistics about the wage gap, specifically between women and men. Women are paid less than men in almost all career paths, thus creating what is called a wage gap. This gap, however, is much larger and far worse for women of color. According to the American Association of University Women, “Asian American women’s salaries show the smallest gender pay gap” while “the gap was largest for Hispanic and Latina women”. This wage gap makes it extremely difficult for women,

When William Levitt built a development, a black veteran moved into one of the houses. “The house was pelted with rocks and crosses were burned on the lawn” after a mob of people surrounded the house. This seems to continue today; as an example, notice the achievement gap for minorities is lower, due to lower funding for schools.
Finally, take a look at child poverty, which is a sensitive subject for many. National Center for Children in Poverty created a study to discover how much child poverty affected the United States. Once the research was completed, the NCCP revealed that a large percentage (“nearly half”) live their lives in poverty. This is due to the families’ inability to support children, most likely from low-income jobs.
With three examples, it is not difficult to see that complete equality in America still has a long way to go. Even when we have made progress in past, the United States needs to continue to move forward in order to achieve equality for all its
As mentioned by Ruane and Cerulo in Second Thoughts, harsh realities of poverty affect children’s lives in profound ways. Children lack any power in improving their circumstances and depend on adults to gain access to basic necessities. Access to proper healthcare, education, and basic nutrition continues to be an obstacle for children. Poverty impedes children’s aptitude to learn and contributes to poor overall health and mental health. Perhaps most important, poverty becomes a cyclical nature that is difficult to overcome. Children who experience poverty when they are young tend to experience persistent poverty over the course of their entire lives. According to the Child Welfare League of America, the national poverty rate for children
On a broader aspect, it says men and women are equal. Though at a bottom level, women are still struggling to occupy the same status as men in the outer world. Stratification between the two genders is seen everywhere including the household or the workplace. Even today, women still earns less as compared to men involved in the same profession. Like a male physician makes $140,000, while a female in the same profession makes $88,000. Statisticians at the US census bureau looked at almost 821 occupations. After adjusting for workers’ ages, education and work experience, they found a substantial gender gap in the earnings of the workers. Scholars at the Census Bureau studied several characteristics and after taking into
Is America the best country in the world like it claims to be? Numerous controversial issues can keep Americans debating all day long. Bias is one of the main causes of these disputable topics. Discrimination against certain groups of people still exist today in America. Issues regarding gender can lead to big disputes because everybody has a different opinion. Some people believe men are the superior gender, while other people believe the opposite. The controversial issue of wage inequality deserves to be addressed because women are just as equal to men. A step further into equalizing genders would be wage equality. There are economical, social and political reasons why the United States should equalize pay.
The U.S.A is widely perceived to be a nation of freedom by other countries but it seems very restrictive on some issues it has been battling since it was founded. America’s population needs to change many things before it can truly be name the “Land of the free”. The definition of freedom is flexible but it’s doubtful that discrimination and intolerance is in any of them.
Human rights are rights that we deserve including the right to equal wages; gender and ethnic inequality has been an on-going issue in the United States for a very long time. This inequality has been the reason for the Wage Gap which is a violation of everyone’s human rights. Some people believe that the wage gap is just a gender problem but it is not, it is unequal opportunities for racial and gender minorities; in fact some women that are of a certain race are paid significantly less than someone who is only of one minority. The wage gap relates to human rights because it violates the right to standard adequate living and fair wage. The wage gaps existence is soon to be understood through the deplorable conditions of women and racial
First off, women in America can’t make as much money as the average white male, as stated before. This is an issue for women across the states, and while most people could simply assume that women just tend to pick lower paying jobs, which is only slightly true, women still tend to make less money in ALL jobs and fields compared to men. However, 21% is simply the average wage gap throughout the nation. In certain states, such as Louisiana, the gap is even higher at 35%. Equally important, this gap can increase even more based on their race as well. Compared to white men, black women make 63% of their annual wage. For Pacific Islanders, 62%. For Hispanic women, it’s as low as 54%. On a bigger scale, this means that for every $100 that the average white male makes, the average Spanish woman can only make $54.
Democracy came about in a very interesting fashion. It first started out as, a wealthy class of rich males in ancient Greece who had the power to vote and be citizens; while no one else was able to be a citizen and participate in democracy. This notion of democracy slowly evolved out of different revolutions and ideas. We saw great leaps forward in in the evolution of democracy during the US revolution which was exemplified by the cry of: “No taxation without representation.” In the French revolution, in which there has been so much has studied about, is another example of inequality helping democratization. In the modern era, we have seen the Arab spring rise and fall, with some countries making modest reforms and people fighting for as many reforms as they could get; among these, the idea of equality. Pure equality is the striving force that democracy will always try to reach and will never truly achieve.
In the 21st Century the number of women enrolling in higher education institutions is surpassing the numbers of men enrolled. The graduation rates of women from high school and higher education are most often higher than for men. The number of women graduates from most professional occupations, including higher paying medicine, law and business, will exceed the number of men graduates in the near future. In numerous occupational areas with a majority of women graduates, salaries already surpass salaries in occupational areas with a majority of men graduates.
“I think every female knows it, and they all know it is happening, but nobody wants to say anything[...]”(Koerner) , says Rwvvffvafg-fdadd89s[p9s8ps8ssowan Blanchard, an actress, as she explains her thoughts on the global effects of the gender pay gap on singers. Seeing that Rowan still knows the aspects of worldly issues at such a young age deepens the severity of this wage gap. This gap is how women in many countries are experiencing unequal pay in their workforce. Although this disparity has been occurring globally, the gap has decreased since the 1980’s but nothing has completely ended the inequality around the world.
According to the Canadian Women’s Foundation, the wage gap between man and women has existed since women has gotten into the labour market and this difference is due to many reasons such as traditions, the nature of jobs and sex discrimination. It is possible to notice the existence of a wage difference between both sexes in almost every industry in Canada, but the wage gap varies among the different existing occupations in Canada as well as the nature of employment could affect greatly the income differences. The income gap between man and women could vary as well because of the ethnic background of women which can make some women worse off than others due to their cultural
In today’s society, the fact that a pay gap exists based on gender is no secret. Between television advertisements and movements for equal pay for equal work between men and women, one would imagine United States society to stand by the “all men created equal” clause, and pay employees based on their talent, qualifications, and contributions. A possibility as to why women are paid less than men for completing the same job could be due to social stigmas and stereotypes that have stemmed from the Holy Bible eventually leading to the government adapting these stereotypes into common societal norms whether it be intentional or not. While there are less submissive stigmas and stereotypes attached to women in today’s society compared to hundred of years ago, there are still more submissive gender roles associated with women today including in the work force. The expectation of research would be to discover the expected relationship between women and their employers and the adaption of the Holy Bible into a “secular” United States government. This will study the social relationships of equality between men and women and the adaptation of out-of-date and relevance to verse in the Holy Bible. This is a study of human social relationships in society with ties in the fields of economics and politics. This is about a social influence, not arguments for or against religion or government, but in promotion of a strong secular government.
I am a 10th, almost 11th, grader at the San Diego Jewish academy. For my final project in history class we were told to write a business letter regarding a topic that we find very problematic in our society. As a teenager who is going to get a job soon, I am especially aware of a major problem in our society, the wage gap between men and women.
Poverty is a considerable social problem; with a significant impact on those who suffer within. Growing up in poverty “reduces a child’s chance of growing up to be a healthy, well-adjusted, and contributing adult in our society” (Crosson-Tower, 2014, p. 59). Poverty is families having to struggle to afford necessities. Poverty does not know where your next meal is coming from or having to choose between paying rent and seeing a health care provider. The impact of poverty affects one’s ability through physical, social, emotional, and educational health. Even though individual overcome poverty it still extends across cultural, racial, ethnic, and geographical borders. Children represent the largest group of poverty in the United States. “Growing up in poverty places a child at a profound disadvantage and substantially lowers the chances that the child will mature into a well-adjusted, productive, and contributing
Children represent 25 percent of the population in the United States. 36 percent of those children are living in poverty (Chau, Tampiand and Wight, 2010). According to Moore and Redd, the percentage of children living in poverty here in the United States remained the lowest in the last 25 years. Despite that many of children one in six are still poor, the child poverty rate remands the same. Some of the trends that affect poverty in this country are: racial and ethnic disparities, family structure and social outcomes. Racial and ethnic disparities are factors that cause poverty. For example, some ethnic groups like Hispanic and black students do not have access to the same educational programs and infrastructure as the white students do. In addition, sometimes people within those groups are not eligible to qualify for social programs making them experience extreme poverty (Moore and Redd, 2002). Family structure is solidly related to whether or not children are poor. Statistics show that non-Hispanic children living with a single parent were nearly six times inclined to be poor as non-Hispanic white children living with both parents. This rate is not the same for black children. The poverty rate for black children living with a single mother was 47 percent. It is almost five times the rate of black children living with married parents. Hispanic children’s rate is 49 percent of children living in households headed by single mothers in comparison with 20 percent living with
Did you know that more than 45 million American children are currently living below the poverty line? Every day, children often wonder where their next meal will come from. There are many several why kids in the United States in are still suffering from below the poverty lines and how it affects them. Living in poverty can affect American children and adolescents emotionally, physically, mentally, and socially.
