“Pay gap discrimination against working Women and Men” “The day may be approaching when the whole world will recognize a woman as the equal of man.” This quote by the late Susan B Anthony speaks great volumes in regards to one of the raging issues of today. The question that has been lingering around is, have women reached that place of being equal to men? Unfortunately, the answer to the question is no. In the United States for example, the topic of women not being treated equally in terms of respect in high positioned jobs is a huge problem in today’s society. However, it is pushed under the rug. A reason why one can say this topic is not addressed is because Americans feel as though the fight for women’s freedom is one that has been dealt with already. Others also sometimes see it as redundant to hammer on gender equality. The idea that much of the sex composition in the work environment can influence the opposite sex gender is evident. A scientific study on demographic composition that was conducted concluded that sex composition played major roles in sex discrimination in the work environment. A couple ways that sex demographic in the work field has influenced work discrimination are the increase in the sense of threat and competition between the sexes, and the increase of work place abuse towards the minority sex. Today women all over the world are still fighting for the right to be treated as equal to men in various terms such as the equal respect and recognition,
Despite legislation for equal opportunities, sexism is still evident in the workplace. Women have made great advancements in the workforce and have become an integral part of the labor market. They have greater access to higher education and as a result, greater access to traditionally male dominated professions such as law. While statistics show that women are equal to men in terms of their numbers in the law profession, it is clear however, that they have not yet achieved equality in all other areas of their employment. Discrimination in the form of gender, sex and sexual harassment continues to be a problem in today’s society.
Today in society it can be agreed that women have indeed gained many rights that were not accessible to them 100 years before. Although, despite the mentality that men and women are treated equally there are still very many discrepancies between the treatment of genders. Many of which can be attributed to the expectations placed on the genders, gender roles between both genders, and women in the workplace. These issues have caused a great rift to form between the genders, a rift that has caused one gender to claim dominance over the other and this can develop a sense of inferiority by the submissive gender.
For every man there is a women out there that can do a man’s job. Marriage and family, economy, and the equity and discrimination. Throughout history there is a big gap even between men and women because we have never been as equal as we use to be. Women since the 1800s have been struggling with discrimination even after the signing of the equal act between men and women.
Gender discrimination has always been one of the most re-surfaced topics over decades when the big umbrella topic of Employment relations is brought up. For hundreds of years, women have taken one of the hardest challenges in life, to be recognised equally against men. For centuries, women were not given the same rights as men, nor were
There is no denying if there is a gender pay gap in America, the real question is why are women still getting paid less than men? Traditionally, women simply can not work as many hours as men due to their first job, being a mother. But is this the only reason women are not making the same income as a man with the same job position and education level? Many studies have been done to answer these questions and how women of all ages, races, and whether they have families or not are affected by this issue.
Inequality has been a dilemma for several years in countless different ways. A persistent problem with disproportion of income between women and men has been lingering within many companies in the United States. It has been said that women earn less money than men in the workplace for many different reasons. Some of these reasons are that women have not spent enough time in the office to be rewarded with raises and bonuses because they are busy with their home lives and taking care of their children, they, unlike men, have been taught to be timid and unaggressive which ultimately steers them away from requesting higher pay, or they do not meet the qualifications to receive promotions (Hymowitz, 2008). The gendered wage gap has been a controversial topic that's been around since women started working at jobs for money in the United States during the 1900’s era. With a steadily increasing amount of women working at jobs, came steadily strong opinions about women’s work rights. Women had been given a lesser wage compared to their male counterparts and it outraged women. However, as women were treated more and more equal, their wages were treated more equally as well. Then came a stand still in this improving equality for women in the 21st century, as it has been debated that women are now treated equally, compared to men. This standstill has caused even further debate ranging from several things with most focusing on
In the 21st Century the number of women enrolling in higher education institutions is surpassing the numbers of men enrolled. The graduation rates of women from high school and higher education are most often higher than for men. The number of women graduates from most professional occupations, including higher paying medicine, law and business, will exceed the number of men graduates in the near future. In numerous occupational areas with a majority of women graduates, salaries already surpass salaries in occupational areas with a majority of men graduates.
The gender wage inequality topic is one that has quietly laid in Americas closet of problems for decades. A female worker in Louisiana makes on average an alarming sixty-six cents compared to the dollar a man makes in twenty sixteen. When a father comes home after a forty-hour long work week making fifteen dollars an hour, he will open up a paycheck to six hundred dollars. When a mother comes home after working the same hours as the father, she will prepare dinner, change your diaper, lay you down to sleep. The only difference is her paycheck reads three hundred ninety-six dollars. It is only getting more challenging for females in today’s society as well. A defining term in the last two decades pertaining to gender wage gap inequality is the glass elevator effect. More men are choosing female dominated jobs such as nursing, teaching etc. While females slowly try to advance by increasing their salaries and rise up to higher paying and important positions, men seem to effortless glide their way to the top by an invisible escalator. This is called the glass elevator effect (Forbes). In America, this problem may go unnoticed, it is an issue dealing with cultural sexism. The broader impact of this is generations of women doing their best to advance in society but somehow constantly being beat. The specific claim of this topic is to bring justice and equality to women across in
The Article “Lily Ledbetter wasn’t lazy; she- and all women- just want equal pay” by Lanier Isom is about the gender wage gap. The gender wage gap is the difference between male and female earnings. Isom basically states in this article that the wage gap exists because of gender, however many experts state that the wage gap simple does exists do to a factor such as gender, but of multiple factors. These factors being that the statistics presented in favor of a Wage gap are incorrect and manipulated to seem correct. That the so called wage gap may be in fact do to the choice of job generally selected by women or, the failure to present evidence that completely contradicts the false statements made by the author.
In today’s society, the fact that a pay gap exists based on gender is no secret. Between television advertisements and movements for equal pay for equal work between men and women, one would imagine United States society to stand by the “all men created equal” clause, and pay employees based on their talent, qualifications, and contributions. A possibility as to why women are paid less than men for completing the same job could be due to social stigmas and stereotypes that have stemmed from the Holy Bible eventually leading to the government adapting these stereotypes into common societal norms whether it be intentional or not. While there are less submissive stigmas and stereotypes attached to women in today’s society compared to hundred of years ago, there are still more submissive gender roles associated with women today including in the work force. The expectation of research would be to discover the expected relationship between women and their employers and the adaption of the Holy Bible into a “secular” United States government. This will study the social relationships of equality between men and women and the adaptation of out-of-date and relevance to verse in the Holy Bible. This is a study of human social relationships in society with ties in the fields of economics and politics. This is about a social influence, not arguments for or against religion or government, but in promotion of a strong secular government.
Gender discrimination and wage gaps are highly debated topics in today's world. With such a progressive society and women increasing becoming a part of the work, there still stands a gap in the wages of men and women. For every dollar a man is paid a women is paid 80 cents for it. This is a 20 percent difference in the wages. It is obscure to think what causes such a difference, which is still not noticed by the federal agencies that work to eliminate discrimination. However, when a firm by firm analysis is conducted, the number is much smaller, 5 percent. So what could be the reasons that could a difference of 15 percent when comparing firm-level data and economy-wide data.
Women fought very hard for their rights in the workplace. Some of them, including Susan B Anthony, went above and beyond the norm. Yet, today our rights are still not the same as a man’s. At one point women weren’t allowed to work at all, and today they are allowed to have jobs while still being home makers. Although improvements have been made, there are still several dilemmas that need to be addressed. A women earns less than a man when doing the same work, and that is extremely unfair. Another issue in the workplace is that men underestimate women due to lack of strength and discrimination. There are also the issues of pregnancy and sexual
For my research question I will be asking: “How is America making progress on gender equity?” Fundamentally, I believe that women are still misrepresented, and are still facing many challenges in the workplace, especially in the business world. The gender stereotypes play a considerable role in the way the society sees women as leaders. However, it will be judicious to consider the small but noticeable changes that have been made over the past years concerning gender equality in the American workplace.
In today’s society, the working industry and employers have made substantial progress towards gender equality pay in the workforce. However, gender pay gap still raises an ethical concern that exists between women and men as well as discrimination for the same type of job function. Since the mid-1900’s, women have struggled to gain the respect of the working class industry. Women in the workforce wanted to be treated justly and receive the same equal employment opportunities as men. In some cases, researchers state that women in the workforce will not get paid equally for the same job function because of discrimination of gender gap. According to one research study, “there is still a gender pay gap. Women continue to earn considerably less than men on average” (Blau & Kahn, 2007, p. 8). Although there is a significant increase in employment choices for women, how much women can earn continue to raise major concerns. In this essay, I will focus on how a utilitarian would consider how women should be paid fairly and treated with the same level of respect as men, with minimal or no gap in pay especially if they have similar qualifications for the job function. I will also point out the objection that utilitarian reasoning may not adequately apply since men have the higher ground because of education, workforce and tenure way before women started working.
