How the Gender Pay Gap is Affecting American There is no denying if there is a gender pay gap in America, the real question is why are women still getting paid less than men? Traditionally, women simply can not work as many hours as men due to their first job, being a mother. But is this the only reason women are not making the same income as a man with the same job position and education level? Many studies have been done to answer these questions and how women of all ages, races, and whether they have families or not are affected by this issue. The gender pay gap is the difference in pay earned by men and the pay earned by women.( Pay Equity Commission, 2012). There are various ways in measuring the pay gap between genders, such as full- time or full- year wage. Statistics Canada data ( 2012) displayed that the gender pay gap in Ontario was 26% for full- time and full- year employments, which means for every C$1 earned by a man, a woman earned 74 cents( Pay Equity Commission,2012).The pay gap has been narrowing slowly over time compared to the how it was in 1987, which was 36%. However the gender wage gap is still a problem that exists in the society. I will discuss about the feminist theory and how it can be interpreted in the gender pay gap of our society, especially in regards to celebrities.
The average woman in the United States makes approximately $82.90 for every dollar their male counterparts make. (Elsesser). While those 20 cents may seem inconsequential to you, they add up. Losing that much money all year can be the difference between someone living in poverty, and someone living a nice life. The gender pay gap is the cause of this problem. Around the world, women are losing money just because of what gender they are. The gender wage gap is a huge problem, that can only be solved by going to extreme measures, such as requiring people to release their employees wage gap and passing new laws.
With all the information available about pay on websites you would think there would be more progress but as of 2013 full time working women have earned only 78% of what men make. There are differences between states in the size of the pay gap but there is a difference no matter where women choose to work and live. The best state to live in wasn’t a state and is actually Washington D.C. where women earned 91% of what male counterparts were paid. The worst area to work would be Louisiana as women only bring in 66% of what men earn. The pay gap is evident in almost all occupations whether they were traditionally positions favoring women or not. Age plays a factor into the pay gap as well with women keeping a closer pace with men, at nearly 90% of the pay, up until they turn 35, and then dropping to between 75% and 80%. Women of color have a larger pay gap than their white counterparts with various differences and Hispanic women at the lowest end only bringing in 54% of a white man’s pay. Even education does not improve the pay gap as at all levels of education it still exists and is worse for women of color. This is an issue that needs to be addressed nationally and by the businesses themselves to make the playing field
Inequality has been a dilemma for several years in countless different ways. A persistent problem with disproportion of income between women and men has been lingering within many companies in the United States. It has been said that women earn less money than men in the workplace for many different reasons. Some of these reasons are that women have not spent enough time in the office to be rewarded with raises and bonuses because they are busy with their home lives and taking care of their children, they, unlike men, have been taught to be timid and unaggressive which ultimately steers them away from requesting higher pay, or they do not meet the qualifications to receive promotions (Hymowitz, 2008). The gender pay gap is a deabatable issue. Some people might say that there is no pay gap while others insist that there is an injustice happening. I am here to say that there is no gender pay gap. The reason why a woman would earn $0.77 to a mans dollar is due to many factors. Some of thes factors include profession, experience, and willingness to work longer hours. A survey was conducted by Georgetown University and they found that the top five well paying professions were all dominated by males except for one. This shows that the reason why a man earns more than a woman is because men choose to work in higher paying careers. Another study demonstrated that male workers were more willing to work more hours and do laborious work than women.
Hospitals are among the worst offenders when it comes to pay inequality. Female doctors, on average, are paid significantly less than their male counterparts. Gender pay gap is defined as the average difference between men and women’s aggregate hourly earnings. In today’s United States hospitals women physicians average only around seventy-nine percent of what the average male doctor with an equal level of education makes. This topic is not a new discussion. This act of discrimination has been affecting women for many years; however, this topic was not studied until the 1950’s. Hospitals need to find common ground when it comes to the gender pay gap in order to resolve this long standing issue.

The economic issue with the gender pay gap has been a concern for quite some time. Many people say that men are paid more money, or have higher salaries than women; however, there are also people who believe otherwise. Some argue that maternity leave or education level is a reason why women seem to be paid less than men, and others argue that there is a bigger issue such as race and age. The following information will address both viewpoints on the gender pay gap and its issues within the economy, as well as history of women in the workforce.
Hello Kami, I enjoyed reading your analysis of the questions that were purposed to us. My current events article was similar to yours in that it talked about how there is a gender pay gap and how women are getting paid less than men for doing the same amount and type of work and how men get promoted more than women. I also like this quote from the text you used, “All women in the world work. They are farmers, craft workers, nurses, therapists, dishwashers, dancers, cashiers, airline pilots, mail carriers, mothers, and wives” (Kirk&Okazawa-Rey, 2013, pg.310-311). In my analysis, I talked about how being a mother plays an even bigger role in being oppressed in the workplace and I like how that quote says being a mother and a wife can be a job
Work Hard: Woman in the workplace still earn only 75 cents for every $1 a man earns. Explain just or unjust. The theme of this topic is dealing with individuals and groups. The subthemes would be it deals with people. Do you think women or men make the most money? Or do you agree or disagree to the choice of a gender gap pay? Does this affect my generation? How? Why? Women still earn significantly les then men, despite working longer hours when paid and unpaid work are taken into consideration. On average women around he world earn 24% less then men, and earn half the total income that men do during their lifetime. Women work 1.5 times harder, doing more unpaid and domestic work compared to men, plus they are less likely to receive a pension.
Poverty and ill-health are intertwined (Wagstaff, 2002). Poor countries, and poorer people within countries, tend to have worse health outcomes than better-off countries and people (Wagstaff, 2002). The poor tend to die earlier, have higher levels of morbidity, malnutrition, and mortality (Wagstaff, 2002). Poor women are not only challenged by the economic factor of the gender pay gap facing the same health problems of all those in poverty, but are further disadvantaged by being a woman.
If men are being paid even a penny more than women for the same work, then that suggests an attitude of disrespect for women. For years the average women income was solely passed on how much her male partner made; allowing her to be the stay at home parent. Women a far more likely now a days likely to deal with the dual demands of household work and job work. Of course there are great examples of women who have successfully carried out both, however, statistics show that women make about 80-82 to the dollars compared to men. Many of these jobs are set at this pay because the greatest number of women in the work force have white-collared jobs- clerical, sales, professional, technical, and managerial. Ironically, teachers and parents have always told children you can achieve your goal if you put the effort in. Well in today's day and age your gender can be the biggest impact on the job you get or career choice you chose. Jobs affected by this can be even a minimum wage pay job like preparing food or serving food, to the military and being a Doctor. Discrimination can affect our everyday lives.
Barbara Mikulski, a U.S senator since 1987, said, “We, the women of the Senate, with President Obama by our side, will keep fighting – our shoulders square, our lipstick on – because you deserve equal pay for your hard work.” The wage gap is defined as the difference between equal pay of the genders. Women not receiving equal pay for the same amount of experience and work, is a real problem in today’s society, not a myth as some would say.
