An 8-year-old boy walked through the streets and constantly saw stabbings and muggings in the crime-ridden streets of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Born to a poor family and surrounded by crime daily. Facing the challenges of living in poverty and being born in a place where most people are statistics. Though his childhood was an insurmountable struggle, he was able to overcome it and become one of the greatest baseball players ever. Played 20 seasons in professional baseball with the Minnesota Twins and Boston Red Sox. Winning a World Series MVP and three World Series with the Red Sox. David Ortiz is an inspiration to many due to his challenging upbringing, giving back to the community, and his success in the MLB. All the struggles and …show more content…
To this day, I’m a ghetto boy who made it out, but where I came from is still in me” (Ortiz 3). This is an example of a pathos used by the author. To explain, this quote helps the reader understand the idea that even through the most difficult and draining times, they can still get through it and become successful. Allowing the author to get the message across that people who seem to have accomplished the impossible were at one point in the same position as the reader, or in even worse positions. As well as, pulling at the heartstrings of the reader to get across the idea that a little kid can be encircled by such terrible things, but yet pull through and not become what he grew up around. These years of struggle would eventually allow David to become a 3x World Series Champion and the 2013 WS MVP. Throughout his years in the MLB, he found widespread success in the sport as a player. Though it wasn’t always that way when he was “embarrassed” by my Twins release. But times like these, collecting a necklace full of championship rings, made me grateful for everything that had happened to me” (Ortiz …show more content…
The idea he was trying to display in this story wasn’t just done on the field, but also through charity work. David not only made a large impact on the field, but also helped to create a charity. When it comes to making an impact off the field, he “has raised over $2 million to help out the kids in need and plans on raising more money and saving more lives” (Ortiz 107). This shows logos because it uses logic and reasoning to show he is a trustworthy source readers can listen to. His foundation helps kids in the Dominican Republic and New England areas with critical cardiac services they cannot afford. Further showing that David doesn’t just care about himself but understands what it means to give back. Showing that even though he grew up with almost nothing, he was able to overcome those obstacles and make a positive impact on people’s lives. To illustrate to the reader that David has been through a lot but still has a positive impact on the community, solidifying that he knows what he is talking about and is passing along a good
This has led to David doing very little for himself as he knows it will be done for him. “Interpretive theories argue that the most important influence on individuals’ behaviour is the behaviour of others towards them” Marsh et al (2009) P.72. By being in an environment where David isn’t required to do anything he has learned not to bother and everything will still be done for him.
The most recent edition to the Brooklyn Dodgers, a young farm boy from Connecticut named Roy Tucker (The Kid), becomes a phenom in the League with his brilliant pitching. But a freak accident ends his pitching career, forcing Tucker to find a new place on the team. John Tunis’s work resembles the story of current Major League outfielder Rick Ankiel. Ankiel is a star pitcher-turned outfielder, same as The Kid was. Although Ankiel’s heart-warming comeback story took many years longer, the similarities are still there. Both had to face the hard fact that they just were not going to pitch in the Majors ever again. Ankiel and Roy Tucker also had to have incredible perseverance and self-confidence to reach the Majors again, as outfielders. Tunis
The man, the myth, the legend… Mariano Rivera, the best closing pitcher who ever played the game of baseball. Most of you might recognize him by his many nicknames given to him due to his dominant performance throughout his career. He was referred to as “The Great One, The Sandman, The Hammer of God, and Mo.” (Bleacher Report) Clearly, he was thought very highly of in the game of baseball. Coming from nothing, Mariano has really made a name for himself here in the states. He was once a struggling boy, who became a thriving athlete and a man. It was in his heart to fight for what he desired, and not to stop until he got it. However, contrary to what you may be thinking, Rivera was not only a man who dedicated his life to baseball, but he also dedicated his life to being a
A warrior. The man is good at every little thing he does.” This quote from Mike Easler delineates Albert Pujols’ devotion to the game of baseball. Albert Pujols has contributed a great deal to the game of baseball and I believe his personality helps with that each and every day. Albert’s generosity, leadership, and passion for baseball helped shape his personality into the person he is.
Each time he would do a homerun he would point his fingers to the sky to dedicate it to his mother that passed away in a car crash in 2002. This act showed that he had a heart and felt the pain of losing a loved one. He also founded the David Ortiz children’s fund in 2007. He helped those that were in need but somehow people still looked him down. Then slowly and slowly his performance was becoming horrible.
David Ortiz David Ortiz is not only considered one of the best hispanic baseball players of all time, but is also considered to be one of the best baseball players in Major League Baseball History. For many he is considered to be the best Boston Red-Sox player ever. David Ortiz has had a longer career than most players, playing a total of twenty Major League Baseball seasons. Ortiz finished his career with 541 home runs, which ranks 17th on the MLB all-time home run list, 1,768 RBIs which is 22nd all time, and a .286 batting average. Among the primary position that he played, designated hitter, he is the all-time leader in MLB history for home runs, runs batted in, and hits (MLB, 2018).
Jackie not only became famous in Brooklyn New York but all around the world to, and he changed the history of baseball of long ago to today’s baseball history along with these other baseball stars who did too. Babe Ruth, Roberto Clemente, Ken Griffey junior, Cal Ripken junior, Joe DiMaggio and himself Jackie Robinson. Jackie is a really good example of a good person and
There was a kid named Babe Ruth. He was from a very poor family. He had to steal apples for food. He also loved playing baseball with his friends.
Growing up poor in the Dominican Republic, struggling through the minor leagues in an unfamiliar country, and ultimately finding success as a late-inning hero for the Boston Red Sox . And helping his team make the greatest comeback in sports history by winning the 2004 World Series. In 2006 he broke the team record with 54 home runs and started the All-Star game for the third straight year in 2007. Along the way he shares his hard-won wisdom, sidesplitting laughs from the clubhouse, thoughts about his famous teammates and opponents, and some remarkably candid opinions.Big Papi is an unforgettable story about a sports hero that will have readers cheering with every page. David Ortiz has averaged more than 43 home runs and 131 RBIs as a member of the
Jackie Robinson was great baseball player and athlete which really helped him in his push for equality. Even though some of the pitchers would try to hit Jackie with the ball to injure him , he thrived through this rough time and hit tons of home runs. People might not think he is one of the best because he didn't hit the most homeruns, but he was at a big disadvantage being the FIRST black MLB player and he was still pretty darn good.
He grew up in a hard life, with a single mother and 4 brothers all living in poverty, trying to get by. But, despite facing many barriers of poverty, racial discrimination, and prejudice, he became one of the best players for the Brooklyn Dodgers, and broke the racial barriers in major league sports that had been upheld for over 50 years. By doing this, he opened doors for many who could not succeed before. Although he was not revered by all when he was alive, he became a civil rights figure and leader, and became a national hero to us all.
This is important to note because most of our nation believes it came from embarrassment- dodgeball for example. Another example of logos is when the author claims, “One-third of high school students are not adequately active and over 10% do not participate in any physical activity at all”(986). This reveals that some kids do not even participate in sports. This is crucial to note considering that dodgeball is not helping the fact that kids are not active enough. Evidently, you can see that the author uses logos to support their
Babe Ruth has created a legacy in sports and become a legend of baseball where he even has a museum dedicated to him. Babe Ruth created a legacy by being a great person on and off of the field. “The next day the Babe, armed with bat, glove and half a dozen signed baseballs, made one of his frequent pilgrimages to a hospital.”(Schumach). “I won't be happy until we have every boy in America between the ages of six and sixteen wearing a glove and swinging a bat.”(N.a.). This shows that Babe Ruth was a good guy and when he went to the hospital with the autographed baseballs, bats and other items he would give to kids in the hospital. One kid he gave items to became a famous story about how he “Aided the Small Boy”(Schumach). The boy that Babe Ruth
People wanted to be like him, hit long home runs, and call there shots. He also taught people not to do bad things. How did he do this? He said that when he made it big he still hadn’t made it because of all the debt he had to pay. So people took inspired to be like him as a baseball player and also learned how to be a better person.
Most people think of this particular athlete as someone who puts on a glove and throws the ball around for a living; just like everyone else in the game. Not to me. I think of him as a role model to many people life’s, such as mine. His name is Derek Jeter. Derek was the shortstop for the New York Yankees from the years 1995-2014.
