An 8-year-old boy walked through the streets and constantly saw stabbings and muggings in the crime-ridden streets of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Born to a poor family and surrounded by crime daily. Facing the challenges of living in poverty and being born in a place where most people are statistics. Though his childhood was an insurmountable struggle, he was able to overcome it and become one of the greatest baseball players ever. To this day, I’m a ghetto boy who made it out, but where I came from is still in me” (Ortiz 3). This is an example of a pathos used by the author. To explain, this quote helps the reader understand the idea that even through the most difficult and draining times, they can still get through it and become successful. Allowing the author to get the message across that people who seem to have accomplished the impossible were at one point in the same position as the reader, or in even worse positions. As well as, pulling at the heartstrings of the reader to get across the idea that a little kid can be encircled by such terrible things, but yet pull through and not become what he grew up around. These years of struggle would eventually allow David to become a 3x World Series Champion and the 2013 WS MVP. Throughout his years in the MLB, he found widespread success in the sport as a player. The idea he was trying to display in this story wasn’t just done on the field, but also through charity work. David not only made a large impact on the field, but also helped to create a charity. When it comes to making an impact off the field, he “has raised over $2 million to help out the kids in need and plans on raising more money and saving more lives” (Ortiz 107). This shows logos because it uses logic and reasoning to show he is a trustworthy source readers can listen to. His foundation helps kids in the Dominican Republic and New England areas with critical cardiac services they cannot afford. Further showing that David doesn’t just care about himself but understands what it means to give back. Showing that even though he grew up with almost nothing, he was able to overcome those obstacles and make a positive impact on people’s lives.
