Passion For Surfing Research Paper

Growing up in a family that Bethany was in surfing was built in her blood. Bethany has two brothers who push her, to be the best person she can be. Bethanys parents inspire her to be the best surfer she can be, because they were both amazing surfers according to Bethany. Bethany is in love with the sport of surfing, she says “once you do it, it becomes an addiction” (Hamilton 10). Growing up she was lucky to have so many family members older than her to look up to and be influenced by.

My dad found a surfing camp on the beach that was cheap so we decided to give it a try. We started the surfing lessons, which were very beneficial; once we got into the water I caught my very first wave and was ecstatic. Surfing was the best thing in the world it was so relaxing and you could get your mind off of things.

Imagine you are at the beach. You are laying down a towel and setting up an umbrella when something catches your eye. Out in the ocean you see a surfer catching some waves, and it looks so fun and exciting that you almost grab a board and join in. However you don’t know how to surf and would rather not embarrass yourself in front of all these beach goers. Surfing, however, isn’t complicated at all and can be accomplished in these simple steps.

This surf organization is made of ordinary people who are also surfers, the Surf Rider members are protect and preserve our ocean and beaches. They have local chapters and clubs throughout the USA and the groups focus on keeping the pollution out of our ocean waters and beaches so we can all enjoy the waters for decades to come. There are a number of difficulties which could face people who wants to try it, surfing is a difficult sport and you have to make an effort to achieve something. Also it is very geographically localized, and if you were lucky enough to be born in the middle of Russia, your chances to become good at surfing (or to even try it) are negligible. Surfers also differ from other athletes because surfing becomes more of a lifestyle than just a sport, and it can be described as a subculture.

Swimming has been a passion of mine since age four. The adrenaline and the screaming of the fans in a race made me love the sport even more. In the thirteen years that I have been swimming, I never gave up my passion or drive to swim. Even from the countless times I thought of quitting because it became too tough, I persevered and just kept on swimming. To me, swimming is not just an extracurricular activity or a sport, it is a way of life.

I am a water loving science geek teenager, who has dreamed of being a marine biologist since I was a child. My love of water started when I was four years old participating in my first swim lesson at my local YMCA, which I now work at as a lifeguard and swim instructor. My water passion has continued throughout my life advancing through swim lesson to club and high school swimming. One of my proudest moments was swimming with kids twice my age and keeping up the whole swim lesson, which for me was more of a practice. After that, swim lesson extremely tired, but could not wait to go back.

It was always a dream to play hockey in college and maybe someday professionally. Growing older, I kept having these reality checks that someday that might not happen and I had to have a backup plan. I worked hard and committed to playing hockey in college. But then, I asked myself what was next. Playing professionally was a dream, but I suddenly realized that the dream I had as a boy was far fetched. I brought my leadership and teamwork skills off of the ice to the classroom and ended up with a passion that I never knew would develop. My passion for accounting grew daily and I want to continue learning to build the fundamentals that will contribute to a successful career. This is why I want to advance my education at Northern Illinois University.

Admitting to ourselves that we’re bored can be pretty tough as adults. Being bored is something that kids complain about; as adults, we’ve been taught to think that being bored is bad. If you’re bored, you’re probably not being productive or “doing something” with your life.

Imagine yourself laying on your surfboard in the cool ocean water with the hot sun beating down on you. Surfing is a sport as old as time. Created in 1,000 A.D surfing caught on quick and never left. As surfing grew in popularity, more and more people began competing. By 1930 surfing competitions started but wasn’t popular until 1978 when the first place winner got a cash prize.

Surfing is an ancient art and was first known as "he'e nalu", which translates to wave-sliding. However, surfing wasn't simply a fun sport or a task that these ancient people completed. Instead, it was something that attached them to the sea and they used it to reflect their emotions.

I know people who are good at surfing, but that doesn't mean they are ready to face extreme surfing. Sometimes we think we are a lot better at something than we really are. In reality you're probably not ready for extreme surfing.

The actions of surfing are paddling, standing up, holding balance, and maneuvering the board along the wave. The first action, paddling, engages many muscles all along the back and into the arms. Paddling works your Latissimus Dorsi (found in your lower back), your Trapezius (found in the upper, back of your neck) and your deltoides (found in the shoulders) (Tessa Bolter, personal interview 1). According to Hypervibe.com; “Paddling out uses deltoides, biceps, and triceps, which is all upper body and found in the arms and shoulders” ( ). From my observations of surfers, paddling takes up the majority of the time on the water. Paddling out to the spot on the water you would like works all of these muscles for long periods of time. Likewise paddling away from the wave as fast as you can in order to catch and stand up on the wave is another chunk of a surfers time.
