I found that the participant observation method was the most helpful and easiest method to use. I was able to talk with the firemen about their experiences and see how they interacted. I also worked out with them and sat around talking with them. This method allowed me to get information about their interactions because I could easily observe them talking amongst themselves and to me. One of the downsides of this method was that I could not record information as I was observing. Writing down what they were saying and what was going on would seem rude and would be hard to do. I had to wait until leaving the firehouse before recording what happened. This led to more vague information because of forgetting things. The phenomenological method
In this paper, I discuss my experience with observing a group counseling session with the purpose of evaluating it in terms of how it is set up, how it is run, interventions used, culturally sensitivity, and the contribution toward my professional development as a social worker. The group setting plays a critical role in social work outside of the individual session and can be largely beneficial for clients in the forms of therapy, counseling, self-help, and support. By attempting to better understand group interventions, I will learn how to apply this strategy in aiding clients for whom this method is appropriate by increasing their social supports.
In the article, “Researching Dealers and Smugglers,” Patricia Adler discusses her and her husband’s experience using participant observation to collect data from drug dealers and the problems this qualitative method brought. A qualitative method focuses on collecting rich, non-statistical data. This method involves face-to-face interviews and actual participation with the group being researched. The Adlers use this method because it is almost impossible to gather accurate information on people who smuggle drugs. This is true because they are such private and deceitful people. The only way to get the real facts is if the smugglers trust the person. Unfortunately, participant observation brought problems such as the dealers and smugglers
Soldiers are trained to be altruist even when they don’t agree with it they are taught a sense of self service and duty and no matter how they feel about someone or what the person looks like they are going to help. Males and females soldiers the same.
The Advantages and Disadvantages of Participant Observation as a Research Method This essay will examine how participant observation is used as a research method. In the main body of this essay, this idea will be addressed by pointing out advantages and disadvantages of participant observation. I will give examples to support my argument.
I have been going back and forth for a while on the type of essay I would like to write. I wanted to interest readers, but also write about something that interests me. Lately, I have been having trouble with friendships, and I feel as though no one understands that. When I had a conversation with my mom she explained, that my sister was going through the same thing. That is when the idea hit me.
Interviewees included Morah’s mother and father who were the main sources of information. The location that the observation(s) took place at was 7026 Bathurst Street, Zareinu Educational Centre of Metropolitan Toronto.
Culture differs from one location to another because of the different population in those areas. A population is an entire group of individual persons, objects, or items from which the sample are being drawn. The cultures in neighborhoods are different because neighborhoods rise and fall, and this often brings about changes in the population. A method called participant observation can answer questions about the culture of the population being observed. Participant observation is a qualitative research method that aims to uncover the meanings people give to their own social actions by observing their behavior in practice. By hanging out in a community observing the population over a long period of time, participant observers are able to capture
Notwithstanding, there are challenges in autoethnographic study and these include: over reliance on personal writing style, lack of self-honesty, scholars’ failure to realise and link their personal experience to larger theoretical concepts; and researchers inability to defend against well-structured critiques whereas they still making claims to knowledge (Parks 1997). Also, Self-reflection serves as one of the major challenges in doing participant observation Duncan (2004). Autoethnographic investigation has not yet enjoyed the popularity, respect, and admiration of its ethnographic predecessors. With its use of self as a source of data, it has been criticized for being self-indulgent, introspective, and individualized (Holt 2003).
I went to a Starbucks store near DU twice to conduct the observations. First, I went there on March 26 and stayed there from 8:00am to 9:30am. Then I went there on the next day and stayed there from 10:00am to 11:00am. I mainly observed the physical layout of this store, the in-store environment, the price of the coffee, the reactions of the customers and the performance of the staff. As for the performance of the staff, I observed their genders, ages, facial expressions, job content and work efficiency and also counted the number of them.
This observational study focuses on how different scaffolding techniques affect the ability for children to complete a cognitive task. Specifically, this study observes if there is a correlation between the speed for children to complete a puzzle and the number of direct commands a teacher gives. A correlation would reveal if children learn and respond better to direct commands rather than other approaches such as by giving suggestions. The data in this study could also show if commands have a tendency to positively or negatively affect children’s overall abilities. The result of this study is not obvious because children can respond differently to commands, and commands can be given in different emotional tones.
Observational studies and randomized trials both try to gather information to evaluate the effectiveness of medicine. Observational studies attempt to evaluate the effects of medicine by studying large groups of people and tracking them over a certain period. Randomized trials learn about the effects by randomly assigning to receive either a drug that is being tested or a placebo. Both observational studies and randomized trials were used to study the effects of hormonal replacement therapy on women; however, they yielded very different results.
During this week, I can say there was no progress made compare to last week, which in my opinion make me sad. On one side, I can understand why I didn’t make any progress. During the beginning of the week I start the week in a good way. I start to eat healthy with no junk food and exercise. But later on, the week I didn’t do the best. I start to eat junk food like chips and ice cream. The worst part was that I didn’t exercise for four days straight, which is bad. On average one should exercise 60 minutes and at least five days (think that’s average). I could say that this is my worst week then it comes to exercising because I never been this much since exercising. For next week, my goal is to improve my exercising at least 5 days. Also, for
All studies possess case definitions and epidemiologists build on that to find information about populations with such cases. These cases are described and analysed accordingly. To identify the causes of the case, the epidemiologists compares the rate of the situations in an affected population to a deserving category of individuals (Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, 2012). Hence, my work will analyse your observational report and compare it to mine at some points.
The researchers used a qualitative study approach. This type of study is based on the descriptions, observations and supporting data. The main objective from this study is to observe the effectiveness from the three month experience of the kids on the move. Basically, the methods used to collect data were: First, the literacy test. This type of testing will be based on simple questions to identify healthy food items, also matching a healthy vegetable item with a healthy meal that is used for. Second, weight measurements. Researchers will take time to measure each one of the 20 participants waist before the kids on the move experience and document the findings. While other research members will utilize a camcorder to record observations. Third, 24 hour
Observational research empowers a scientist to consistently receive empirical information from observing people in their natural circumstances without intentionally influencing the behavior and environment of study. The study has several observational styles where the scientist is not involved, can be notably present, but not involved, or becomes a participant for a firsthand view of the experience among the people studied. This hands-off research style requires the scientist to have discernment to remain oblivious, account for instances when their presence can affect the behavior and, as other studies, discipline to remain strictly not bias.
