On May 19, 2017, police officer, Karl Fennimore sustained a torn ACL while playing in a City League basketball game. Officer Fennimore is a member of the Oxnard Police Department basketball team, which is comprised of other Oxnard Police Department employees. Officer Fennimore began working for the Oxnard Police Department in 2010, and became a member of the K-9 unit in January 2015. Officer Fennimore’s direct supervisor in the K-9 Unit is Dan Fiedler. Fielder was placed in charge of the department’s basketball team in 2005, after the department expressed that it wanted to participate in sporting events against other law enforcement agencies in the city and county. After learning that Officer Fennimore played competitive basketball for Ventura College, Fiedler, asked Officer Fennimore to join the department basketball team. Fiedler believed that the City League would be a good alternative to holding regular practice that the team greatly needed to improve its performance in the special games. The City League consists of other teams from within the community. Members of the City League teams are from local city agencies, small businesses, school employees, etc. The City League games are held twice a week, for seven-weeks in the fall, and seven-weeks in the spring. The costs for the City League are primarily paid for by the Oxnard Peace Officer Association (OPOA), which is the officer’s labor union. In addition to the OPOA contributions, the team seeks corporate sponsors. If there are any residual costs after OPOA and sponsors, the players will chip in. Occasionally, the Oxnard Police Department provides refreshments for players and spectators, especially during the playoffs. If the team makes the playoffs, Fielder is allowed to use the department email to notify people to attend the playoff
